Download or read book Chekhov for the 21st Century written by Carol Apollonio Flath and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred fifty years after his birth, Anton Chekhov remains the most beloved Russian playwright in his own country, and in the English-speaking world he is second only to Shakespeare. His stories, deceptively simple, continue to serve as models for writers in many languages. In this volume, Carol Apollonio and Angela Brintlinger have brought together leading scholars from Russia and the West for a wide-ranging conversation about Chekhov's work and legacy. Considering issues as broad as space and time and as tightly focused as the word, these are twenty-one exciting new essays for the twenty-first century.

Book The Rhythm of Space and the Sound of Time

Download or read book The Rhythm of Space and the Sound of Time written by Cynthia Ashperger and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2008 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rhythm of Space and the Sound of Time examines the place of Chekhov's Technique in contemporary acting pedagogy and practice. Cynthia Ashperger answers the questions: What are the reasons behind the technique's current resurgence? How has this cohesive and holistic training been brought into today's mainstream acting training? What separates this technique from the other currently popular methods? Ashperger offers an analysis of the complex philosophical influences that shaped Chekhov's ideas about this psycho-physical approach to acting. Chekhov's five guiding principles are introduced to demonstrate how eastern ideas and practices have been integrated into this western technique and how they have continued to develop on both theoretical and practical levels in contemporary pedagogy, thereby rendering it intercultural. The volume also focuses on the work of several contemporary teachers of the technique associated with Michael Chekhov International Association (MICHA). Current teacher training is described as well as the different modes of hybridization of Chekhov's technique with other current methods. Contemporary practical experiments and some fifty exercises at both beginner and intermediate/advanced levels are presented through analysis, examples, student journals and case studies, delineating the sequences in which units are taught and specifying the exercises that differ from those in Chekhov's original writing. This book is for practitioners as well as students of the theatre.

Book Freedom from Violence and Lies

Download or read book Freedom from Violence and Lies written by Michael C. Finke and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An enlightening, nuanced, and accessible introduction to the life and work of one of the greatest writers of short fiction in history. Anton Chekhov’s stories and plays endure, far beyond the Russian context, as outstanding modern literary models. In a brief, remarkable life, Chekhov rose from lower-class, provincial roots to become a physician, leading writer, and philanthropist, all in the face of a progressive fatal disease. In this new biography, Michael C. Finke analyzes Chekhov’s major stories, plays, and nonfiction in the context of his life, both fleshing out the key features of Chekhov’s poetics of prose and drama and revealing key continuities across genres, as well as between his lesser-studied early writings and the later works. An excellent resource for readers new to Chekhov, this book also presents much original scholarship and is an accessible, comprehensive overview of one of the greatest modern dramatists and writers of short fiction in history.

Book Anton Chekhov s Texts on the Twenty first Century Russian Stage

Download or read book Anton Chekhov s Texts on the Twenty first Century Russian Stage written by Greer Gerni and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Anton Chekhov's Texts on the Twenty-First Century Russian Stage" examines the diverse presentations of Anton Chekhov's work in Moscow during the first two decades of the twenty-first century. It is an ethnographic and archival study addressing the question: In what ways do twenty-first century stagings of Anton Chekhov's texts contribute to the development of progressive theatrical forms and presentation of forward-thinking questions and themes while upholding traditional associations with Chekhov and the role of theatre in Russian culture? This study provides a snapshot of trends in producing Chekhov plays in the early twenty-first century by examining contemporary theatre productions of Anton Chekhov's texts, Russian theatre training techniques, and interviews with Russian theatre artists. My research focuses on the history of Chekhov's plays at the Moscow Art Theatre in conversation with the most prominent Russian productions of his work over the last decade and provides some clarity on the complexities of the relationship between the text and the stage. This project addresses the need for scholarship on twenty-first-century Russian theatre and offers an introduction to prominent directors and identifies current trends. Chapter 1, "Chekhov in Cultural Memory", positions Anton Chekhov within the context of Russian culture by identifying the assumed knowledge of Chekhov of the Russian theatre audience including standardized Russian curriculum in school, house museums, media coverage, and more. Chapter 2, "Chekhov at the Moscow Art Theatre", serves as a partial history of Chekhov's texts on the Moscow Art Theatre stage covering productions from Stanislavsky's original stagings through new twenty-first century stagings with special focus on case studies of the theatre's twenty-first century productions of Chekhov's texts. Chapter 3, "Chekhov's Plays in Twenty-First-Century Performance" zooms out from the Moscow Art Theatre to examine productions throughout Moscow in several case studies in the techniques of contemporary Russian directors who use Chekhov's texts as a vehicle for creating new forms of theatre that present contemporary and sometimes subversive themes.

