Book excerpt: Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by the siblings Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807, intended "for the use of young persons" while retaining as much Shakespearean language as possible. Mary Lamb was responsible for retelling the comedies and Charles the tragedies. They omitted the more complex historical tales, including all Roman plays, and modified those they chose to retell in a manner sensitive to the needs of young children, but without resorting to actual censoring. However, subplots and sexual references were removed. They wrote the preface together. Tales from Shakespeare has been republished many times and has never been out of print. Charles and Mary Lamb appeared to have anticipated the enormous growth in the popularity of Shakespeare in the nineteenth century, when the book was one of the best-selling titles.

Book excerpt: In 'Tales from Shakespeare,' Charles and Mary Lamb undertake the ambitious project of making Shakespeare's plays accessible and engaging to a wider audience, especially the young readers. The anthology encompasses a diverse range of literary styles, transforming the Bard's complex narratives into prose tales that retain the essence and vibrancy of the original works. Their retellings not only simplify the intricate plots but also underscore the universal themes and moral lessons inherent in Shakespeare's plays, serving as a testament to the timeless relevance of his work. The Lamb siblings have meticulously preserved the richness of Shakespeare's characters and settings, making standout pieces such as 'Hamlet,' 'Macbeth,' and 'The Tempest' approachable without diluting their profound impact. Charles and Mary Lamb were not merely siblings but collaborators who bridged the gap between the 18th-century Romantic literary movement and the burgeoning appetite for accessible literature in the 19th century. They were deeply embedded in the literary circles of their time, contributing significantly to the dissemination of Shakespeare's works through their prose adaptations. Their efforts harmonize with a period of growing literary democratization, allowing readers of varied backgrounds to engage with Shakespeare's themes of love, betrayal, ambition, and redemption. The anthology aligns with Romantic ideals by emphasizing imagination, emotion, and the intrinsic value of literature to educate and inspire. 'Tales from Shakespeare' is recommended for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the world of Shakespeare through an accessible and engaging medium. The Lambs' adept adaptations offer a unique opportunity to explore the breadth and depth of Shakespeare's plays from a new perspective.
