Download or read book Harvest of the Suburbs written by Andrea Gaynor and published by ISBS. This book was released on 2006 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drawing on sources ranging from gardening books and magazines to statistics and oral history, Harvest of the suburbs challenges some widespread myths about food production in Australian cities, and traces the reasons for its enduring popularity. It describes changing attitudes and techniques, and explores the relationship between food production and a range of contemporary ideas relating to work, social organisation, gender roles, health and the body, and nature. In doing so, it provides new insights into the tension between the quest for independence and the desire for interdependence in suburban Australia." --book cover.

Download or read book Origins of Australian Football written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume continues the story of football in Marvellous Melbourne during the 1880s. The VFA continued to add clubs as Melbourne's boom continued apace. Innovations in the game included the division of matches into four quarters, the waving two flags to signal a goal, and bells to mark the end of quarters. Victoria also played inter-colonial matches against New South Wales, Tasmania and South Australia. By 1890 South Williamstown, Prahran and University had dropped out of senior ranks, and the Ballarat clubs were excluded from competing for the VFA premiership, which left 12 senior clubs until Collingwood's emergence in 1892. VFA secretary T.S. Marshall was also at the forefront of fighting the game's turn towards professionalism, which was led by the powerful clubs.

Download or read book The Giant by the River written by Carmel Taig and published by . This book was released on 2014-10-26 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Giant by the River is a social history spanning 140 years, from the foundation of the Yarraville Sugar Works by Joshua Brothers in 1873 to its present status as Sugar Australia's head office and most productive refinery. For more than a century, Yarraville Sugar Works was owned and run by Colonial Sugar Refining Co. This history explores themes of workplace organisation, welfare, relationship to the wider community, health and safety, paternalism and patriotism.Comments and poems by former and current employees accentuate the camaraderie and challenges of this unique workplace. Connections formed within the works extended into leisure activities. Early on, the company put on works picnics and established sporting facilities on site. CSR Yarraville maintained its own turf wicket while fielding a team in the local industrial cricket competition. As the Yarraville Sugar Works consolidated, CSR's paternalism became more pronounced. Loyal employees benefitted from welfare schemes. At the same time, many accidents and fatalities occurred there. Growing unionism in the 20th century eventually achieved wages boards that gave workers a voice in negotiations over pay and conditions. Health and Safety improved greatly post war.The discussion of CSR's war effort begins with the China Contingent and extends through to World War II. To illustrate how World War I impacted on Yarraville, the author focuses on members of the Macdonald clan who enlisted. She also identifies recipients of gallantry awards.Of particular interest are the advances in technology in the areas of transport and packaging. To illustrate the changes, photographs are included from the CSR collection of the National Butlin Archives Centre, ANU and Sugar Australia's collection. The author's own photographs and drawings supplement the visual record. The cover design features her drawing of the Yarraville Sugar Works from the vantage point of Coode Island.

Download or read book Kouta written by Anthony Koutoufides and published by Hardie Grant Publishing. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Carlton fans adored him for his ability to win games off his own boot; opponents admired him for his seemingly superhuman feats. And today, AFL coaches still scour the fields for rookies of his ilk. But there's only one Anthony Koutoufides. For sixteen years, Kouta's name echoed throughout the stands. His one-handed pick-up brought him to the attention of his coach, but his strong mark, beautiful kick and sheer athleticism won over all the fans. A premiership player and twice All-Australian, Kouta certainly found success but his career wasn't always a fairytale. Chronic injuries restricted his game, personal tragedy left him reeling and when he was made captain, he had to lead the club through some of its darkest days. To farewell the game, Kouta tells all the pressures of mounting expectation, club politics, drug allegations and the changing face of football. He recounts his journey from the early days in Lalor to the big lights and pay packets of a national league, where controversy pops up at the slightest provocation. Insightful and entertaining, Kouta is a candid look at our beloved game from perhaps the greatest player of his era."--Provided by publisher.
