Book The European Families of the Diptera

Download or read book The European Families of the Diptera written by Pjotr Oosterbroek and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European families of the Diptera presents an identification key and family descriptions of all 132 families of Diptera (midges, mosquitoes, gnats, true flies) occurring in Europe. It is written by a well-known Dutch specialist, in collaboration with over 30 European dipterists. For the extensive identification key a new combination of important characters is employed, enabling relatively easy identification of families which are aberrant or traditionally considered difficult to identify. Over 600 line drawings are included to illustrate characters and families. Apart from the key, the book includes an extensive chapter on terminology. Information on systematics and the number of genera and species in Europe, a survey of the main characters, a summary of the biology and of the pertaining identification literature is included for all families. Due to its design and content, the book will be of interest to the lay public and the serious amateur alike.

Book The Frit Flies Chloropidae Diptera of Fennoscandia and Denmark

Download or read book The Frit Flies Chloropidae Diptera of Fennoscandia and Denmark written by Emilia Nartshuk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Frit Flies (Chloropidae, Diptera) of Fennoscandia and Denmark is written by two leading experts on this large and difficult group of small to minute flies, Dr Emilia P. Nartshuk, Zoological Institute Academy of Sciences, St Petersburg, Russia, & Dr Hugo Andersson (deceased in 2008), Zoological Institute, Lund University, Sweden. The book covers the North European fauna of frit flies that totals 209 species in 48 genera including 11 species and 1 genus described as new to science. Several species are economically important as notorial pests of cereals and fodder grasses. This is the first comprehensive treatment ever of the entire North European fauna of frit flies. It primarily facilitates species identification, but further summarizes existing knowledge about nomenclature, biology, faunistics and literature. Keys are given to subfamilies, genera and species for the adults and for the known larvae to genus or even species level. The text is supplemented with numerous illustrations of characters of diagnostic importance. Species distributions in the Nordic countries are detailed in a catalogue.

It identifies the hoverflies of Northwest Europe and incorporates the knowledge that has been published in many articles over the past decades. The book covers 500 species - nearly two thirds of the known European syrphid fauna. The main body of the book consists of dichotomous keys to all the hoverfly species found in the region, richly illustrated with drawings that show details as well as whole flies. • What are hoverflies and how are they to distinguish from bees, wasps and other bees • Where are they found? (forests, woodlands, marshes, peatlands and bogs, meadows, grasslands, gardens • When is the best time to find and see hoverflies? • Collecting and preservering specimens • Early stages (eggs and larvae) • How to use this book? • The hoverfly body • Identification keys to the genera and 500 species of Northwest Europe • richly illustrated with drawings that show details as well as whole flies

Book Chironomidae Larvae Vol 1 Tanypodinae

Download or read book Chironomidae Larvae Vol 1 Tanypodinae written by Henk J. Vallenduuk and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General ecology of the Chironomids and identification key to the Tanypodinae To most people midges are a nuisance—annoying creatures that can spoil a quiet evening. However, there are those who study these tiny insects with great passion, including the two authors of this book. Because the European Water Framework Directive requires the authorities to ascertain the presence status of macro-invertebrates in surface waters, their work gained more attention. Chironomids are a group of non-biting midges, the larvae of which are important in aquatic ecosystems. A major subfamily of this group are the Tanypodinae. The larvae of most of the species are free-swimming or crawling predators while those of other species burrow in the mud on the bottom. Since they inhabit a variety of habitats they can be found in almost all surface waters in the Netherlands. The authors revised existing identification keys and collected additional information on the biology and ecology of the larvae. Where possible, the identification keys use anatomical characters that are easily observed. The clear descriptions of the development stages, sampling methods and abiotic environmental factors help make this book useful for all students of chironomid larvae, professional or otherwise. This book is especially important for its potential use in water quality management. Volume 1: Chironomidae Larvae - General ecology and Tanypodinae Volume 2: Chironomidae Larvae - Biology and ecology of the Chironomini Volume 3: Chironomidae Larvae - Biology and Ecology of the Aquatic Orthocladiinae

Book Economy and Ecology of Heathlands

Download or read book Economy and Ecology of Heathlands written by W. Herbert Diemont and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heathlands in Europe reflect a long history of human activity and use. Through the ages heathlands have been of importance as (semi)agricultural areas, hunting territories and various other uses of mankind. This diversity of use has created a cultural diversity over the whole Atlantic area of Europe, from Portugal and Spain in the south to Norway in the north and from Germany in the east to Ireland in the west. Economy and Ecology of Heathlands shows us both the diversity in use all over Europe and combines this information with the newest insights in ecology and the Natura 2000 status most of these heathlands have got nowadays. Central theme is how to cover the costs of maintenance of these heathlands. Is their future in new types of commons, or do other types of land ownership, using the revenues of heathland ecosystem services, give better opportunities? The editors combine a broad variance in knowledge of heathlands varying from all aspects of ecology, land use, as well as economy.

Book excerpt: Chironomidae Larvae of the Netherlands and Adjacent Lowlands Chironomids are a group of non-biting midges, the larvae of which are important in aquatic ecosystems. The subfamily Orthocladiinae is well represented in flowing water. This books contains information about their life cycle, feeding behaviour and their response to environmental factors. Chironomidae Larvae, Vol. 3: Orthocladiinae presents a wealth of information for scientific and practical purpose. The subfamily Orthocladiinae is especially well represented in flowing water. Most of the species need a good supply of oxygen and few larvae are bottom dwellers. Many species emerge early in spring and may be scarce in summer. Other species live in stagnant and even temporary water bodies. • information about the life cycle and feeding behaviour of the larvae and their response to environmental factors such as oxygen conditions, current velocity and saprobity • special attention to the interrelations between these factors • general and specific aspects of the systematics, biology and ecology the genera and species • nomenclature and identification An invaluable tool for aquatic ecologists and water quality management. Book Plant Galls of Europe

Download or read book Plant Galls of Europe written by J. C. Roskam and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on Herbert Buhr's seminal keys of 1964-1965 (Bestimmungstabellen der Gallen (Zoo- und Phytocecidien) an Pflanzen Mittel- und Nordeuropas) and augmented with Houard's 1908-1913 work on Southern Europe (Les Zoocécidies des Plantes d'Europe et du Bassin de la Méditerranée). The authors have updated this with the research of a new generation of cecidologists, significantly expanding our knowledge of plant galls and their distribution. The 9,000 galls and malformations described by Buhr and Houard have been updated and 1,250 new galls described in more recent literature have been added. The nomenclature of both gall inducers and host plants has been updated, information about specific groups of gall inducers has been reviewed, and new insights have been added by a team of specialists. Moreover, they collected distribution data for the whole of Europe and, where available, adjacent areas.
