Book Chasing a Chinese Dragon

Download or read book Chasing a Chinese Dragon written by James M Bourke and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the book Chasing a Chinese Dragon is a crime story with a difference. The dragon in the title is a young Chinese woman who embarks on a killing spree across Southeast Asia. She is chased by Simon Grant, a MI6 agent, who tells the story. He shares with us something of the secret world of SIS and the role of the secret agent ‘under the alien sky.’ The first killing occurs in London; several more follow across Southeast Asia, culminating in an attempt on the life of the chief of the Malaysian Special Branch in London. The killer pursues her victims with the cunning of a dragon. However, she is not a real dragon. The dragon here is a Chinese metaphor for a person seeking justice, retribution and redress. She is not a serial killer. She is a very complex character, deeply disturbed by legacy issues that remain unresolved in post-colonial Southeast Asia. At several points in the narrative the narrator stops to explain the colonial history of Southeast Asia and the ‘legacy issues’ that still remain unresolved.

It was a lawless place, dominated by the Triads, and which the police hesitated to enter. Strangers were unwelcome. Drug smuggling and heroin addiction flourished, as did prostitution and pornography, extortion and fear. When Jackie Pullinger set sail from England in 1966 she had no idea that God was calling her to the Walled City. Yet, as she spoke of Jesus Christ, brutal Triad gangsters were converted, prostitutes quit, and Jackie discovered a new treatment for drug addiction: baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chasing the Dragon is the story of a Boston Herald reporter's journey into Burma/Myanmar to interview the mysterious drug lord, Khun Sa. The features desk of an American newspaper may seem an unlikely launchpad for a journey into one of the world's most remote and dangerous regions, but for journalist Christopher Cox, it was where the story began. It would end nearly three years later in the almost inaccessible mountain fastnesses of Shan State, Burma, as Cox brought off a journalistic coup even hard-bitten foreign correspondents might envy: a rare personal audience with General Khun Sa, the man U.S. law enforcement dubbed "The Prince of Death," the man thought to control a third of the world's supply of heroin. Accompanied by an obsessed Vietnam vet who had given up everything in his single-minded search for American POWs left behind in Southeast Asia and an eccentric expat with close personal ties to the general, Cox was going to cross forbidden borders to enter a region long off-limits to Westerners. And armed with little more than a backpack stuffed with vodka, porno tapes, and cigarettes, he was going to succeed. His journey would take him deep into the Golden Triangle, a shadowy zone of banditry, drug smuggling, and the ghost armies of past wars. He would begin in the red-light district of Bangkok, with its sex bars and soaring HIV rates, then head up into northern borderlands newly discovers by package-tour groups, and finally cross a jungled no-man's-land into the world of the Shan, where tough tribesmen trade opium and precious gemstones for the arms they need to fight the Burmese.

Book Chasing the Dragon

Download or read book Chasing the Dragon written by Mohan Guruswamy and published by Pearson Education India. This book was released on 2010 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 2000s, India's economic performance has been celebrated and disparaged by different sections of the international policy community. The exuberance of India's own economic managers and business elites culminated in the dramatic failure of the 'India shining' election campaign in 2004. Against such a backdrop, it became imperative to examine India's true position in the world economy and specifically its relative performance vis-¿is China, the default benchmark for contemporary economic success. Chasing the Dragon: Will India Catch Up with China?addresses one of the most relevant questions of contemporary times-whether Asia's two giant economies will reclaim their historical position in the international political economy-and in India's case, critically examines its prospects for overcoming its disparity with its northern neighbour. Using empirical data compiled from diverse sources, it evaluates the legacies of the two professedly socialist yet very different systems in terms of human development and economic infrastructure. This book offers an extensive survey of the first decades after reforms in India and China, along with the economic changes in the post-reforms period as a whole, and the nature of the lead opened up by China. The role of investments made by overseas actors, the competition for natural resources, and the export markets that are bound to emerge soon between India and China are all explored and their implications discussed. The authors evaluate the prospects of India catching up with China, and indicate how this might be accomplished. Rich in analysis and debate, this book will be invaluable to students of international business, economics, international relations, the media, business houses, policy makers, and ministries of finance and external affairs.

Book Legend of the Chinese Dragon

Download or read book Legend of the Chinese Dragon written by Marie Sellier and published by NorthSouth Books. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient China, the different tribes lived under the protection of benevolent spirits that took the form of animals--fish, ox, bird, horse, and serpent. But, as often happens, the tribes grew envious of each other and began to fight amongst themselves in the names of their spirits. The children decided to declare a war on war by creating a creature that combined the best of all the spirits and would protect all the people. To this day, the dragon is a symbol of peace and plays an especially important role in the celebration of the Chinese New Year. This timely message of cooperation and empowerment makes this book especially appealing to trade and institutional accounts. Communities with significant Chinese populations will also have a special interest in this title. Catherine Louis' Liu and the Bird was a critical hit with review journals, teachers, and librarians.

Download or read book Beyond Bruce Lee written by Paul Bowman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to understand Bruce Lee, we must look beyond Bruce Lee to the artist's intricate cultural and historical contexts. This work begins by contextualising Lee, examining his films and martial arts work, and his changing cultural status within different times and places. The text examines Bruce Lee's films and philosophy in relation to the popular culture and cultural politics of the 1960s and 1970s, and it addresses the resurgence of his popularity in Hong Kong and China in the twenty-first century. The study also explores Lee's ongoing legacy and influence in the West, considering his function as a shifting symbol of ethnic politics and the ways in which he continues to inform Hollywood film-fight choreography. Beyond Bruce Lee ultimately argues Lee is best understood in terms of "cultural translation" and that his interventions and importance are ongoing.
