In 1960, two young tradesmen, a carpenter and butcher, leave the monotony of their German home. They travel to Australia in search of adventure and the reader is taken on a fascinating journey through the continent 'down under' of an earlier epoch. The adventurers become familiar with the Aborigine culture; the gangs of men known as 'the kangaroo hunters' and the ludicrous characters they meet in the outback. But disillusionment sets in and one of them returns. Will the other find his place in this fascinating country? Little does he realise that he is on the threshold of yet another adventure with this group of crazy Germans he has met in the pub. They work in the outback erecting farm buildings and return to Perth to spend their money on girls and their days on the beach. When cupid takes his bow, decisions must be made. The years have passed and they have become 'real dinkum Aussies'. Suddenly, they yearn for their homeland and the families they have left behind. Should they return? Where do they belong? Only one of them will know.

Book excerpt: When teenager Darcy Abbott is sent to live with her surly grandmother and silent great-grandmother she uncovers a mystery regarding the death of her great-grandfather, Darcy Charles Fletcher, during World War II. In her quest for answers, she discovers exactly what she has been searching for all her life – except she didn’t know it. Finding Darcy is a coming-of-age novel by award-winning Australian author Sue Lawson. This young adult fiction book is about the damage that secrets can wreak over generations – and the healing liberation of truth. Long-listed for a Golden Inky and short-listed for the Children’s Peace Literature Awards. For more realistic YA by Sue, read Allie McGregor’s True Colours, After, Dare You, Pan’s Whisper, Forget Me Not and You Don’t Even Know. Sue’s website is www.suelawson.com.au “This is a special book. The shadows the past casts on one family – and on our society – are brilliantly explored in the voice of a young girl. Sue Lawson manages to weave the profound with the everyday language of a teenager.” Jackie French. “Written in teenage vernacular, humorous and topical, the novel is nevertheless a serious commentary on the effects of name-calling and cyber-bullying on adolescents. The strength of this novel is that it manages to be quite didactic about the issue, as well as the evils of racism and government indifference, while still engaging teenagers in a relevant school scenario. Recommended.” Magpies magazine “Finding Darcy is a compelling journey of discovery … Darcy is a fully-developed, likeable character who struggles to adapt to her challenging new living environment. Issues of family secrets, bullying, racism, small town small-mindedness are all handled realistically and sensitively.” Aussie Reviews “Intense, skilful writing makes this rather serious novel a thoroughly memorable read, provoking the reader to pause and think deeply about the futility, destructiveness and pain of war. As Darcy learns, if we worked a little harder to understand and value one another, the world would be a much more peaceful place in which to live. Highly recommended.” NSW Association of Gifted & Talented Children “Lawson has a beautiful way of sharing her world with the reader and the storyline had me entirely invested in the outcome … The humour, drama and tension of this novel, along with the peppering of our country’s war history, is an amazing read exploring the relationships between four generations of women.” Persnickety Snark “Fiction firmly based in Australian history, Finding Darcy is a book which will help young readers not only understand the effects of war, but maybe understand their own families a little more … From the first page to the last I was extremely moved.” The Reading Stack

The villagers have just heard that their mayor’s precious ceremonial regalia has been stolen. Who could have taken it? The friends platypus, brush turkey, and possum are falsely accused of the dastardly theft, following a failed attempt to persuade sergeant bulldog to rescue a rabbit from two nasty foxes that ambushed the rabbit and put him in a sugar bag. The king of the foxes has also trapped an unsuspecting goose and put her in a bag. A more subtle enticement is carried out by a cat who wrongly thinks she’s in league with the foxes. She leads a brush turkey into a trap, only to find she’s also caged and ready to be cooked on a bonfire! It turns out the animals were trapped to furnish food for the grand foxes’ yearly feast. Police dogs and the sergeant bulldog go on a wild chase after the friends. Meanwhile, at the great fox feast, the village animals attack the foxes, scattering them into the forest, but the foxes gather together, and while the villagers are looking for them in the forest, the foxes make their way to the village, where they wreak havoc. They light another bonfire, and commence smashing, stealing, eating, and drinking until the villagers return and another fight begins. Where will this all lead? Good triumphs over evil in the end, but there are casualties and one mystery that remains for the next book in the series.

A luminous story of disclosure and concealment, of love and its opposites explored in their various tones and shades, and of those who embrace life’s alternatives and those who deny them, Octet’s canvas is broad, spreading from the Wicklow Stud in the southern hinterland of New South Wales to the battlefields of New Guinea, from the ballet stages of Europe to the Business world in London, from Edinburgh to Sydney, in a timespan which reaches from the Second World War to the turn of the century. Why did Michael make the gift of the cello?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australian poetry, prose and stories stand alone because their beginning can be traced back to Colonization in 1788. This facet of the arts began as entertainment around campfires at a time when hardships and adventures were romanticised. They characteristically followed themes of heroic achievement and individual experiences. Back then, the ethnic groups were English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh. Today, Australian literature keeps its original theme with added egalitarianism, blending the original transportation cultures with those of the Indigenous peoples, those born in Australia, the British Isles, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Poland, Russia, Turkey and other nationalities. Thus, literature and its sister, the art scene, is a powerful mirror reflecting Australia’s unique social and political contexts. I invite you to enjoy my contributions! Magda
