Book Characterizing Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children with Williams Syndrome Via the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale

Download or read book Characterizing Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children with Williams Syndrome Via the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale written by Tatiana Chichilla and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Williams syndrome, a genetic, developmental disorder, is characterized by behavioral symptoms including hypersociability and strong language skills relative to the level of intellectual disability. Some individuals with Williams syndrome have a co-occurring autism diagnosis, but no large-scale study has been performed solely to determine its prevalence. More research into the unique profile of these individuals using standardized measures is also needed. This study determined the prevalence of autism in individuals with Williams syndrome at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The autistic features of individuals seen in the Williams syndrome clinic were then characterized using the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale. Methods: 180 charts with a confirmed Williams syndrome diagnosis by chromosomal microarray were collected, and those with an additional autism diagnosis were counted. The Autism Spectrum Rating Scale was administered via a personalized link to parents of children with Williams syndrome and autism, as well as those with only Williams syndrome. Results: The prevalence of autism was 10.5%. On the five scales of the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale that were analyzed (T-score, DSM-5, Social/Communication, Unusual Behaviors, and Social/Emotional Reciprocity), there was no statistically significant difference between the scores of the Williams syndrome and autism group (n=7) and the Williams syndrome only group (n=9). Conclusions: The autism prevalence of 10.5% was in line with previous research that looked broadly at large groups of children with Williams syndrome, without selecting for particular features. The Social/Communication and Social/Emotional Reciprocity scales were the closest to statistical significance, and would be an interesting direction for future resource. The lack of significance may be due to the small sample size of the study, but large sample sizes in a rare genetic disease are difficult to obtain. These results indicate the importance of autism evaluation in individuals with Williams syndrome by a trained professional who can distinguish the overlapping features of Williams syndrome and autism.

Book Characterization of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Children s Picture Books

Download or read book Characterization of Autism Spectrum Disorders in Children s Picture Books written by Charlene Weaver and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-two children[alpha]s picture books portraying characters with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) were evaluated to determine how symptoms of ASD are being portrayed as well to determine common themes found in these books. Books were evaluated using behavioral checklists created using symptoms found in common ASD diagnostic rating scales for both autism and Asperger Syndrome (AS). Of the 42 books, 35 books had characters with autism and 7 had characters with AS. The most commonly found symptoms were relating to people, verbal communication, and taste, smell and touch responses. Personal characteristics such as gender and race were identified as well as other common themes: point of view and changes in characters with autism. Overall characters are being displayed realistically and positively. This study is relevant to teachers, librarians, and others who are interested in how accurate portrayals of individuals with autism in children[alpha]s literature may help them be accepted in society. A list of books used in this study is located in the appendix.

Download or read book Clinical Assessment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Johnny L. Matson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-09-02 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorder has received increasing research in recent years, with more information on assessment and treatment than can be readily assimilated from primary literature by clinicians. Clinical Assessment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorders summarizes evidence-based assessments and intervention for Autism across the life-span, providing clinicians with a practical overview of how best to assess and treat this disorder. The book begins with a discussion of what warrants a determination of being "evidence based" and a description of the disorder from a life span perspective. The book also provides a chapter on differential diagnosis of autism relative to other disorders. What follows are separate sections on assessment and intervention. These chapters discuss first how to assess and then separately how to treat behavioral problems, communication and social skills issues, academic and vocational skills, and the use of pharmacology and an assessment of possible pharmacological effects. Intended for practitioners assessing and treating children with developmental delays, the book provides clinicians with best practices for assessing and treating delays associated with autism. - Covers the full range of Autism Spectrum Disorders - Covers the lifespan - Focuses on evidence-based assessment and treatment

Book Autism Spectrum Disorders From Genotypes to Phenotypes

Download or read book Autism Spectrum Disorders From Genotypes to Phenotypes written by Valsamma Eapen and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-12-10 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Research Topic covers the pathogenetic processes in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that underpin the translation of genetic vulnerability to clinically significant symptoms. Available research data in ASD suggests that it is a neural connectivity disorder and that the social communication and related neurobehavioural symptoms result from reduced synchronization between key "social brain" regions. These interconnected neural systems can be understood through the relationship between functionally relevant anatomic areas and neurochemical pathways, the programming of which are genetically modulated during neurodevelopment and mediated through a range of epigenetic and environmental modulators. Elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms can provide an invaluable window for understanding the neural wiring that regulates higher brain functions and consequent clinical phenotypes. In keeping with the multi modal and diverse origins of ASD, this Research Topic explores the genetic underpinnings and environmental modulation in the aetiology; neural substrates, biomarkers and endophenotypes that underlie clinical characteristics; as well as neurochemical pathways and pathophysiological mechanisms that pave the way for therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, since genetically mediated deficits and consequent functional impairments involve activity-dependent synapse development that depends on postnatal learning and experience, the trajectory towards the final clinical expression could be modulated by early interventions that exploit the neuronal maturation and brain plasticity. However, identifying these diverse pathogenetic processes and tailoring interventions would require subtyping ASD into homogeneous subgroups. In this regard, this topic covers the current state of evidence in the literature through topic reviews as well as ongoing original work that provides tangible hypotheses and directions for future research.
