Book The Cornish in the Caribbean

Download or read book The Cornish in the Caribbean written by Sue Appleby and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to look specifically at the movement of Cornish men and women to and from the Caribbean from the early days of colonialism. A fascinating subject for those with an interest in all things Cornish, be they in Cornwall, in the Caribbean, or in the wider Cornish diaspora. The Cornish in the Caribbean is the first study to tell the stories of some of the many Cornish men and women who went to the Caribbean. Some became wealthy plantation owners, while others came as indentured servants and labourers. Cornish men were active in the armed services, taking part in the numerous sea and land battles fought by the competing European powers throughout the region. Cornish officers and crew sailed on the ships of the Falmouth Packet Service which took the mail to and from the Caribbean. Methodism was strong in Cornwall and Methodist missionaries and their wives came to the Caribbean to evangelise both the enslaved and the newly free. The most striking transfer of Cornish skills to the Caribbean was to be found in mining. As Cornish mining declined, and the Great Emigration of miners and their families got underway, Cornish mining engineers, captains and miners went out to mines throughout the Caribbean. “Meticulously researched and highly readable” Bridget Brereton, Professor Emerita, University of the West Indies.

Book Biofuel development in Latin American and the Caribbean

Download or read book Biofuel development in Latin American and the Caribbean written by Cinthya Guerrero and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-05-29 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 100%, Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus, course: Environmental and Resource Management, language: English, abstract: In the light of availability concerns and environmental implications of fossil fuels, attached with the remarkable rise in the price of oil during the past several years; biofuels are getting a significant increase in interest worldwide from governments, private investors, farmers and the public in general. Nevertheless, the use of cropland for biofuels had become a very controversial topic. On one hand, promoters state that biofuels represent opportunities to increase the energy security and to generate environmental and social benefits (through greenhouse gases emissions reductions and poverty alleviation through rural development respectively). On the other hand, topics such as the effects on food prices and availability, soil fertility and erosion, competition for scarce land and water resources and biodiversity loss are also widely discussed as important concerns related to further development of bioenergy. Notwithstanding this, several developing countries around the world are turning into the biofuels direction to satisfy the demand of developed countries while contributing to their economical growth and/or diversifying their current options of energetic arrangements. For Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), a geographical area with privileged natural resources; home-grown energy crops emerge as an appealing possibility, especially given the example of Brazil, a historical leader in ethanol production. After assessing some core elements of the biofuel’s debate, the evidence seems to suggest that biofuels may represent a valuable source of renewable energy. Nonetheless, in order to represent a promise to the LAC region, local governments will be required to firmly normalize land use and agricultural activities, while cautiously shaping public policies. Whether the biofuels’ boom will represent an opportunity or a risk for the LAC region would depend on how each country regulate agricultural and manufacturing practices, including how many small farmers and workers from rural areas would benefit from the industry. Keywords: Renewable resources, Biofuels risks and opportunities, Latin America and the Caribbean, Ethanol, Biodiesel, Food vs. Fuel debate, GHG reduction, Holistic approach to biofuels.

Book Bioinputs Investment opportunities in Latin America

Download or read book Bioinputs Investment opportunities in Latin America written by Bullor, L. and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-14 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioinputs are a crucial element in the transition to sustainable agrifood systems. [Author] Their promotion and application are direct paths to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals because they allow the conservation and enhancement of biodiversity and increase the fertility of agricultural soils without compromising the environment or people’s health. [Author] Bioinputs are a vital element in the agroecological transitions and represent the entry point of production systems into highly demanding markets. [Author] They also provide a sustainable path towards increased yields and reduced costs in agricultural activity. [Author] However, there are still several risks and limitations to the region’s development and use of bioinputs. [Author] The study “Bioinputs: investment opportunities in Latin America” provides specific guidelines and recommendations for governments, agricultural producers and companies. [Author] This publication is part of the Directions in Investment series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme. [Author]

Book Tropical Agriculture in Transition Opportunities for Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Download or read book Tropical Agriculture in Transition Opportunities for Mitigating Greenhouse Gas Emissions written by Reiner Wassmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production from tropical agricultural systems will need to increase to satisfy the rising food demand of an increasing population coupled with changes in consumption patterns. At the same time, the agricultural sector is a significant source of greenhouse gases (GHG) in many developing countries, which can be attributed mainly to land-use change and methane emissions from rice and livestock. But how can we reconcile less GHG emissions from tropical agricultural systems while increasing productivity? Due to the interactive nature of these issues, this book is compiled of articles on natural resource management, as well as the socio-economic aspects of GHG mitigation. The scope of mitigation options in tropical agriculture is discussed for three different activities: (a) agroforestry; (b) rice-based production systems; (c) pasture/animal husbandry. Agronomic solutions alone will not be sufficient, as the institutional and economic frameworks within which farmers operate dictate whether a recommended agronomic management practice is acceptable. The prevention of deforestation, and the re-forestation of degraded land, could become key elements to national climate protection programs of some developing countries. Alternative management practices in rice-based and pasture systems may offer win-win options to reduce emissions and improve resource-use efficiencies.
