Download or read book Black Picket Fences written by Mary Pattillo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-07-02 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, Mary Pattillo’s Black Picket Fences explores an American demographic group too often ignored by both scholars and the media: the black middle class. Nearly fifteen years later, this book remains a groundbreaking study of a group still underrepresented in the academic and public spheres. The result of living for three years in “Groveland,” a black middle-class neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, Black Picket Fences explored both the advantages the black middle class has and the boundaries they still face. Despite arguments that race no longer matters, Pattillo showed a different reality, one where black and white middle classes remain separate and unequal. Stark, moving, and still timely, the book is updated for this edition with a new epilogue by the author that details how the neighborhood and its residents fared in the recession of 2008, as well as new interviews with many of the same neighborhood residents featured in the original. Also included is a new foreword by acclaimed University of Pennsylvania sociologist Annette Lareau.

Download or read book Black Woman Redefined written by Sophia Nelson and published by BenBella Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's time for a REDEFINITION among black women in America. In its 2011 hardcover release, Black Woman Redefined was a top-selling book and took home a 2011 Best Non-Fiction Book of the Year Award from the African American Literary Awards. Author Sophia A. Nelson won the 2012 Champions of Diversity Award, given each year by diversity business executives in Fortune 100 companies. Black Woman Redefined was inspired in part by what Nelson calls “open season on accomplished black women": from Don Imus's name-calling of black female basketball players in 2007 and a 2009 Yale University study titled “Marriage Eludes High-Achieving Black Women," to the more recent revelation that First Lady Michelle Obama is concerned about being painted as an “angry, black woman." In Black Woman Redefined, Nelson sets out to change this cultural perception, taking readers on a no-holds-barred journey into the hearts and minds of accomplished black women to reveal truths, tribulations, and insights like never before. This groundbreaking book provides black women of a new generation with essential career and life-coaching advice. Based on never-before-done research on college-educated, career-driven black women, Nelson offers her fellow “sisters"—and those who know, love, and work with them—a feel-good volume for personal and professional success that empowers them without tearing others down.
Download or read book Diversity and Satire written by Charisse L'Pree Corsbie-Massay and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-10-28 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first textbook to explore diversity by demonstrating how satirical content can advance the discussion and change attitudes Engaging in diversity and promoting inclusion means working to remove institutional inequities and actively assist those who have suffered from these inequities. In our changing media and cultural environment, satire has emerged as an increasingly popular approach for promoting diversity and inclusion. Effective satire highlights the absurdity of marginalization processes, but misinterpretation can potentially reinforce historical power dynamics and perpetuate marginalization. Diversity and Satire examines how satire in both traditional media and new spaces reinforces or disrupts issues of marginalization in the United States. Critically analyzing many different forms of satire, this innovative textbook helps students understand what makes effective satire, describe the value of satirical content to others, and recognize how satirical artifacts advance or hinder efforts to diversify institutions. Beginning with an introduction to satire and how it can drive conversations about diversity, the text addresses how satire can be used to address historical discriminatory practices. Each chapter features satirical artifacts that contextualize the material as well as practical advice and tips to consider when engaging with satirical content and distinguishing satire. This textbook also: Illustrates the difference between satire that disrupts discourse and content that merely reinforces stereotypes Explains the historical relevance of satire and its importance in addressing the marginalization of certain populations Describes the nature of satire in the changing media and cultural environment of the twenty-first century Features engaging case studies drawn from a wide variety of satirical sources such as The Daily Show (with Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah), The Onion, Saturday Night Live, The Hunger Games, Weird Al Yankovic, Family Guy, Rick and Morty, Sinclair Lewis, MTV, and College Humor Based on the author’s popular course at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, Diversity and Satire: Laughing at Processes of Marginalization is an important resource for students, instructors, and general readers looking to explore disparities related to Class, Gender, Sexuality, and Race through the lens of satire.

