Book Drawing the Nude

Download or read book Drawing the Nude written by Stuart Elliot and published by Crowood. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing the Nude presents an exciting approach to drawing the human body. Divided into three parts, on structure, anatomy and observation, it introduces a set of principles and develops a treasury of ideas for the artist to follow. Whilst recognizing the importance of observation, it focuses more on a conceptual understanding of the construction of the body in anatomical terms. In doing so, it encourages the cultivation of more informed observation and accommodates those who work from memory, imagination and invention. Contents: the drawing of elementary forms that can then be distorted, transformed and combined, leading on to compound forms; explains the use of light and shadows to express form; explains the gesture of the figure through short drawings that analyse the flow of movement through the body; studies the musculo-skeletal form and provides a set of tools for analysing its parts; uses direct and concise drawings, alongside images of digital sculptures of human anatomy; gives practical instruction relevant to both the novice and the experienced figure artist, as well as those working within the visual effects and game industries.Superbly illustrated with 199 images that include digital sculptures of human anatomy and concise drawings.

Book excerpt: The new novel from the acclaimed poet and publisher asks fundamental questions about love and sex, friendship and rivalry, desire and power, and the age-old dance of benevolence and attraction between teacher and student. Sam Brandt is a long-term denizen of Connecticut’s renowned Leverett School. As an English teacher he has dedicated his life to providing his students with the same challenges, encouragement, and sense of possibility that helped him and his friends become themselves here half a lifetime ago. Then Leverett’s headmaster asks Sam to help investigate a charge brought by one of his classmates that he was abused by a teacher. Sam is flooded with memories, above all of his overwhelming love for his friend Eddie and the support of his most inspiring mentor, Theodore Gibson. Sam’s search for the truth becomes a quest to get at the heart of Leverett, then and now. The school has changed enormously over the years, but at its core lie assumptions about privilege and responsibility untested for more than a century. And Sam’s assumptions about his own life are shaken, too, as he struggles to understand what really happened all those years ago.

The latter, which Francine du Plessix Gray called “a tour de force of critical method,” is widely regarded as the most eye-opening analysis of the Johns’s work ever written. This edition includes a new preface and a handful of additional illustrations. “The art book of the year, if not of the decade and possibly of the century. . . .The significance of this volume lies not so much in the quality of its insights—although the quality is very high and the insights are important—as in the richness, precision, and elegance of its style. . . . A meeting with the mind of Leo Steinberg is one of the most enlightening experiences that contemporary criticism affords.” —Alfred Frankenstein, Art News “Not only one of the most lucid and independent minds among art critics, but a profound one.”—Robert Motherwell

Book Graphic Modernism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Art Institute of Chicago
  • Publisher : Hudson Hills
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780865592070
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Graphic Modernism written by Art Institute of Chicago and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 2003 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhibition catalog highlights a recent gift of works on paper to the Art Institute of Chicago from the Gecht family, longtime Chicago collectors. The catalog comprises 135 drawings, prints, and sculptures from the collection, all of which embody a broad definition of Modernism. The book spans two centuries and contains artists such as Cezanne and Van Gogh as well as Mark Rothko and Philip Guston. Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, and Picasso form the backbone of the collection with nearly 30 works of art apiece. Suzanne Folds McCullagh (curator of prints & drawings, Art Inst. of Chicago) provides a short introductory essay that tracks the evolution of the collection. Authored by a bevy of contributors, the well-written entries maintain a consistent tone and quality and strike a good balance between biographical information and interpretations of the work of art itself. While the Gecht collection is certainly quite a boon for the institute, it is not comprehensive enough in itself to make the catalog essential for all art libraries. It does, however, belong on library shelves with strong modern art and graphics collections.-Kraig A. Binkowski, Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington 135 colour illustrations

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Twenty-seven years after his death, Roger Hilton's reputation as a leading figure in British 'abstract expressionism' continues to rise. Following the major retrospective exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in 1993 and the drawings survey at the Tate St Ives in 1997, this lavishly illustrated account is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of the life and work of this important artist. Hilton's extraordinary career is discussed in all its phases, from the intriguing earliest explorations in paint to the inception of his first abstract pieces around 1950 and the complex and intriguing interchanges of imagery and form that mark his final works. Adrian Lewis explains the artist's mature works as both attracting the viewer and resisting easy reading, and discusses in detail the artist's debt to the Ecole de Paris and his relation to the notion of the 'act of painting' that pervaded post-war culture.

Download or read book In Pursuit of Universalism written by Alicia Volk and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Volk's impressive study rethinks the East-West binary often reiterated in discussions of Japanese modernism by reinserting local aspects into the universalizing tendencies of modernism itself. The book makes an important contribution to the growing literature on modern Japanese art history by providing an alternative comparative framework for understanding the global development of modernism that decenters Euro-America. Rigorously historical in her critique, Volk destabilizes our understanding of the Japanese experience of modernity through the prism of Yorozu's singular vision of the self, leaving us questioning conventional wisdom and contented to wobble."--Gennifer Weisenfeld, Duke University "In Volk's affectingly stunning and deeply reflective study of the Japanese artist Yorozu Tetsugorō's work between 1910-1930, we have a profoundly historical reminder of how modernism everywhere struggled to meet the demands of the new with the readymades of received artistic practices. In this study of Yorozu's utopian universalist project, Volk has imaginatively broadened our understanding of the modernist moment and perceptively captured its global program to unify art and life, contemporary culture and history."--Harry Harootunian, author of Overcome by Modernity: History, Culture and Community in Interwar Japan
