Book Charge Transfer Processes in Condensed Media

Download or read book Charge Transfer Processes in Condensed Media written by J. Ulstrup and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecules in liquid and solid media are exposed to strong inter action forces from the surrounding medium. The formulation of a comprehensive theory of chemical processes in condensed media is consequently an elaborate task involving concepts from several areas of the natural sciences. Within the las~ two and a half decades very notable results towards the formulation of a 'unified' quantum mechanical theory of such processes have in fact been achieved, and by the variety of physical, chemical, and biological processes which can be suitably covered by this framework, the new theory represents an adequate alternative to the transition state theory. The present work has a two-fold purpose. Firstly, to provide a reasonably organized exposition of some basic aspects of these developments. This part emphasizes the fundamental similarities between chemical and other kinds of radiationless processes and includes the derivation of the most important rate expressions without resorting to involved mathematical techniques. The s- ond major purpose is to illustrate the 'unified' character of the rate theory by analysis of a considerable amount of expe- mental data from both 'conventional' kinetics and from such untraditional areas as low-temperature, strongly exothermic, and biological processes. Particular attention is here given to those systems for which a classical description is inadequate, and which provide a diagnostic distinction between several alternative theoretical approaches.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unified approach to charge transfer science provides a valuable tool for the increasing number of theoretical and experimental scientists involved in such areas as physical chemistry, electrochemistry, chemical physics, biophysics, biochemistry, and solid-state and surface physics. This comprehensive monograph presents the process of charge transfer in the traditionally independent fields of physics, chemistry and biology from a unified point of view. The numerous facets of charge transfer are presented coherently, emphasising the common nature of phenomena which at first sight appear quite different. Detailed theoretical overviews are presented and phenomena such as redox, electrochemical and radiative processes, polarons, proton transfer and biological processes are discussed. All major results of the different processes in physics, chemistry and biology are discussed in detail with special reference to their physical mechanisms, thereby allowing a unified conceptual approach to be applied

This text then explores the secondary structures, interactions, and replication processes of nucleic acids. Other chapters consider the complex biological process of protein synthesis. This book discusses as well the methods of photodynamic action, which is significant in detecting energy transfer from dye to the biomolecule and identifying the free radicals produced. The final chapter deals with the macroscopic properties of molecular systems, which refer to such concepts as volume, mass, pressure, temperature, and pH. This book is a valuable resource for biophysicists, organic chemists, biochemists, and biologists.

Download or read book Modern Bioelectrochemistry written by F. Gutmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As stated by Buckminster Fuller in Operation Manual for Spaceship Earth, "Synergy is the behavior of whole systems unpredicted by separately observed behaviors of any of the system's separate parts". In a similar vein, one might define an intellectual synergy as "an improvement in our understanding of the behavior of a system unpredicted by separately acquired viewpoints of the activities of such a system". Such considerations underlie, and provide a motivation for, an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of unraveling the deeper mysteries of cellular metabolism and organization, and have led a number of pioneering spirits, many represen ted in the pages which follow, to consider biological systems from an elec trochemical standpoint. is itself, of course, an interdisciplinary branch of Now electrochemistry science, and there is no doubt that many were introduced to it via Bockris and Reddy's outstanding, wide-ranging and celebrated textbook Modern Electrochemistry. If I am to stick my neck out, and seek to define bioelec trochemistry, I would take it to refer to "the study of the mutual interac tions of electrical fields and biological materials, including living systems".
