Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charles the Second in the Channel Islands, Vol. 2 of 2 Two days after the departure of Prince Charles from Jersey, his governor, the Earl of Berkshire, set sail for St, Maloes, intending to take passage from thence to Holland, The Lords Capel, Hopton, and the future In the History of the Rebellion it is asserted that Lord Berkshire went for England, which can scarcely be correct, as we find the copy of a letter dated at Jersey the 10 th of July, in which Sir Edward Hyde himself writes, I suppose my lord of Barkshire is before this time at the Hague. We are told by Chevalier that his lordship, his lady and their daughter, embarked on board a Dutch ship at St. Maloes, on the3d of July, and passing near Jersey on his way to Holland, the Earl caused a salute to be fired as a leave-taking to his old friends on the island. If he did go to England, his stay there could not have been of long duration; his reason for repairing to the Hague, whei-e he assuredly was in the month of October, is obviovxs: he had taken to wife a foreign lady of quality. Book England s Islands in a Sea of Troubles

Download or read book England s Islands in a Sea of Troubles written by David Cressy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England's Islands in a Sea of Troubles examines the jurisdictional disputes and cultural complexities in England's relationship with its island fringe from Tudor times to the eighteenth century, and traces island privileges and anomalies to the present. It tells a dramatic story of sieges and battles, pirates and shipwrecks, prisoners and prophets, as kings and commoners negotiated the political, military, religious, and administrative demands of the early modern state. The Channel Islands, the Isle of Wight, the Isles of Scilly, the Isle of Man, Lundy, Holy Island and others emerge as important offshore outposts that long remained strange, separate, and perversely independent. England's islands were difficult to govern, and were prone to neglect, yet their strategic value far outweighed their size. Though vulnerable to foreign threats, their harbours and castles served as forward bases of English power. In civil war they were divided and contested, fought over and occupied. Jersey and the Isles of Scilly served as refuges for royalists on the run. Charles I was held on the Isle of Wight. External authority was sometimes light of touch, as English governments used the islands as fortresses, commercial assets, and political prisons. London was often puzzled by the linguistic differences, tangled histories, and special claims of island communities. Though increasingly integrated within the realm, the islands maintained challenging peculiarities and distinctive characteristics. Drawing on a wide range of sources, and the insights of maritime, military, and legal scholarship, this is an original contribution to social, cultural, and constitutional history.

This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1640s were one of the most exciting and bloody decades in British and Irish history. This book interweaves the narrative threads in each theatre of conflict to provide an holistic account and analysis of the wars in and between England, Scotland and Ireland, from the Covenanter Rebellion to the execution of Charles I. Politics and War in the Three Stuart Kingdoms, 1637-49 - Stresses the need to examine the English Civil War within the context of the other conflicts in Scotland and Ireland, and vice versa - Explores key themes, such as the relationship between armies and elites - Assesses the extent to which the wars in and between the kingdoms were the product of religious and ethnic hatred Using a wide range of original and secondary sources, and incorporating the latest research, David Scott offers a challenging new interpretation of political structure and dynamics in the warring Stuart realms.

We now resume Chevalier's journal, and find that on Friday evening the 17--27th of April, 1646, about an hour before sunset, the Proud Black Eagle, a frigate of one hundred and sixty tons, mounting four-and-twenty guns, and commanded by Captain Baldwin Wake, cast anchor before Elizabeth Castle, having his royal highness the Prince of Wales and his immediate suite on board. No single piece of cannon was fired from the frigate or the castle by way of salute, no flag fluttered in the breeze, excepting the royal ensign on the bowsprit of "Le Noir Proudeagle." His highness's visit being no subject of rejoicing, but on the contrary a proof of the unprosperous condition of the royal cause, he thus arrived without pomp or circumstance, and was received with silent but sympathetic respect and loyalty. The prince was attended on board his frigate by the members of his council, and other lords, knights and gentlemen, in addition to six clergymen, all of whom landed without any public demonstration at the castle. In the course of the same night came the Doggerbank, of six guns, belonging to Hasdunck, and a smaller vessel1 of four...