Book The Essential Tales of Chekhov

Download or read book The Essential Tales of Chekhov written by Anton Chekhov and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2000-06-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the two hundred stories that Anton Chekhov wrote, the twenty stories that appear in this extraordinary collection were personally chosen by Richard Ford--an accomplished storyteller in his own right. Included are the familiar masterpieces--"The Kiss," "The Darling," and "The Lady with the Dog"--as well as several brilliant lesser-known tales such as "A Blunder," "Hush!," and "Champagne." These stories, ordered from 1886 to 1899, are drawn from Chekhov's most fruitful years as a short-story writer. A truly balanced selection, they exhibit the qualities that make Chekhov one of the greatest fiction writers of all time: his gift for detail, dialogue, and humor; his emotional perception and compassion; and his understanding that life's most important moments are often the most overlooked. "The reason we like Chekhov so much, now at our century's end," writes Ford in his perceptive introduction, "is because his stories from the last century's end feel so modern to us, are so much of our own time and mind." Exquisitely translated by the renowned Constance Garnett, these stories present a wonderful opportunity to introduce yourself--or become reaquainted with--an artist whose genius and influence only increase with every passing generation.

Book excerpt: 'The Murder' is a short story written by Anton Chekhov. It begins at the evening service celebrated at Progonnaya Station. Before the great ikon, painted in glaring colors on a background of gold, stood the crowd of railway servants with their wives and children, and also of the timbermen and sawyers who worked close to the railway line. All stood in silence, fascinated by the glare of the lights and the howling of the snow-storm which was aimlessly disporting itself outside, regardless of the fact that it was the Eve of the Annunciation. The old priest from Vedenyapino conducted the service; the sacristan and Matvey Terehov were singing.

Book Chekhov

Download or read book Chekhov written by V.S. Pritchett and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: V.S. Pritchett explores the connections between Chekhov's life and art, showing how Chekhov often based his fiction on experiences of his difficult early years where he was responsible for his impoverished family, and as a young doctor, reported on the conditions of the Russian penal colony at Sakhalin. Later he continued his medical career, even when he became a well-known writer and playwright. This book focuses on the short stories of Chekhov often neglected in favor of his plays and discusses why Chekhov was a success in both mediums. Pritchett, himself a master of the short story, is a uniquely qualified to write this superb biography. "Pritchett...presents a unique critical perspective as a short story master whose work spans this century, interpreting an illustrious predecessor through their shared art." -Boston Globe

Book The Complete Short Novels

Download or read book The Complete Short Novels written by Anton Chekhov and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Book Jacket Status: Jacketed) Aanton Chekhov, widely hailed as the supreme master of the short story, also wrote five works long enough to be called short novels–here brought together in one volume for the first time, in a masterly new translation by the award-winning translators Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. The Steppe–the most lyrical of the five–is an account of a nine-year-old boy’s frightening journey by wagon train across the steppe of southern Russia. The Duel sets two decadent figures–a fanatical rationalist and a man of literary sensibility–on a collision course that ends in a series of surprising reversals. In The Story of an Unknown Man, a political radical spying on an important official by serving as valet to his son gradually discovers that his own terminal illness has changed his long-held priorities in startling ways. Three Years recounts a complex series of ironies in the personal life of a rich but passive Moscow merchant. In My Life, a man renounces wealth and social position for a life of manual labor. The resulting conflict between the moral simplicity of his ideals and the complex realities of human nature culminates in a brief apocalyptic vision that is unique in Chekhov’s work.

Book Michael Chekhov Technique in the Twenty first Century

Download or read book Michael Chekhov Technique in the Twenty first Century written by Cass Fleming and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of an innovative practice-based research project, Michael Chekhov Technique in the Twenty-First Century: New Pathways draws on clusters of historical writings and archive materials to investigate how Chekhov's technique can be used for other areas of theatre-making practice. In contrast to the narrow, actor training-only analysis that characterized 20th-century explorations of the technique, authors Cass Fleming and Tom Cornford, along with contributions from Roanna Mitchell, Daron Oram, Caoimhe McAvinchey and Sinead Rushe, focus on a variety of disciplines. The central areas explored are: devising and catalyst direction; collaborating with playwrights; and scenographic practice, all of which are now at the forefront of international theatre practice. The book also addresses the potential use of the technique in relation to other areas of performer-training, as well as looking beyond the theatre to applied performance and therapeutic contexts. In addition to this practical analysis the authors consider the critical and theoretical issues that are raised by this practice. Chekhov's metaphors and use of language are interrogated and developed in a way that stays true to his principles and methods, but simultaneously engages with contemporary perspectives and critical frames. Michael Chekhov Technique in the Twenty-First Century: New Pathways is a thorough and fascinating investigation into new uses of the Michael Chekhov technique, providing practical strategies, principles, and techniques alongside theoretical discussion.
