Book Proliferation of weapons of mass destruction assessing the risks

Download or read book Proliferation of weapons of mass destruction assessing the risks written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the end of the Cold War, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction has become much more prominent in U.S. national security and foreign policy planning. Revelations about Iraqi, North Korean, South African, and Israeli nuclear weapon programs, the possibility of a nuclear arms race in South Asia, and the multidimensional conflicts in the Middle East all point to the immediacy of this problem. Adding a dangerous new twist is the dissolution of the Soviet Union, a superpower armed with nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons whose successor states are wracked by economic crises and political instability. At least three main factors underlie this renewed emphasis on proliferation. First, the reduced military threat from the former Soviet Union has increased the relative importance of lesser powers, especially if armed with weapons of mass destruction. Second, certain international political and technological trends are increasing the threat to international security from proliferation. Third, new opportunities are opening for enhancing the current international regimes designed to stem proliferation. Since at least as far back as the l96Os, when it sponsored the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the United States has recognized that proliferation is a global problem and combating it requires high levels of international cooperation. This country has also exerted unilateral influence, successfully in several cases, to discourage proliferation; it will no doubt continue to do so. Nevertheless, placing priority on nonproliferation will require the further development and enforcement of international norms and behavior supporting that objective. International conditions today offer significant opportunities for such cooperation.

Book Controlling Chemical and Biological Weapons Proliferation

Download or read book Controlling Chemical and Biological Weapons Proliferation written by Richard Latter and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of chemical weapons during the Iran-Iraq War heightened fears about the proliferation of such weapons and their use by Third World countries. In May 1991, President Bush formally forswore the use of chemical weapons by the United States, causing some observers to conclude that chemical weapons could no longer be considered a useful military option. However, this paper views this as a dangerous misconception: for Third World countries chemical and biological weapons remain potent systems. This paper discusses the problems that such weapons may pose in the future.

Book A History of Chemical and Biological Weapons

Download or read book A History of Chemical and Biological Weapons written by Edward M. Spiers and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2010-04-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the 9/11 attacks and the anthrax letters that appeared in their wake, the threat posed by the widespread accessibility of chemical and biological weapons has continually been used to stir public fear and opinion by politicians and the media alike. In Chemical and Biological Weapons, Edward M. Spiers cuts through the scare tactics and hype to provide a thorough and even-handed examination of the weapons themselves—the various types and effects—and their evolution from World War I to the present. Spiers describes the similarities and differences between the two types of weapons and how technological advancements have led to tactical innovations in their use over time. As well, he gives equal attention to the international response to the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons, analyzing global efforts aimed at restraining their use, such as deterrence and disarmament, and the effectiveness of these approaches in the twentieth century. Using Iraq as a case study, Spiers also investigates its deployment of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq War and the attempts by the international community to disarm Iraq through the United Nations Special Commission and the United States-led war in 2003. A timely and balanced historical survey, Chemical and Biological Weapons will be of interest to readers studying the proliferation and use of chemical and biological warfare and the reactions of the international community throughout the last several decades.

Book Chemical and Biological Warfare

Download or read book Chemical and Biological Warfare written by Eric Croddy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The armaments of chemical and biological warfare (CBW) are now widely held not just by nation-states, but by terrorist and criminal enterprises. The weapons themselves are relatively inexpensive and very easy to hide, allowing organizations of just a few dozen people to deploy potentially devastating attacks. While in the twentieth century most arms-control efforts focused, rightly, on nuclear arsenals, in the twenty-first century CBW will almost certainly require just as much attention. This book defines the basics of CBW for the concerned citizen, including non-alarmist scientific descriptions of the weapons and their antidotes, methods of deployment and defensive response, and the likelihood in the current global political climate of additional proliferation.

Book excerpt: The 1991 Gulf war has highlighted the dangers of non-conventional weapons and ballistic missile proliferation in the Third World in general and in the Middle East in particular. But the dangers of non-conventional weapons proliferation are not confined to Iraq: both ballistic missiles and chemical weapons are widespread and a number of countries continue with biological weapons research. This book contains papers by leading world experts on all aspects of non-conventional weapons proliferation in the post-Gulf War period.
