Book Synthesis and Characterization of Porous Hydroxyapatite and Hydroxyapatite Coatings

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Porous Hydroxyapatite and Hydroxyapatite Coatings written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is developed to construct bulk hydroxyapatite (HAp) with different cellular structures. The technique involves the initial synthesis of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite powder from an aqueous solution using water-soluble compounds and then followed by spray drying into agglomerated granules. The granules were further cold pressed and sintered into bulks at elevated temperatures. The sintering behavior of the HAp granules was characterized and compared with those previously reported. Resulting from the fact that the starting HAp powders were extremely fine, a relatively low activation energy for sintering was obtained. In the present study, both porous and dense structures were produced by varying powder morphology and sintering parameters. Porous structures consisting of open cells were constructed. Sintered structures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray tomography. In the present paper, hydroxyapatite coatings produced by magnetron sputtering on silicon and titanium substrates will also be presented. The mechanical properties of the coatings were measured using nanoindentation techniques and microstructures examined using transmission electron microscopy.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of this study is to reinforce hydroxyapatite with native starch originated from Sarawak, Malaysia. The type of the rice starches used are Balik Wangi rice, Bubuk Wangi rice, and Bario rice. Solvent casting and particulate leaching is used as the method to fabricate the bone tissue scaffold. Here, sodium chloride (NaCl) is chosen as the porogen agent to create pores in the scaffold. A series of characterizations were performed which include the dielectric measurement is performed to quantify the dielectric value of the scaffold and this will be used later to measure the porosity indirectly. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) is used to observe the morphology and to measure the pores size. The mechanical testing (compression) was done to obtain the young’s modulus of the scaffolds. The Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is to get the information about the group interactions between hydroxyapatite (HA) and starch. Last but not least, X-Ray Diffraction is to observe the crystallinity structure of the scaffolds.

Book Development of Porous Alumina hydroxyapatite Composites Using Protein Foaming consolidation Method for Biomedical Applications

Download or read book Development of Porous Alumina hydroxyapatite Composites Using Protein Foaming consolidation Method for Biomedical Applications written by Ahmad Fadli and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Porous alumina ceramics have been attracting considerable attention for cell loading and bone grafts. Although porous alumina provides relatively high mechanical properties in respect to bioactive porous ceramics, the bioinertness of alumina hamper its application for permanent bone implant. On the other hand, the use of hydroxyapatite (HA) for bone surgery is highly successful due to its biocompatibility, bioactivity and osteoconduction characteristics. The major goal in the present work was to develop a porous alumina-HA composite for biomedical applications. This approach aims to combine the high mechanical strength of the alumina with the biocompatibility of HA ceramics. The alumina-HA porous bodies were fabricated via protein-foaming consolidation method using egg yolk as the pore creating agent. The strategy allows the control of porosity not only by the slurry composition but also by managing the foaming process. Commercial HA, sol-gel derived HA and commercial alumina powders were mixed with yolk and starch as well as darvan 821A at an adjusted ratio. The resulting slip was poured into cylindrical shaped molds and followed by foaming and consolidation via 180°C drying for 1 hour. The obtained green bodies were burned at 600° for 1 hour, followed by sintering at various temperatures (1200-1550°C). The slurry drying at high temperatures resulted in high foaming capacity and bigger pore sizes as well as privileged pore generation. The increasing yolk and dispersant concentrations in slurries transmitted the rheological conditions from pseudoplastic behavior to Newtonian fluid. Porous alumina-HA bodies with shrinkage in the range of 26-77 vol.% and porosity of 46-52% as well as compressive strength of 0.1 - 6.4 MPa were obtained. The compressive strength of porous alumina-HA bodies increased with increasing sintering temperatures. The addition of commercial HA in the body was found to increase the compressive strength, whereas the case is reversed for the addition of sol-gel HA. FESEM analysis of cultured cells showed a good compatibility of the Vero cells to the porous microcarriers, since the cells were obviously attached at the surface of microcarriers at 8 - 120 cultured hours. The cell growth of porous alumina microcarrier was 0.015 h-1 and increased to 0.019 h-1 for 0.3 w/w HA-to-alumina mass ratio and decreased again to 0.017 h-1 for 1.0 w/w ratio. Carbon concentrations on porous alumina bodies without HA addition was 36.03%; it significantly increased 46.14% when 1.0 w/w HA was added.

Book Bio inspired Tailored Hydroxyapatite based Powder Composites for Dental Applications

Download or read book Bio inspired Tailored Hydroxyapatite based Powder Composites for Dental Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study includes two interconnected parts. The first part describes the characterization of the natural materials including the teeth of predator and preys' aspects and Arapaima gigas scale. Based on the first part, several special features presented in the natural materials were investigated. In the second part, the special procedures of the fabrication of tailored hydroxyapatite (HAP) based composites by the novel consolidation technique of spark plasma sintering are developed. These procedures are bio-inspired by the findings of the first part of the study. A natural tooth is composed of the external layer, hard enamel which has high degree of mineralization and the internal region - tough dentin which has collagen fibrils and carbonated apatite mineral. The main feature in the dentin is the tubule structure. Arapaima gigas scales serve as armor-like materials to protect Arapaima gigas from being bitten by piranha. The scales have a laminate structure with the hard external layer and soft internal layers. Besides the hydroxyapatite mineral, the main building block of the scale is collagen fibers. The structure of teeth and scale were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The chemical compound was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Mechanical tests (microindentation, nanoindentation, tensile and compression tests) were performed to investigate the mechanical properties of those biological materials. The penetration test of piranha teeth on the arapaima scale was conducted to prove that the scale is stronger than the piranha tooth. In order to fabricate artificial dental materials inspired by the investigated structure of the natural teeth, spark plasma sintering involving high heating rates, shorter sintering times and low sintering temperatures was utilized to fabricate hydroxyapatite composites. Hydroxyapatite is widely used in biomedical applications, but its low mechanical strength limits its applications in heavy loaded implants. Carbon nanotube (CNT) - HAP composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering and indicated that the addition of CNT can improve the mechanical strength of pure HAP. Unaxial freeze drying process was utilized to create a micro channel structure in the hydroxyapatite components. To maintain the porous structure of the tailored hydroxyapatite green specimens, a newly developed sintering process, Free Pressureless Spark Plasma Sintering(FPSPS), was used to consolidate the tailored hydroxyapatite without applying pressure. The comparison of the outcome of the treatment of hydroxyapatite components by conventional sintering and free pressureless spark plasma sintering was conducted showing that FPSPS can provide a better approach to consolidate the material with higher micro hardness.