Book excerpt: Three basic premises guide this highly successful introductory text - first that theory and research must be both comprehensive and clear, second that the text must show how sociology is relevant both to the study of society and to students' lives, and third that sociology can play a valuable role in teaching critical thinking skills. To that end, this solid, well-respected text combines a balanced three-perspective approach with excellent student-oriented examples, and distinctive social policy sections in a concise presentation that offers an alternative to full-length books.
Download or read book Coping With Poverty written by Sheldon Danziger and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservatives often condemn the poor, particularly African-Americans, for having children out of wedlock, joblessness, dropping out of school, or tolerating crime. Liberals counter that, with more economic opportunity, the poor differ little from the nonpoor in these areas. In answer to both, Coping with Poverty points to the survival strategies of the poor and their multiple roles as parents, neighbors, relatives, and workers. Their attempts to balance multiple obligations occur within a context of limited information, social support, and resources. Their decisions may not always be the wisest, but they "make sense" in context. Contributors use qualitative research methods to explore the influence of community, workplace, and family upon strategies for dealing with poverty. Promising young scholars delve into poor black inner-city neighborhoods and suburbs and middle-income black urban communities, exploring experiences at all stages of life, including high-school students, young parents, employed older men, and unemployed mothers. Two chapters discuss the role of qualitative research in poverty studies, specifically examining how this research can be used to improve policymaking. The volume's contribution is in the diversity of experiences it highlights and in how the general themes it illustrates are similar across different age/gender groups. The book also suggests an approach to policymaking that seeks to incorporate the experiences and the needs of the poor themselves, in the hope of creating more successful and more relevant poverty policy. It is especially useful for undergraduate and graduate courses in sociology, public policy, urban studies, and African-American Studies, as its scope makes it THE basic reader of qualitative studies of poverty. Sheldon Danziger is Director of the Poverty Research and Tranining Center and Professor of Social Work and Public Policy, University of Michigan. Ann Chih Lin is Assistant Professor of Political Science and Public Policy, University of Michigan.

Download or read book Organize Fight Win written by Charisse Burden-Stelly and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Communist women throughout the early to mid-twentieth century fought for and led mass campaigns in the service of building collective power in the fight for liberation. Through concrete materialist analysis of the conditions of Black workers, these women argued that racial and economic equality can only be achieved by overthrowing capitalism. The first collection of its kind, Organize, Fight, Win brings together three decades of Black Communist women's political writings. In doing so, it highlights the link between Communism and Black liberation. Likewise, it makes clear how Black women fundamentally shaped, and were shaped by, Communist praxis in the twentieth century. Organize, Fight, Win includes writings from card-carrying Communists like Dorothy Burnham, Williana Burroughs, Grace P. Campbell, Alice Childress, Marvel Cooke, Esther Cooper Jackson, Thelma Dale Perkins, Vicki Garvin, Yvonne Gregory, Claudia Jones, Maude White Katz, and Louise Thompson Patterson, and writings by those who organized alongside the Communist Party, like Ella Baker, Charlotta Bass, Thyra Edwards, Lorraine Hansberry, and Dorothy Hunton.

Download or read book The Pursuit of Happiness written by Bianca C. Williams and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Pursuit of Happiness Bianca C. Williams traces the experiences of African American women as they travel to Jamaica, where they address the perils and disappointments of American racism by looking for intimacy, happiness, and a connection to their racial identities. Through their encounters with Jamaican online communities and their participation in trips organized by Girlfriend Tours International, the women construct notions of racial, sexual, and emotional belonging by forming relationships with Jamaican men and other "girlfriends." These relationships allow the women to exercise agency and find happiness in ways that resist the damaging intersections of racism and patriarchy in the United States. However, while the women require a spiritual and virtual connection to Jamaica in order to live happily in the United States, their notion of happiness relies on travel, which requires leveraging their national privilege as American citizens. Williams's theorization of "emotional transnationalism" and the construction of affect across diasporic distance attends to the connections between race, gender, and affect while highlighting how affective relationships mark nationalized and gendered power differentials within the African diaspora.
