Book excerpt: In the CHARLES EASTMAN Premium Collection, readers are presented with an insightful exploration of Native American culture and history through the works of Charles A. Eastman. Through his literary style, Eastman brilliantly captures the essence of Indian life, paying tribute to the heroes and chieftains of Native American tribes while delving into the spiritual beliefs and traditions of his people. His rich descriptions and vivid storytelling bring to life the struggle and resilience of the Native American experience, offering readers a glimpse into a world often overlooked in mainstream literature. With a mix of autobiography, history, and philosophy, Eastman's works provide a comprehensive look at the complexities of Native American identity and heritage. Charles A. Eastman, also known as Ohiyesa, was a Santee Dakota physician and writer who dedicated his life to bridging the gap between Native American and mainstream American culture. Born into a traditional Dakota family but later immersed in white society, Eastman's unique background lends authenticity and depth to his portrayal of Native American life. His personal experiences and deep connection to his heritage shine through in his writings, making him a respected voice in Native American literature. I highly recommend the CHARLES EASTMAN Premium Collection to readers interested in exploring the rich tapestry of Native American culture and history through the eyes of a knowledgeable and passionate storyteller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is matter of history that the Sioux nation, to which I belong, was originally friendly to the Caucasian peoples which it met in succession-first, to the south the Spaniards; then the French, on the Mississippi River and along the Great Lakes; later the English, and finally the Americans. This powerful tribe then roamed over the whole extent of the Mississippi valley, between that river and the Rockies. Their usages and government united the various bands more closely than was the case with many of the neighboring tribes. During the early part of the nineteenth century, chiefs such as Wabashaw, Redwing, and Little Six among the eastern Sioux, Conquering Bear, Man-Afraid-of-His-Horse, and Hump of the western bands, were the last of the old type. After these, we have a coterie of new leaders, products of the new conditions brought about by close contact with the conquering race.

Book excerpt: Indian Heroes and Great Chieftains by Charles Alexander Eastman EVERY age, every race, has its leaders and heroes. There were over sixty distinct tribes of Indians on this continent, each of which boasted its notable men. The names and deeds of some of these men will live in American history, yet in the true sense they are unknown, because misunderstood. I should like to present some of the greatest chiefs of modern times in the light of the native character and ideals, believing that the American people will gladly do them tardy justice. Eastman was so named because his mother died following his birth. He was the last of five children of Wakantakawin, a mixed-race woman also known as Winona (meaning "First-Born Daughter" in the Dakota language) or Mary Nancy Eastman.[1] She and Eastman's father, a Santee Dakota named Wak-anhdi Ota (Many Lightnings), lived on a Santee Dakota reservation near Redwood Falls, Minnesota."
