Book excerpt: After overcoming a heroin addiction in her teenage years and striving to move forward, Amy Herrig faced an entirely different addiction twenty years later: money. She and her father, Jerry Shults, were thriving as the owners of the Gas Pipe stores in Dallas, Texas, as well as other successful businesses, when a government lawsuit threatened to take everything-their businesses, their money, and their freedom. Accused of crimes she hadn't committed, Amy spent the next four years fighting to stay out of prison, but that wasn't all she had to fight along the way. When one life-altering change after another shook up Amy's world, she gained a new perspective on herself and on what matters most in life. From an exhausting and demoralizing situation came a new outlook of gratitude, but also remorse and humility. Although Amy's actions in the past had not all been illegal, she had let the allure of money guide her decisions rather than using her moral compass; the shocking turn of events that resulted from those decisions led to profound changes and made a lasting impact on Amy's life.

To prevent the other ranchers from hanging his best friend, Lindon was compelled to take the law into his own hands …
Download or read book Bullets Bombs and Fast Talk written by James Botting and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While it sounds like the action in some crime-fiction book, it's not. Bullets, Bombs, and Fast Talk isn't a novel, and James Botting isn't a fictional character. One of the first members of the FBI's international Critical Incident Negotiation Team and a longtime member of the Crisis Negotiation Team in Los Angeles, Botting's career saw him take part - sometimes peripherally, more often personally - in almost every major hostage/barricade incident over the course of his twenty-five years as a hostage negotiator and SWAT agent. Wounded Knee. Patty Hearst. TWA 847. Cuban Prison Riots. Rodney King. Ruby Ridge. Waco. He recounts all those and more in gritty, bluntly honest, and often humorous detail as only a participant can. He highlights the successes and pulls no punches analyzing the failures. He vividly relates a number of times when he stared down death, and then came through unscathed." "Bullets, Bombs, and Fast Talk seems ripped from the pages of a novel, but it's real - intensely real - and Botting lived it. See what he saw, hear what he heard and said, feel what he felt, and live what he lived with this insider's personal account of his twenty-five years in the FBI."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Bobby Cinema has written seven detective stories in one book about each different character going through solving a difficult case, being in the action and deal with real intensive stuff they had to go through from solving cases. For these seven ordinary detectives and their team, their work usually ends up in a library, which is their sanctuary and a place to read and relax at the same time. The first detective series is called Raymond: Librarian PI. Ray Levenstein, a former FBI agent, took over the head librarian job from his friend Jerry who helped him get in the LAPD police academy and became his mentor when he grew up. He was forced into retirement when he was shot in the line of fire when he was a FBI agent. Ray was well respected and highly decorated as an FBI agent, but he decided to retire at a young age of thirty-five. He took over Jerrys job as a head librarian in the Los Angeles Public Library and decided to run a detective agency in his library since he has a PI license. He hires Kevin Sandler, Nick Arbuckle, and Alyson Harris who joined the PI team. Thank you for reading the Seven Librarian Detective series. I hope you enjoy reading them. Who knows, maybe I can come up with another princess story in another time. This is my seventh book that I turn my seven librarian detective stories in one book. See you next time, and the library is now closed. Good-bye!

Download or read book The Great Chain of Unbeing written by Andrew Crumey and published by SCB Distributors. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Crumey’s novels are renowned for their unique blend of science, history, philosophy and humour. Now he brings the same insight and originality to this story cycle whose title offers an ironic twist on the ancient doctrine of connectedness, the great chain of being. Here we find a blind man contemplating the light of an atom bomb, a musician disturbed by a conspiracy of radio waves, a visitor to Moscow caught up in a comic case of mistaken identity, a woman on a Greek island trying to become a different person. We range across time, from the Renaissance to a globally-warmed future, across light-years in search of hallucinogenic space-plankton, and into magical worlds of talking insects and bottled fire. Fans of Crumey’s acclaimed novels will occasionally spot hints of themes and figures that have recurred throughout his fiction; readers new to his work will delight in finding subtle links within the pieces. Are they all part of some larger untold story? We have nothing to lose but the chains of our imagination: what lies beyond is a great change of being. ‘The Great Chain of Unbeing is unboring, unusual and quite brilliant.’ Adam Roberts in The Literary Review 'It is a delightful introduction to his singularly riddling work - and in Crumeyesque style it is an intermezzo that doubles as an overture.' Stuart Kelly in The Scotsman The Great Chain of Unbeing, a book bursting with fertile fusions of ideas by this Scottish Borges .' The Sunday Herald
