Book Women in Lebanon

Download or read book Women in Lebanon written by M. Thomas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-28 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining insider and outsider perspectives, Women in Lebanon looks at Christian and Muslim women living together in a multicultural society and facing modernity. While the Arab Spring has begun to draw attention to issues of change, modernity, and women's subjectivity, this manuscript takes a unique approach to examining and describing the Lebanese "alternative modernities" thesis and how it has shaped thinking about the meaning of terms like evolution, progress, development, history, and politics in contemporary Arab thought. The author draws on extensive ethnographic research, as well as her own personal experience.

Book Bring Down the Walls

Download or read book Bring Down the Walls written by C. Dagher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lebanon is more than a country, it is a message': these words of Pope John Paul II illustrate Lebanon's post-war endeavor to preserve its age-old Christian-Muslim coexistence and power-sharing formula and to invalidate Samuel Huntington's assumption of a 'Clash of Civilizations.' Lebanon's current challenge is also the challenge of a whole region, the Middle East, where the fate of minorities, including Eastern Christians, reveals the prospects of democracy, pluralism and political participation. Carole H. Dagher, a journalist for Lebanese media as well as an academic, presents an insightful account on how Christian and Muslim communities emerged from the sixteen year-old Lebanese war, what their points of friction and their common grounds are, and what the prospects of Lebanon's communal representation system and pluralistic society are. She describes the central role played by the Holy See and John Paul II in bridging the gap between Christians and Muslims in Lebanon, and analyzes the impact other countries such as Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia have had on the power game and, conversely, the impact of Christian-Muslim interaction on the future of the Arab-Israeli peace process. Bring Down the Walls draws crucial lessons from the recent history of Christian-Muslim relations in Lebanon.

Book The Post Conflict Environment

Download or read book The Post Conflict Environment written by Daniel Bertrand Monk and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In case studies focusing on contemporary crises spanning Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, the scholars in this volume examine the dominant prescriptive practices of late neoliberal post-conflict interventions—such as statebuilding, peacebuilding, transitional justice, refugee management, reconstruction, and redevelopment—and contend that the post-conflict environment is in fact created and sustained by this international technocratic paradigm of peacebuilding. Key international stakeholders—from activists to politicians, humanitarian agencies to financial institutions—characterize disparate sites as “weak,” “fragile,” or “failed” states and, as a result, prescribe peacebuilding techniques that paradoxically disable effective management of post-conflict spaces while perpetuating neoliberal political and economic conditions. Treating all efforts to represent post-conflict environments as problematic, the goal becomes understanding the underlying connection between post-conflict conditions and the actions and interventions of peacebuilding technocracies.

Book Warlords and Merchants

Download or read book Warlords and Merchants written by Kamal Dib and published by ISBS. This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in paperback, Warlords and Merchants examines the history of the Lebanese warlord/business establishment and illuminates local attitudes which have often seemed baffling to the outside world. The book provides a close-up study of Lebanese leaders and the business class. It provides a seminal illustration of, and insight into, the resistance of local cultures and small countries such as Lebanon to the juggernaut of globalization. Based on firsthand observations and knowledge of Lebanese history, economy, language, and culture, the author examines most of the issues that vex Lebanon today-sectarianism, traditional leadership, outdated business practices, an archaic economic structure, and a deep sense of historical grievances. Warlords and Merchants is a must-read for policymakers, business and political leaders, as well as students and academics with research interests in Lebanon, the Middle East, and international affairs.

Book excerpt: Throughout an ever-shifting body of work, David Maljkovi? returns to ?the question of form,? asking how considerations of form itself might illuminate the ebb and flow of ideologies, for example, or the overlaying of past, present, and future. While embracing a wide range of media?including photography, painting, video, sculpture, and various hybrids?the Croatian artist has developed distinctive methods of incorporating, and refiguring, his own earlier works in new installations.0Along with every exhibition, Maljkovicc translates his work into the form of a book, which becomes another lively medium for the artist. For 'Also on View', he collaborated with designer Toni Uroda to channel the queries of his solo exhibition at the Renaissance Society, which brought together elements from different projects to create a new presentation tailored to the architectural space. The publication features a dynamic array of images, a rendition of the artist talk Maljkovic? delivered on opening night, and an essay by curator Karsten Lund.00Exhibition: The Renaissance Society, Chicago, USA (09.02-07.04.2019).
