And in the west a strip of blue sky, which was growing every moment larger and larger, showed that the weather would be clear and bitterly cold. The sun was not far from the horizon, and Lydia, seated by one of the windows, was watching a flock of snow-birds hopping about out side, picking up a handful of crumbs she had thrown them. Presently a gust of wind struck the house, making it tremble so, that she half believed it was going to rise and blowr away. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the English Oak I trust that the description of various parts of the country I have visited in my rambles will suggest to town-weary men the breath of fields, woods and wide spaces; and the changes in English scenery, from early spring to the full pomp of summer. That the question of afforestation is of national importance is shown by the findings of the Royal Commission; and it is to be hoped that a subject which has been too much neglected will at length receive the attention it deserves. Book The Oak 1938 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Oak 1938 Classic Reprint written by Louisburg College and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-03 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oak, 1938 Vtn the county of Franklin was formed in 1779 three commissioners wcrc appointed to locate the county seat and provide for the needs of the town and county. They purchased one hundred acres at the Fords of the Tar, and here has developed the town of Louisburg. These were wise men in that they at once made provision for the education of youth. On the elevation overlooking the Fords and surrounding country twenty-six acres of land were reserved for school purposes. The principal street of the city now divides the lot into halves. One of which became the property of the city schools. The other was secured by the Louisburg Female College Corporation, now Louisburg College. In 1779 a suitable building was erected and Franklin Academy for Males and Females started on its career of usefulness under the guiding hand of Matthew Dickerson, the maternal uncle of David Dudley Field. The charter was granted in 1786. But a few years later it was thought best to separate the male and female depart ments, and in 1802 the Louisburg Female Seminary was chartered. The school has had all the struggles incident to private and unendowed institutions, but at no time has its service to the commonwealth been small. Book Practical Forestry And Forest Trees of Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Forestry And Forest Trees of Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Edgar Laing Heermance and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Forestry, And, Forest Trees of Connecticut The section on Forest Trees of Connecticut was prepared some years ago. By our State Forester, in collaboration with Wilbur R. Mattoon of the U. S. Forest Service, and has been in use as a separate pamphlet. Most of the drawings of leaves and twigs were by Mrs. A. E. Hoyle Of the forest-service. The picture of the Charter Oak shown on the cover was made from the painting by Charles D. Brownell. The tree was a white oak, which, according to tradition, was saved from the original forest in 1636, at the request of the Indians. It stood near Dutch Point in Hartford, and was the hiding place for the charter of the Connecticut Colony during the Andros tyranny, in 1687. The tree blew over in a gale on August 21, 1856. Book Charter of the Colony of Connecticut 1662 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Charter of the Colony of Connecticut 1662 Classic Reprint written by Connecticut Connecticut and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charter of the Colony of Connecticut, 1662 Governor Winthrop was requested to act as the agent for the Colony. He sailed from New York in July, 1661. The letter of credit for £500 sterling, which he took with him, may be seen in the State Library. The amount was paid in wheat and pease. He succeeded in procuring a very liberal charter, which bears date April 23d, 1662. The charter was made in duplicate and sent in different ships. The duplicate probably arrived first, and was received in Connecticut in September, 1662. There are some trifling verbal differences between them, not, however, affecting the sense. In 1687 it became evident that the Colony was likely to be deprived of the charter, and measures were taken accordingly. There is a very curious entry on the Colonial Records in June 1687, of the pro duction of the (original) charter in court, and of its being left on the table with the key in the box at the adjournment of the Court, with no one responsible for its safety, the committee which had been appointed to keep it being discharged by their surrendry of it to the Court. Perhaps it was at this time that the charter was quietly taken by Nathaniel Stanly and John Talcott, and concealed in the famous oak.
