Book An Ottoman Era Town in the Balkans

Download or read book An Ottoman Era Town in the Balkans written by Velika Ivkovska and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Ottoman Era Town in the Balkans: The Case Study of Kavala presents the town of Kavala in Northern Greece as an example of Ottoman urban and residential development, covering the long period of Kavala’s expansion over five centuries under Ottoman rule. Kavala was part of the Ottoman Empire from 1387 to 1912. In the middle of the sixteenth century, Ibrahim Pasha, grand vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent, contributed to the town's prosperity and growth by the construction of an aqueduct. The Ottomans also rebuilt and extended the existing Byzantine fortress. The book uncovers new findings about Kavala, and addresses the key question: is there an authentic "Ottoman" built environment that the town and its architecture share? Through the examination of travellers’ accounts, historical maps, and archival documents, the Ottoman influences on the urban settlement of Kavala are assessed. From its original founding by the Ottomans in the late fourteenth century to the nineteenth century when the expansion of tobacco production in the area transformed its prosperity, the development of Kavala as an Ottoman era town is explored. The book will be of interest to scholars and students interested in Ottoman history and urban history.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Byzantine Visual Culture in the Danube Regions 1300 1600

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Byzantine Visual Culture in the Danube Regions 1300 1600 written by Maria Alessia Rossi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to broaden and nuance knowledge about the history, art, culture, and heritage of Eastern Europe relative to Byzantium. From the thirteenth century to the decades after the fall of Constantinople in 1453, the regions of the Danube River stood at the intersection of different traditions, and the river itself has served as a marker of connection and division, as well as a site of cultural contact and negotiation. The Routledge Handbook of Byzantine Visual Culture in the Danube Regions, 1300–1600 brings to light the interconnectedness of this broad geographical area too often either studied in parts or neglected altogether, emphasizing its shared history and heritage of the regions of modern Greece, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Czechia. The aim is to challenge established perceptions of what constitutes ideological and historical facets of the past, as well as Byzantine and post-Byzantine cultural and artistic production in a region of the world that has yet to establish a firm footing on the map of art history. The 24 chapters offer a fresh and original approach to the history, literature, and art history of the Danube regions, thus being accessible to students thematically, chronologically, or by case study; each part can be read independently or explored as part of a whole.

Book CHARDAK Between Heaven and Earth

Download or read book CHARDAK Between Heaven and Earth written by Judith Bing and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-25 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book by Judith Bing with illustrations by J. Bing and J. Brooke Harrington, with a Foreword by Richard Rogers. Across the Balkans ordinary people traditionally built chardaks, social spaces in their houses or separate structures nearby, always elevated and open to the outdoors, and according to folklore, places "between heaven and earth." This book, a celebration of Balkan architectural heritage, documents chardaks in text, photographs, and drawings, as a journey of discovery spanning from Croatia to Turkey. In exploring the architectural variations among chardaks from country to country, in a region of notable cultural complexity, the book touches upon history, geography, peoples, languages and folklore of the Balkans. This book is an outcome of 30 years of research and fieldwork on vernacular architecture in the Balkans.
