Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.

Book Combustion Flames and Explosions of Gases

Download or read book Combustion Flames and Explosions of Gases written by Bernard Lewis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion, Flames, and Explosions of Gases, Second Edition focuses on the processes, methodologies, and reactions involved in combustion phenomena. The publication first offers information on theoretical foundations, reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, and reaction between carbon monoxide and oxygen. Discussions focus on the fundamentals of reaction kinetics, elementary and complex reactions in gases, thermal reaction, and combined hydrogen-carbon monoxide-oxygen reaction. The text then elaborates on the reaction between hydrocarbons and oxygen and combustion waves in laminar flow. The manuscript tackles combustion waves in turbulent flow and air entrainment and burning of jets of fuel gases. Topics include effect of turbulence spectrum and turbulent wrinkling on combustion wave propagation; ignition of high-velocity streams by hot solid bodies; burners with primary air entrainment; and description of jet flames. The book then takes a look at detonation waves in gases; emission spectra, ionization, and electric-field effects in flames; and methods of flame photography and pressure recording. The publication is a valuable reference for readers interested in combustion phenomena.

Book Characterization of Kinematic Properties of Turbulent Non premixed Jet Flames Using High speed Particle Image Velocimetry

Download or read book Characterization of Kinematic Properties of Turbulent Non premixed Jet Flames Using High speed Particle Image Velocimetry written by Nakul Raj Bansal and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis utilizes time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements to provide a detailed statistical characterization of the kinematic properties from a set of standard non-premixed flames, which serve as benchmark test cases within the turbulent combustion community. The flames under consideration are the well-characterized DLR CH4/H2/N2 jet flames operating at two Reynolds numbers, DLR A (Re = 15,200) and DLR B (Re = 22,800), where DLR A represents a robust flame condition and DLR B represents a flame near blowout with high degrees of local flame extinction. A qualitative and quantitative comparison between DLR A and DLR B is presented to understand the effect of Reynolds number variations and local flame extinction on turbulence statistics. Detailed data processing techniques to analyze the time-resolved, 2D PIV data have been developed and presented in this work. Radial profiles of the mean and RMS fluctuations of the velocity are presented and results from DLR A agree with previous point-based measurements giving confidence in the measurements and analysis. While the DLR flames are highly utilized test cases, no published velocity data from the DLR B flames is available and thus the current measurements extend the existing data set available for modelers.

Book Carbon Monoxide and Turbulence Chemistry Interactions Measurements and Modeling of Turbulent Jet Diffusion Flames

Download or read book Carbon Monoxide and Turbulence Chemistry Interactions Measurements and Modeling of Turbulent Jet Diffusion Flames written by S. M. Correa and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of a fundamental understanding of turbulence-chemistry interactions remains one of the most important and challenging problems in turbulent reacting flows. This program couples laser based measurements and computer modeling of well-characterized laboratory-scale jet diffusion flames to study the effects of finite-rate chemistry and localized extinction in turbulent combustion. The long-range goal is to use this fundamental understanding for control of lean and high-altitude blow out in gas-turbine engines. The results of the first year of this program include: 1) improving the data base for CO/H2/N2 turbulent jet diffusion flames by analyzing direct measurements of CO2 concentrations from Strokes vibrational Raman intensities and by comparing two independent methods of determining temperatures from the Raman data; 2) testing of the stretched laminar flamelet concept in turbulent diffusion flames by comparison of instantaneous and conditionally averaged Raman measurements in turbulent H2 and CO/H2/N2 jet diffusion flame calculations and measurements; and 3) testing of a diffusion flame pilot for stabilization of turbulent jet flames at high Reynolds number.

Book Characterization of the Structure of Turbulent Non premixed Dimethyl Ether Jet Flames

Download or read book Characterization of the Structure of Turbulent Non premixed Dimethyl Ether Jet Flames written by Han Shen and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second set of experimental results is derived from a research collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories to compare direct numerical simulation (DNS) of a temporally-evolving jet flame with experimental measurements from a spatially-evolving jet flame operating under identical Reynolds and Damkohler numbers with significant levels of local flame extinction. Simultaneous OH/CH2O (formaldehyde) PLIF imaging is performed to characterize the spatial structure of the turbulent DME flames, where the OH PLIF imaging yields information regarding the high-temperature reactive layer structure and the CH2O PLIF imaging yields information regarding the low-temperature, partial oxidation structure. First, the structure of the flames is in qualitative agreement, displaying similar extinction and re-ignition patterns in both the DNS and the experiments. Joint OH/CH2O statistics from the DNS and the experiments are found to agree very well indicating a strong anti-correlation between OH and CH2O. As one example, an alignment index defined in terms of the OH and CH2O gradients was computed from both DNS and experimental results. For both DNS and experimental results, the probability density function (PDF) of the alignment index peaked at -1 at all time (DNS) and spatial (experiments) instances, indicating that the gradients of OH and CH2O are opposed, even under very low Damkohler number conditions. Finally, the [OH] x [CH2O] product imaging is evaluated as a surrogate for peak heat release rate and is found to be an excellent surrogate of the peak heat release rate in the DNS results. This agreed qualitatively with observed experimental results that showed that the OH and CH2O PLIF images overlapped only in very small spatial regions, presumably demarcating the regions between fuel oxidation and primary heat release. This result is consistent with the statistical results of the alignment index that indicate that the OH and CH2O gradients are opposed, i.e., as CH2O is consumed, OH is formed. The OH/CH2O product imaging which is used to predict peak hear release rate agrees with the simulation extremely well.
