"In Bluebird, Bluebird Attica Locke had both mastered the thriller and exceeded it."-Ann Patchett When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules -- a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home. When his allegiance to his roots puts his job in jeopardy, he travels up Highway 59 to the small town of Lark, where two murders -- a black lawyer from Chicago and a local white woman -- have stirred up a hornet's nest of resentment. Darren must solve the crimes -- and save himself in the process -- before Lark's long-simmering racial fault lines erupt. From a writer and producer of the Emmy winning Fox TV show Empire, Bluebird, Bluebird is a rural noir suffused with the unique music, color, and nuance of East Texas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julie Zickefoose lives for the moment when a wild, free living bird that she has raised or rehabilitated comes back to visit her; their eyes meet and they share a spark of understanding. Her reward for the grueling work of rescuing birds—such as feeding baby hummingbirds every twenty minutes all day long—is her empathy with them and the satisfaction of knowing the world is a birdier and more beautiful place. The Bluebird Effect is about the change that's set in motion by one single act, such as saving an injured bluebird—or a hummingbird, swift, or phoebe. Each of the twenty five chapters covers a different species, and many depict an individual bird, each with its own personality, habits, and quirks. And each chapter is illustrated with Zickefoose's stunning watercolor paintings and drawings. Not just individual tales about the trials and triumphs of raising birds, The Bluebird Effect mixes humor, natural history, and memoir to give readers an intimate story of a life lived among wild birds.

Book excerpt: Nothing is “Beyond Belief” Imagination is the key to creating a new reality! Whatever you can imagine, you can implement. Whatever you believe to be actually creates the world you see. Life doesn’t just happen to you. It responds to you and the thoughts that you are creating on a continuing basis. Although thoughts are not tangible, they are programmable and powerful. Thoughts can transform the abstract into the absolute. This book is about creative visualization or wishcraft which is a way of thinking that can change your life. The principles proposed in this book can propel you from poverty to prosperity and jumpstart your JOY as you learn how to transform your thoughts into reality. The process starts with a dream, a desire, or even just a wish. Wishes come in all sizes. One can wish small or one can wish big or tall. One can even choose not to wish at all, but wishing is really the key to creating a new reality. Everything that you can conceive of already exists or you couldn’t even conceive of it. Creative visualization simply makes the invisible visible! Your beliefs are the key to making the invisible materialize. The world can be yours to have and to hold once you take control of your own destiny. That doesn’t mean that you can control the events that will happen in your life, but you can control how you envision those events. Those visualizations can either empower you to excel or cripple you in crisis. If you want your life to change, try doing something strange. If you want your life to be different, do different, think different. Sometimes all that you need to change is your mind and your beliefs! Stop setting limits on your life! Book The Ghost People of The Everglades

Download or read book The Ghost People of The Everglades written by Barbara Tyner Hall and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last frontier is no more. Commercial fishing has been banned in Everglades National Park, and the locals were forced to find other means of work, but no one expected drug-smuggling to become big business in a small sleepy fishing village with less than one thousand people in population called Everglades City, Florida, and an island called Chokoloskee. The intertwined and dense mangrove system of the Ten Thousand Islands that surrounded the area and with remote locations provided a perfect environment for smugglers to bring and hide their drugs until they could deliver them for big profits. The Daniels family knew the backcountry of the Everglades and the complicated waterways of the area and knew how to travel through the shallow and treacherous waters and go through other passages unknown to anybody else. The Daniels family were sought after and hired to bring in large loads of drugs from South and Central America, as well as a few other countries. This family was born in the area and knew it like the backs of their hands. The Daniels crew was dubbed the "Saltwater Cowboys" because of their daring and reckless style and the "Ghost People of the Everglades" because they could disappear at a blink of an eye. Their wild and daring stunts happened on the high seas as well as in the complicated waterways of the Ten Thousand Islands. These boys could turn into a cluster of mangroves and disappear into another waterway just behind it. This adventurous family that turned outlaw became the largest importer of drugs into the United States that ran throughout our country. This area was world-renowned to some of the largest cartels or drug-smuggling rings around today and now call Everglades National Park their home.

Growing up in northeastern North Carolina, John Luton marveled as his father told stories about his childhood and World War II adventures. Bluebird in Belgium relates many of those wonderful stories. Bluebird in Belgium is a heartwarming tale of childhood innocence, the love of family, and a search for meaningful existence during war and peace. It is also a tale of joyful encounters, painful separations, and the miracle of memory. Discover the answer to the question that will not let him go: In the end, is life worth the struggle?

Book Donald Campbell

Download or read book Donald Campbell written by David Tremayne and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-09-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generations are familiar with the haunting black and white television footage of Donald Campbell somersaulting to his death in his famous Bluebird boat on Coniston Water in January, 1967. It has become an iconic image of the decade. His towering achievements, and the drama of his passing, are thus part of the national psyche. But what of the man himself? The son of the legendary Sir Malcolm Campbell who was famous for being the ultimate record-breaker of the inter-war years - he broke the land speed record nine times and the water speed record four times with his Bluebird cars and boats - Donald Campbell was born to speed. He was outgoing and flamboyant, yet carefully orchestrated the image he presented to the world. Some saw him as a playboy adventurer; others, such as the radio producer on the twenty-first anniversary of his death, as a reckless daredevil with a death wish. He was known to take solace in extra-marital dalliances, and was obsessed with spiritualism. And in his final years, battered by a 360-mph accident while attempting the land record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, and his prolonged and anti-climactic subsequent effort on the treacherous Lake Eyre in Australia, Campbell appeared a haggard and often frightened man. He had become trapped on his record-breaker's treadmill as he continually sought to prove himself to his illustrious father, in whose long shadow he felt forever trapped. DONALD CAMPBELL: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK paints a fascinating portrait of an intense, complex, superstitious yet abnormally brave man who was driven not only by the desire to prove that he was worthy of the mantle of his father, but also by his fervent and unswerving desire to keep Britain at the forefront of international speed endeavour. This book generates a unique insight into how his desperate fear of failure finally lured him into taking one risk too many.
