Book Chemical Analysis of Diesel Particulate Matter and an Evaluation of Artifact Formation

Download or read book Chemical Analysis of Diesel Particulate Matter and an Evaluation of Artifact Formation written by FS-C Lee and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods for the sampling and analysis of diesel particulates have been evaluated. A number of different solvents were utilized for the extraction of diesel particulates. Benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) standards spiked on glass-fiber or quartz-fiber filters were found to be oxidized during the sampling of ambient air or exhaust gases. Such degradation was largely reduced by using filters with more inert surfaces, such as Teflon membranes. The results suggest that sample degradation due to gas-BaP reactions requires the presence of a reactive or catalytic medium, such as the glass-fiber filter surface. Such reactions can be minimized with the proper choice of a more inert filter surface such as Teflon. Oxidation of BaP was also observed in diesel extracts during analytical procedures or prolonged storage for several weeks in the dark. The implication of the sampling and analytical artifact problem is a question not only of analytical recovery but also of whether significant biologically active conversion products are produced. Analytical methods to study the extraction efficiency for BaP from diesel particulates are presented. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are being investigated for the identification and analysis of these species and preliminary results indicate the presence of a number of oxygenated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds, which potentially could be produced by oxidation during sampling and analysis.

Book Analytical Techniques in Environmental Chemistry 2

Download or read book Analytical Techniques in Environmental Chemistry 2 written by J. Albaiges and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analytical Techniques in Environmental Chemistry 2 focuses on the establishment of analytical techniques in the management of compounds relative to their effects on health and nature. The book stresses that these analytical techniques are essential in order to cope with the problems arising from the utilization of these compounds. The selection contains the contributions of authors who have continuously performed studies on the analysis of organic and inorganic pollutants and monitoring strategies or case histories of compounds. These pieces focus on the role of analytical chemistry in the control of compounds, particularly if the compounds are seen to pose threat to health and the environment. The text presents studies on the determination of how these compounds can become pollutants, which are emphasized by the experiments and laboratory procedures mentioned in the book. Through research on hazardous compounds in different areas, the book manages to point out the differences of how these compounds can affect the environment and health. The text then proceeds by presenting various analytical techniques that could be employed to mitigate the hazardous nature of these compounds. The book is a reliable source of information for scholars and readers who are interested in studying how to control the hazardous effects of compounds both on health and the environment.

Book Mass Spectrometry in Environmental Sciences

Download or read book Mass Spectrometry in Environmental Sciences written by O. Hutzinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past ten years a variety of methods involving mass spectrom etry have been developed for the analysis of environmentally important compounds. Much has been accomplished in that period to solve some of the important problems in the field. Growth of this methodology and its accomplishments has reached the point where an individual scientist can no longer have an in-depth knowledge of all the areas involved. We have attempted to provide this in-depth picture to those scientists con cerned by having the important topics treated by experts in the subject matter. In order to provide all the relevant material in one volume we begin with the general topics which provide the basic background material necessary to understand the techniques discussed in the in-depth topics. These general chapters are kept brief, containing only the essentials needed by the working scientist to deal with the practical applications. References in these chapters are chosen to permit a more complete study of each chapter. The concept for this book was developed during the activities of two of the editors under a NATO travel grant. These editors gratefully acknowledge this support which made the initial planning of this book possible. The editors would like to thank the individual authors of each chap ter for their cooperation and generously giving of their time for this project.
