Book excerpt: The increasing capacity of medicine to intervene to save lives demands that we ask more and more questions about what death is, and why it matters. This series of studies on law, ethics and medicine contributes to the debate on when and how it is permissable to terminate life, to warn of death, and to deal with tragedy in its aftermath. The essays are wide-ranging, provocative and timely. Accessible to those from the worlds of both law and medicine, this work focuses uniquely upon an issue which is increasingly significant for both sets of practitioners.

Book Hanged for the Word If

Download or read book Hanged for the Word If written by Chris Phillips and published by Chris Phillips. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1952 a shopkeeper named Lily Volpert was murdered in the docks district of Cardiff, known as Tiger Bay. A Somali former merchant seaman, Mahmood Hussein Mattan, was charged with the murder, convicted and hanged. But 46 years later he became the first person in British history to have a murder conviction overturned after being executed. "Hanged for the Word If" is the first book in English about this historic case. Drawing on all the available documentary evidence, including the surviving records held by the police, it tells the story of the crime, the investigation, the trial and the execution. It traces the later history of some of the people involved, and relates how another murder and an attempted murder raised doubts about Mattan's guilt. It describes the campaign to reopen the case in the 1990s and the appeal that overturned his conviction. And finally it tries to answer the question of who really killed Lily Volpert in 1952.

Book excerpt: Crash Course tells of a year in the life of Abergavenny solicitor Alan Barrington, from the time he is called out to the police station to advise Craig Williams, who has been arrested for Armed robbery of a petrol station a case which quickly turns into murder until the final day of Craigs trial. The evidence against him appears damning, but Craig claims not to remember anything about the crime. Alan has his work cut out to establish a defence. Meanwhile, he has plenty of other cases to deal with, and we get an insight into the practice of a solicitors firm in a small town, meet some of the clients, and hear their stories, from the tragic to the macabre. The year in question starts on 21 June 2001, and the book contains sidelong glimpses at the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the first Harry Potter film. Wales fail in the Six Nations Rugby, England beat both Germany and Argentina at football, Paula Radcliffe wins the London Marathon, and Tim Henman loses in the semifinals at Wimbledon. The Queen Mother dies, along with Princess Margaret and Spike Milligan. We also encounter Alans private life and his family, his disastrous marriage to Samantha, and his affair with Amanda. To cap it all, Alan now finds his own life threatened. A bomb explodes in his car. More by luck than judgment, he survives an attack on his car and assassination attempts in his office, on the M4 motorway, and in his own home. The different strands of the story proceed side by side and reach their climax with Craigs trial and the final revelations, which prompt Alan to ponder, not for the first time, the meaning and proximity of Hell.

This book is essential for both legal practitioners and people studying Irish law. Recent important legislation examined in the book includes: Criminal Law (Defence and the Dwelling) Act 2011, Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2011, Defamation Act 2009, Consumer Protection Act 2007, Civil Liability and Courts Act 2004 and Personal Injuries Assessment Board Act 2003. Key developments and case law are examined in areas such as pure economic loss, limitations and purchase of financial products, vicarious liability for sexual assaults, damages, privacy, defamation, psychiatric injury, liability of public authorities, employers' liability, professional negligence, defective buildings and products and occupiers' liability. First published in 1980, Law of Torts has long been a cornerstone work in Irish law, indeed in the foreword to the first edition Judge Brian Walshe noted that the book represented a challenge to the 'unquestioned assumption that English text-books would satisfy all needs.'
