Book Measurement of the D0 Meson Production in Pb Pb and p Pb Collisions

This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first measurement of charmed D0 meson production relative to the reaction plane in Pb–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision of √sNN = 2.76 TeV. It also showcases the measurement of the D0 production in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement of the D0 azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane indicates that low- momentum charm quarks participate in the collective expansion of the high-density, strongly interacting medium formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, despite their large mass. This behavior can be explained by charm hadronization via recombination with light quarks from the medium and collisional energy loss. The measurement of the D0 production in p–Pb collisions is crucial to separate the effect induced by cold nuclear matter from the final- state effects induced by the hot medium formed in Pb–Pb collisions. The D0 production in p–Pb collisions is consistent with the binary collision scaling of the production in pp collisions, demonstrating that the modification of the momentum distribution observed in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp is predominantly induced by final-state effects such as the charm energy loss.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) In the mid-rapidity region, the yield of charged particles evolves smoothly as a function of [the square root of] sNN and collision centrality. We compare our results with a compilation of data from lower energy p + p, p + A and A + A collisions and discuss their implications for various phenomenological models of particle production.

Book excerpt: Here, we report measurements of the primary charged-particle pseudorapidity density and transverse momentum distributions in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02TeV and investigate their correlation with experimental observables sensitive to the centrality of the collision. Centrality classes are defined by using different event-activity estimators, i.e., charged-particle multiplicities measured in three different pseudorapidity regions as well as the energy measured at beam rapidity (zero degree). The procedures to determine the centrality, quantified by the number of participants (Npart) or the number of nucleon-nucleon binary collisions (Ncoll) are described. We show that, in contrast to Pb-Pb collisions, in p-Pb collisions large multiplicity fluctuations together with the small range of participants available generate a dynamical bias in centrality classes based on particle multiplicity. We propose to use the zero-degree energy, which we expect not to introduce a dynamical bias, as an alternative event-centrality estimator. Based on zero-degree energy-centrality classes, the Npart dependence of particle production is studied. Under the assumption that the multiplicity measured in the Pb-going rapidity region scales with the number of Pb participants, an approximate independence of the multiplicity per participating nucleon measured at mid-rapidity of the number of participating nucleons is observed. Furthermore, at high-pT the p-Pb spectra are found to be consistent with the pp spectra scaled by Ncoll for all centrality classes. Our results represent valuable input for the study of the event-activity dependence of hard probes in p-Pb collisions and, hence, help to establish baselines for the interpretation of the Pb-Pb data.

Book excerpt: This is a review volume containing articles written by experts on current theoretical topics in the subject of Quark-Gluon Plasma created in heavy-ion collisions at high energy. It is the fourth volume in the series with the same title sequenced numerically. The articles are written in a pedagogical style so that they can be helpful to a wide range of researchers from graduate students to mature physicists who have not worked previously on the subject. A reader should be able to learn from the reviews without having extensive knowledge of the background literature.

Book Charged particle Multiplicity Distribution in Pd Interactions at 300 GeV c

Download or read book Charged particle Multiplicity Distribution in Pd Interactions at 300 GeV c written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged-particle multiplicity distributions in 300-GeV/c pd interactions have been determined from an exposure of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory 30-in. bubble chamber. The data show clear evidence for double scattering inside the deuterium nucleus. We have been able to correct for the effects of the second scatters using a simple semiempirical model. The resulting pp multiplicity distribution is in excellent agreement with the pp data obtained from a p-H2 experiment at the same energy. The pn multiplicity distribution appears to be shifted from the pp distribution with $\langle$nc$\rangle$ pn=7.84±0.17.

Book excerpt: In the last few years, studies of heavy-ion collisions at high energy have produced new insight into the production of nuclear matter at high baryon density and temperature. While heavy-ion reactions at AGS energy are now well characterized, to clarify and test our understanding of the reaction mechanism of these collisions it is important to study the underlying processes involved. The study of p-A collisions should be particularly useful to understand in which way A-A collisions differ from the simple superposition of nucleon-nucleon collisions and it may be a specially severe test of the validity of the models in describing the transition from a single collision problem to a thermodynamic problem mainly defined by a few observables. In particular, p-A collisions should be sensitive to the way nucleons propagate in the nuclear medium and thus provide more insight on: the importance of rescattering, the stopping power of normal nuclear matter, and possibly on the influence of the nuclear matter density and temperature on the hadronic cross sections. In this paper we present the transverse energy and charged particle multiplicity distributions in proton induced collisions on Al, and Pb targets at 14.6GeV/c. These data have been obtained as part of the E814 collaboration and are thus immediately comparable to similar data obtained for 28Si and Au induced reactions at the same energy.
