Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chaucer and the Seven Deadly Sins Vitry takes his stand upon Proverbs XXII, 6, Train up a child in the way he should go, etc. 23 Much more to our purpose is the close resemblance between many lines of the Physician's Tale and the well-known patristic tracts on Virginity. The moral traits of Virginia - her humil ity, her modesty of bearing and array, her abstinence from wine, her discretion in speech, her avoidance of society, her dislike of feasts and dances - areprecisely those pre scribed to the consecrated maiden in Ambrose's famous treatise, De Virginibus. Ambrose's presentation of the ideal of virginity and of the perils to which the lamb is subjected from wolves (cf. 0. T., C. 102) culminates, as in Chaucer, with a solemn warning to mothers and fathers (iii, vi).25 And the ten-line application at the close of the Tale (c'. 27 7 is the traditional end ing of an ensample of Sin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Seven Deadly Sins As the subject of this book may, by its novelty in Protestant religious literature, attract the attention of preachers desirous of leading their flocks to fresh fields and pastures new, it may be mentioned that its history, as a theological topic, is given in zockler's Das Lehrst'ieck van den Sieben Hauptsfinden, and that each of the seven sins is discussed with great acuteness and comprehensive ness in aquinas' Summa (secunda Secundoe). Download or read book Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins written by John Gower and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Seven Deadly Sins: Being the Confessio Amantis of John Gower But in all these texts, and especially in Dr. Pauli's, most of the lines are right for those whose previous training has enabled them to read Old English. There is really nothing wanted but a little help to right accentuation to enable any reader, with or with out previous training in Old English, to enjoy the Confessio Amantis. Of course a fallible and mortal editor cannot avoid some slips in the line for line accentuation of a poem of lines. I believe, however, that the reader here has Gower's song more nearly than in any former edition given as he sang it him self, nothing modernised, but rather with a few words carried back to their original form for the recovery of the right rhythm of a line. Gower's poem in this edition is so far from being jagged and unmusical that, I hope, there is not a broken line in it from first to last. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER IV. The Sins in Common Life. THERE is no popular literature of the Middle Ages extant, which quite corresponds to the religious plays in influence over the lives of the common people: but the man who, outside the plays, was the great moving force in religious England of the fourteenth century was John Wycliffe (1325-1 384?), and there is in the library of Trinity College, Dublin, a MS. reputed to be by him on the Seven Deadly Sins. It is of parchment, six-and-a-half by four-and-a-half inches in diameter, in small handwriting, containing thirtytwo lines to a page. It is catalogued as "WiclifFs Tracts: The Creed and the Seven Deadly Sins," and the evidence as to its authorship was sufficient to satisfy Dr. Thomas Arnold, and to cause him to include it in his "Select English Works of Wycliffe." But Wycliffe had all the qualities and literary methods of a successful journalist, and if he lived to-day would almost certainly be a leader writer for the popular press, whereas this treatise--especially if it is read by the side of the prose treatise of Chaucer--is deadly dull. Even Wycliffe's name, supposing it to be by him, could hardly have made it popular, and we have to look elsewhere to trace the influence of the Sins in common life. In the year 1493 tnere was published in Paris a remarkable volume entitled "Le Compost et kalendrier des bergiers," which ten years later (1503) was translated into English at the cost of Richard Pynson by the title of "The Kalendar of Shepherds." It was a most popular book in France, and it speedily became popular in England, and there is no wonder in this, for it is perhaps one of the most interesting books which the fifteenth century produced. The name of its author, or authors, is unknown, but they...

Book excerpt: "Today our nation saw evil." - President George W. Bush, September 11th 2001 Evil! Like a zombie back from the grave, it has arisen--a word many of us had long ago relegated to Sunday sermons, video games and horror flicks. But of course, evil is not old fashioned, nor has it ever gone away, and may be as robust as ever. So what is evil? Does it exist? Veteran journalist Bill Hart tries to drag evil out of the darkness and hold it up to the light. In doing so, he has written a very readable account of 5,000 years of philosophy, theology and human history as it reflects and refines its notion of evil. More than an explanation of why bad things happen, Evil: A Primer is a tour through the nether regions in search of what we really know.

Book Life Records of Chaucer

Download or read book Life Records of Chaucer written by Richard Brerelay and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life-Records of Chaucer: The Robberies of Chaucer The Public Records still continue to furnish additional notices, which are of use in filling up the existing gaps in the life of Chaucer. The facts, however, which are thus derived from the still unexplored MS sources, can only be obtained with great difficulty. Work of this description, without referential aids to afford a clue to the contents of the various classes of records, must at all times be exceedingly laborious, and only too frequently the results fail to repay the time and labour expended in searching. The particulars hitherto gleaned from such sources by Chaucer's biographers, were doubtless only brought to light by much research, and yet from the references given, it would seem that but a few classes of records - though perhaps the most important ones, - have been thoroughly sifted, thus leaving ample opportunities for further searches to future gleaners. Nearly all the documents printed in 1803 by Godwin, in his Life of Chaucer, were taken from the Patent, Close, and French Rolls; later on, in 1843, an examination of the Issue Rolls of the Exchequer added many material facts, which were then made public for the first time by Sir Harris Nicolas in his Memoir of the Poet. This Memoir contained a complete collection of all the documentary evidence bearing on the Life of Chaucer known at that period, and the Chancery Miscellaneous Rolls, the Wardrobe Accounts, and the Duchy of Lancaster Records, were also included in the field of research. Though from this it would appear, that all the most productive sources of information have been exhausted, still, there are vast collections of records which remain to be examined; that they should have been left untouched can hardly be wondered at, if we consider the dubious chances of success, and the time which would be required to complete such a task.
