Extrait: Le persan est une race de chat a poil long originaire d'Iran. Ce chat de taille moyenne a grande est caracterise par sa silhouette toute en rondeur et son visage au museau tres court. Reconnue depuis la fin du siecle, la race est d'abord modifiee par les Anglais, puis essentiellement par les Etats-Unis apres la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La selection menee par les eleveurs a permis le developpement d'une grande variete de robes, mais aussi d'une forme de visage tres ecrasee et controversee. De nombreuses races sont egalement issues ou ameliorees par le persan, notamment l'exotic shorthair. L'elevage du chat persan se caracterise par un entretien regulier de sa fourrure, de ses yeux et de ses oreilles. Le persan peut egalement etre atteint par une maladie hereditaire, la polykystose renale type dominant (PKD). Le caractere placide et casanier du persan lui confere une propension a la vie en appartement. Tres populaire, cette race se retrouve dans toutes les expositions felines; c'est egalement le chat de race le plus vendu dans le monde. Le persan fait de nombreuses apparitions dans les livres et le cinema. Le nom de la race fait reference a l'un des ancetres du persan, il s'agit de l'angora turc. Cette race, qui proviendrait des frontieres de la Turquie et de l'Iran, a savoir la Perse, a donne au persan le gene responsable de son pelage a poils longs. C'est pour cela que le mot persan a ete choisi pour nommer la race. Un autre ancetre presume serait une race de chat trouvee au Khorassan qui possedait de longs poils gris.
