He married Jemima Norwood and lived in North Carolina all of his life. They were the parents of 11 children. He fought and was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg and died later in 1878 at his home near Snow Camp. Descendants lived primarily in North Carolina, Virginia and Illinois.
