Book Charcoal Sketches of Old Times in Fort Wayne Classic Reprint

Download or read book Charcoal Sketches of Old Times in Fort Wayne Classic Reprint written by John W. Dawson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charcoal Sketches of Old Times in Fort Wayne Mr. Dawson obviously was a very temperate man. He apparently never ceased nor slackened in his denunciation of the use of rum. His fre quent references to the Black Beast of intemperance and the blighting mildew of inebriety reflect his personal attitude toward the use of liquor. Although there may be much truth in what he has to say relative to the use of strong drink. His personal opinions and observations do not seem rele vant nor pertinent to the general reader of articles of this nature. This, as well as his frequent and somewhat lengthy quotations from the Bible and literature, accounts for the aforementioned deletions throughout his sketches and the omission of article X. Charcoal sketches have been presented as Mr. Dawson wrote them. Although, some of the facts are not in complete agreement with the writings of other early Fort Wayne historians. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long, noted Civil War historian and long-time research assistant to the late Bruce Catton, reveals a neglected but fascinating chapter in American frontier, Mormon, Indian, and Civil War history. His lively portrayal of two volatile personalities -- Mormon leader Brigham Young and U.S. military commander General Patrick Connor -- depicts events which helped shape the "opening up of the West." While the Civil War raged in the East, the Mormons in Utah zealously continued to guard their cultural identity and church practices from federal control. At the same time, however, they lobbied hard for statehood, but were continually thwarted by a series of inept or antagonistic federal authorities. Drawing upon seldom-used archival material from the Mormon Church, Long's astute study depicts the earnest nature of this Mormon-federal conflict by focusing upon the battle of wills and words beteen Young and Connor. - Jacket flap.

Download or read book Civil War High Commands written by John Eicher and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-01 with total page 1062 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on nearly five decades of research, this magisterial work is a biographical register and analysis of the people who most directly influenced the course of the Civil War, its high commanders. Numbering 3,396, they include the presidents and their cabinet members, state governors, general officers of the Union and Confederate armies (regular, provisional, volunteers, and militia), and admirals and commodores of the two navies. Civil War High Commands will become a cornerstone reference work on these personalities and the meaning of their commands, and on the Civil War itself. Errors of fact and interpretation concerning the high commanders are legion in the Civil War literature, in reference works as well as in narrative accounts. The present work brings together for the first time in one volume the most reliable facts available, drawn from more than 1,000 sources and including the most recent research. The biographical entries include complete names, birthplaces, important relatives, education, vocations, publications, military grades, wartime assignments, wounds, captures, exchanges, paroles, honors, and place of death and interment. In addition to its main component, the biographies, the volume also includes a number of essays, tables, and synopses designed to clarify previously obscure matters such as the definition of grades and ranks; the difference between commissions in regular, provisional, volunteer, and militia services; the chronology of military laws and executive decisions before, during, and after the war; and the geographical breakdown of command structures. The book is illustrated with 84 new diagrams of all the insignias used throughout the war and with 129 portraits of the most important high commanders.
