As he delves deeper into the investigation, Maier is led to the White Spider, a Nazi war criminal who has taken refuge in an ancient Khmer temple deep in the Cambodian jungle. The Devil's Road To Kathmandu: In 1976, Dan, Fred, Tim, and Thierry embarked on a journey along the hippie trail from London to Kathmandu. But after a drug deal gone wrong, they barely escaped with their lives. Years later, the remaining three friends receive mysterious emails inviting them to Kathmandu to collect their share of the money. They reunite, but soon find themselves entangled in a web of kidnapping and murder, spanning across the Himalayas. With the help of Dan's backpacking son, a tattooed lady, and a Buddhist angel, the ageing hippies confront their past and try to solve a 25-year-old mystery. As they venture amongst the Himalayan peaks, they are led towards a climactic showdown with their dark and dangerous history. The Green Panthers: The Green Panthers are a multi-national underground army sponsored by private entities, whose mission is to hold corporate polluters accountable. During the attempted rescue of a snow leopard in Siberia, they stumble upon Project SILEO, a plot by millionaires to abandon a dying planet due to climate change and pollution. However, the Panthers soon realize that SILEO hides an even greater threat to humanity. As they race against time to stop the Slow King's apocalyptic ambitions, which span from Britain to Thailand and the private space station Stella Blue, riots and unrest take hold worldwide. In a future world where everything is for sale, The Green Panthers explores themes of systemic corruption, capitalism, space exploration, and climate change, as well as the courage and nature of friendship.

Book British Pirates and Society 1680 1730

Download or read book British Pirates and Society 1680 1730 written by Margarette Lincoln and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how pirates were portrayed in their own time, in trial reports, popular prints, novels, legal documents, sermons, ballads and newspaper accounts. It examines how attitudes towards them changed with Britain’s growing imperial power, exploring the interface between political ambition and personal greed, between civil liberties and the power of the state. It throws light on contemporary ideals of leadership and masculinity - some pirate voyages qualifying as feats of seamanship and endurance. Unusually, it also gives insights into the domestic life of pirates and investigates the experiences of women whose husbands turned pirate or were captured for piracy. Pirate voyages contributed to British understanding of trans-oceanic navigation, patterns of trade and different peoples in remote parts of the world. This knowledge advanced imperial expansion and British control of trade routes, which helps to explain why contemporary attitudes towards piracy were often ambivalent. This is an engaging study of vested interests and conflicting ideologies. It offers comparisons with our experience of piracy today and shows how the historic representation of pirate behaviour can illuminate other modern preoccupations, including gang culture.

Book Sensation the Intuitive System and Designed Experience

Download or read book Sensation the Intuitive System and Designed Experience written by Qing Archer Zhang and published by Common Ground Research Networks. This book was released on 2023-10-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book redefines human learning by placing sensation and experience at its core. The book delves into the essence of what it means to be human and how humans best learn and flourish. Drawing on insights from evolutionary biology, neuroscience, learning science, and the arts, the authors weave together a rich tapestry of ideas that challenge traditional approaches to education. The authors argue that school and educational research often ignore fundamental aspects of human learning, such as empathy, intuition, and balance. By examining what “experience” really means when we say “humans learn from experience,” the authors propose a more holistic approach to education—much of which goes on outside school—that goes beyond talk, texts, and analytical reasoning. With examples from various media, particularly the wildly popular Japanese anime series Attack on Titan, the authors treat good teaching as experience design and show how experience can be a powerful force for learning and human flourishing. As our world faces unprecedented challenges and crises, this timely book serves as a clarion call for a transformative approach to teaching and learning that respects the nature of humans as distinctive sorts of creatures, urging us to create environments that nurture the full spectrum of human capacities.

Book Carol Ann Duffy

Download or read book Carol Ann Duffy written by Jane Dowson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only monograph to consider the entire thirty-year career, publications, and influence of Britain's first female poet laureate. It outlines her impact on trends in contemporary poetry and establishes what we mean by ‘Duffyesque’ concerns and techniques. Discussions of her writing and activities prove how she has championed the relevance of poetry to all areas of contemporary culture and to the life of every human being. Individual chapters discuss the lyrics of ‘love, loss, and longing’; the socially motivated poems about the 1980s; the female-centred volumes and poems; the relationship between poetry and public life; and poetry and childhood and written for children. The book should whet the appetite of readers who know little of Duffy’s work to find out more, while providing students and scholars with an in-depth analysis of the poems in their contexts. It draws on a wide range of critical works and includes an extensive list of further reading.

Download or read book Half Sound Half Philosophy written by Jing Wang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1990s until today, China's sound practice has been developing in an increasingly globalized socio-political-aesthetic milieu, receiving attentions and investments from the art world, music industry and cultural institutes, with nevertheless, its unique acoustic philosophy remaining silent. This book traces the history of sound practice from contemporary Chinese visual art back in the 1980s, to electronic music, which was introduced as a target of critique in the 1950s, to electronic instrument building fever in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and to the origins of both academic and nonacademic electronic and experimental music activities. This expansive tracing of sound in the arts resonates with another goal of this book, to understand sound and its artistic practice through notions informed by Chinese qi-cosmology and qi-philosophy, including notions of resonance, shanshui (mountains-waters), huanghu (elusiveness and evasiveness), and distributed monumentality and anti-monumentality. By turning back to deep history to learn about the meaning and function of sound and listening in ancient China, the book offers a refreshing understanding of the British sinologist Joseph Needham's statement that “Chinese acoustics is acoustics of qi.” and expands existing conceptualization of sound art and contemporary music at large.

Book The Neuroscientific Turn

Download or read book The Neuroscientific Turn written by Melissa M. Littlefield and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2012-08-02 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neuroscientific Turnbrings together 19 scholars from a variety of fields to reflect on the promises of and challenges facing emergent "neurodisciplines" such as neuroethics, neuroeconomics, and neurohistory. In the aftermath of the Decade of the Brain, neuroscience has become one of the hottest topics of study---not only for scientists but also, increasingly, for scholars from the humanities and social sciences. While the popular press has simultaneously lauded and loathed the coming "neurorevolution," the academy has yet to voice any collective speculations about whether there is any coherence to this neuroscientific turn; what this turn will and should produce; and what implications it has for inter- or transdisciplinary inquiry. Melissa M. Littlefield and Jenell M. Johnson provide an initial framework for this most recent of "turns" by bringing together 14 original essays by scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and neurosciences. The resulting collection will appeal to neuroscientists curious about their colleagues' interest in their work; scholars and students both in established neurodisciplines and in disciplines such as sociology or English wondering about how to apply neuroscience findings to their home disciplines; and to science, technology, and society scholars and students interested in the roles of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity in the construction of knowledge.
