Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charterhouse in London: Monastery, Mansion, Hospital, School To the advantages which I have recorded, and of which I fear I shall have made but an inadequate use, must be added that of having survived into a day when the unearthing of much entirely fresh material has enabled us to explain much which before was inexplicable, and to set right a great many errors into which the earlier writers, for lack of this material, inevitably fell. It may well be that the discovery of further material in the Record Office or elsewhere will fill many a gap which I have had to leave, and will add my own name to the list of those whose histories need correction. I have made it my endeavour to state nothing in positive terms for which I have not found authority. It would be impossible always to quote that authority without cumbering the page with footnotes. I have been careful also to try and give to such words as undoubtedly, probably, possibly, their exact value in the scale, and where mere suggestion is used to let it be clearly seen as such. I cannot hope that I have fallen into no errors of my own, after correcting the errors of those that have gone before me. I can only claim that I have taken pains to avoid them. In writing the records of a place which in some shape has touched history either in the lives which were being lived within it, or in the lives of those that went forth from it on almost every day of its existence since 1349, it is inevitable that some mistakes will have crept in, certainly inevitable that many and many an interest should have been left out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Charterhouse of London: Monastery, Palace, and Thomas Sutton's Foundation London, In the fourteenth century, has been described in a modern poet's words as London, small, and white, and clean. It was indeed small, and it was known as the White City, and it may even have been cleaner inter nally than is Often admitted. But though small to our eyes, London, like England generally, had in the early years of the fourteenth century reached a prosperity and a population which it was not to surpass till Tudor times. The country from its insular position had been able to avoid the disturbances and desolations of the more frequent warfare Of continental Europe. Download or read book The London Charterhouse written by Bruno Barber and published by Mola (Museum of London Archaeology). This book was released on 2002 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the latest in the series of MoLAS monographs on the religious houses of medieval London, considers the London Charterhouse, a Carthusian monastery founded in 1371, just outside the walled city. The volume is primarily intended to report on the 1998 excavations in Preachers Court, part of the Inner Court of the Charterhouse, but also incorporates a reassessment of Grimes' post-war work, and the results of numerous small excavations, evaluations and watching briefs conducted within the monastic precinct between 1998 and 2000. The result is a new, fully illustrated account of the development of the entire monastery, with a particular focus on its service areas. Separate discussions examine the pre-monastic use of the site as one of London's Black Death cemeteries, diet within the monastery, the monastic economy, and the impact of the sub-urban location on the reclusive Carthusian order. Evidence for the post-Dissolution period - the wider setting of the 16th century mansion and the hospital established in 1613/14 - is also examined, in this look at one of London's most fascinating historic sites.
