Book Thackeray

Download or read book Thackeray written by D. J. Taylor and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and evocative portrait of one of the greatest authors of Victorian England Who was William Makepeace Thackeray? Was he the wealthy dilettante who came to London in the 1830s and squandered his fortune on newspapers? Was he the impoverished freelance author of the 1840s who scrapped for every penny he could get? Or was he the great writer who published Vanity Fair in 1847, skewering Victorian society and ensuring his literary legacy? Throughout the many phases of his life, Thackeray remained an enigma. He was friendly but standoffish, generous yet miserly, confident and utterly terrified of failure. A century and a half after Thackeray’s death, D. J. Taylor has produced a biography that tackles the complexities of these contradictions and restores Thackeray to his place in the literary pantheon. His fortune lost by the time he was thirty, his personal life in constant torment, Thackeray’s story is as dramatic as that of any of his characters. In Thackeray, the man can finally be seen in full.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdote Biographies of Thackeray and Dickens The two great men to whom this little volume is de voted will pass, we may be sure, under the sharp scrn tiny of Posterity. They divided in their life-time the suf frages Of all who speak and read the English tongue; but they cannot be said to have divided it equally, for one sprang intoopopularity, a popularity which he retained to the day of his death, while the other labored long before he was recognized; his reputation was wrung from the world. They had their adherents, as Jonson and Shakes peare had theirs, and battles were fought about them, they remaining the while, let us hope, indifferent, but amused, spectators Of the fight. The biography of one has been written; the biography of the other has not. There will be no biography of Thackeray, if his wishes and the wishes of his daughters are respected. Book The Life of Charles Dickens

Download or read book The Life of Charles Dickens written by Frederic George Kitton and published by Lexden Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2004 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Charles Dickens's life is a truly remarkable rags-to-riches tale. His father's bankruptcy and imprisonment led to Dickens working in a blacking factory at an early age. These humble beginnings were to become a major influence upon his life and his writings. Dickens became a sensation in his own time and his legacy lives on. His books sold in tens of thousands. Audiences flocked to see him when he performed public readings of his works, inciting "Bozmania." Venues became sold out, touts sold tickets at inflated prices, and women fainted at his thrilling recitals. He went on to conquer America and commanded great fees for his performances. This long overdue republication, from 1902, chronologically records the events in the life of the "Inimitable Boz." We discover that he was not just an author but also an actor, publisher, journalist, editor, public reader, art critic, political economist and social reformer. We learn about the characters in his books; who inspired them and uncover something of the personality of Dickens himself. He was a meticulous workaholic with a desire not to be poor again and it was this desire that ultimately killed him. About the author Frederic George Kitton (1856-1904) was born in Norwich, England. At the age of seventeen he moved to London and joined the staff of The Graphic as an apprentice. He became a skilled etcher and contributed to artistic journals before becoming an author. Kitton was one of the founders of the Dickens Fellowship and most of his publications relate to the life and works of Charles Dickens including "Dickensiana: A Bibliography of the Literature Relating to Charles Dickens and His Writings" as well as annotating the "Rochester" edition of "Dickens's Works."
