Book Charles Munch

Download or read book Charles Munch written by D. Kern Holoman and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mesmerizing figure in concert, Charles Munch was celebrated for his electrifying public performances. He was a pioneer in many arenas of classical music--establishing Berlioz in the canon, perfecting the orchestral work of Debussy and Ravel, and leading the world to Roussel, Honegger, and Dutilleux. This is the first full biography of a giant of twentieth-century music, tracing his dramatic survival in occupied Paris, his triumphant arrival at the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and his later years, when he was a leading cultural figure in the United States, a man known and admired by Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy.

Download or read book Revolution in Paradise written by Yehuda Moraly and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of the German Occupation of France constituted, surprisingly, a golden age for the arts: literature, theater, popular music and cinema. These works of art seem to be devoid of political impact. The widespread trend of unrealistic and fantastic art during this period is explained by some scholars as the artists escape from the omnipotent eye of German censorship. The purpose of the book is to show that, contrary to the accepted view, some of these films were intimately linked to the political situation. They convey the demonization of characters that, while not specifically presented as Jews nevertheless manifested anti-Semitic stereotypes of the Jew as ugly, rootless, low, hypocritical, immoral, cruel and power hungry. All five movies analysed (Les Inconnus dans la maison, dir. Henri Decoin, 1942; Les Visiteurs du Soir, dir. Marcel Carne, 1942; L'Eternel retour, dir. Jean Delannoy, 1943; Les Enfants du Paradis, dir. Marcel Carne, 1943) present characters not identified as Jews but who exhibit negative Jewish traits, in contrast to the aristocratic characters whom they aspire to emulate. They demonstrate, implicitly, central themes of explicit anti-Semitic propaganda. Yehuda Moraly addresses two current major misconceptions regarding the Cinema of Occupied France: (1) that the accepted view that there were almost no explicitly Jewish characters in the cinema of that time and place is patently incorrect; and (2) that the feature films of Occupied France were not as it is commonly thought free of the propaganda messages that permeated the press, the radio and documentary films. Analysis of these films brings out the contradictory nature of European anti-Semitism. On one hand, the Jew is the anti-Christ, throttling the world with disgusting materialism while on the other hand, he is representative of an ancestral stifling morality, which it is time to abolish.

Book Charles Munch

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jody Clowes
  • Publisher : University of Wisconsin Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book Charles Munch written by Jody Clowes and published by University of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Munch is well known in the American Midwest for his bold, luminously colored paintings of people and animals in expansive landscapes. For twenty-five years, his richly imagined images have explored the tangled relationship between tame and wild, between humans and the rest of the natural world. The elegant simplicity of his pictures has caused them to be described as "nature icons." Charles Munch, Dreaming in Color reveals Munch's transition from the poetic realism of his early work to the brilliant semi-abstraction of today, as well as the personal and artistic crisis at the heart of that dramatic transformation. Jody Clowes contributes a probing essay of critical analysis. Richard Ely's long biographical essay narrates one man's journey from suburban childhood to visionary landscape painter. The book also includes a chronology of Munch's artistic life and an exhibition history. Charles Munch grew up near St. Louis, Missouri, and now lives on a hilltop in southwestern Wisconsin. He has exhibited his paintings in twenty-five solo shows, eight of them museum shows. His work is in private collections nationwide, as well as in the collections of the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Chazen Museum of Art.
