Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information is drawn from the literature and the professional opinions of behaviorists and habitat use experts, and used to describe requirements of whooping cranes (Grus americana) during migration. Migration strategies of North American cranes are compared and inferences drawn. The requirements for usable food and cover are examined and described quantitatively for evaluations that focus on roosting habitat. When possible, information is presented in terms of both traditional and nontraditional stopover areas. Perceived problems with the data and their interpretation, are discussed, and issues requiring further study are identified. Relations presented do not represent selection, as defined by use and availability studies, but rather should be interpreted as a formalized synthesis of information directed by the opinions of recognized authorities in crane biology. Site-specific evaluation criteria address issues of visibility, water depth, wetland size, and disturbance; suitability relations are presented for each habitat component. Horizontal visibility is defined as a straight-line distance to the nearest obstruction greater than 1 m in height, and that distance must be greater than 20 m before a site can be considered as potential habitat. Optimum water depth is considered to be less than or equal to 30 cm. The minimum wetland size considered usable for roosting is 0.04 ha. Disturbances are treated as zones of influence around selected features with no zone having a minimum width of less than 100 m. Broad-scale evaluations can employ information readily available from inventories or surveys such as wetland system, class, water regime, and size, to rapidly screen potential habitat suitability over large geographic areas. Suggestions for application of evaluation criteria are presented.

Book Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River

Download or read book Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-02-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tension between wildlife protection under the Endangered Species Act and water management in the Platte River Basin has existed for more than 25 years. The Platte River provides important habitat for migratory and breeding birds, including three endangered or threatened species: the whooping crane, the northern Great Plains population of the piping plover, and the interior least tern. The leading factors attributed to the decline of the cranes are historical overhunting and widespread habitat destruction and, for the plovers and terns, human interference during nesting and the loss of riverine nesting sites in open sandy areas that have been replaced with woodlands, sand and gravel mines, housing, and roadways. Extensive damming has disrupted passage of the endangered pallid sturgeon and resulted in less suitable habitat conditions such as cooler stream flows, less turbid waters, and inconsistent flow regimes. Commercial harvesting, now illegal, also contributed to the decline of the sturgeon. Endangered and Threatened Species of the Platte River addresses the habitat requirements for these federally protected species. The book further examines the scientific aspects of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's instream-flow recommendations and habitat suitability guidelines and assesses the science concerning the connections among the physical systems of the river as they relate to species' habitats.

Book Threat to the Whooping Crane

Download or read book Threat to the Whooping Crane written by Susan Sales Harkins and published by Mitchell Lane Publishers, Inc.. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn all about the tall, noisy whooping crane—see it dance, follow its flight path, and watch the stages as a chick hatches and grows into a cinnamon-colored juvenile and then into a stunning white bird with black wing tips and a red head. Why is this bird endangered? Devastating loss of habitat and overhunting of eggs and of adults for their skin in the 1800s made their numbers dwindle. By 1942, there were only sixteen whoopers still living in the wild. Now the whooping crane is making a comeback. In 2007, over 300 whooping cranes were migrating between Canada and Texas. Find out what scientists are doing—and what you can do—to help this endangered animal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The whooping crane is one of North America’s rarest (and tallest) birds. Human activity once left less than 20 whoopers alive. Scientists and nature groups now work to save the species. Whooping Cranes draws on up-to-date science. Stories and next level facts explain the bird’s life and diet. The book also details the ways people help—and harm—the species. This book in the Animals in Danger series takes readers inside the whooping crane’s world. Clear text and beautiful images provide what you need to know. Added features like maps and a glossary round out your knowledge.

Book excerpt: Leki is a young whooping crane who has no idea that a spectacular journey is about to begin. He lives with his parents, Toluki and Karla, in the Northwest Territories of Canada. Leki has had many adventures there, like the day he ran across wild wolves! Still, his biggest adventure is yet to come as his parents prepare for their annual October migration. Every year, the whooping cranes travel south to warmer climates for the winter. Toluki and Karla plan to take young Leki 2,400 miles, all the way from their home in Canada to a winter resting place on an island in the Gulf of Mexico. The path they take is called "the crane track," and it is a journey filled with wild weather and hungry hunters. Whooping cranes are graceful creatures with white feathers and up to an eight-foot wingspan. Once almost extinct, there are now 513 whooping cranes in the world, and many of them travel the same path as Leki and his parents. Nature is a carefully balanced, beautiful machine. It's up to us to protect the path of the cranes' migratory journey. So is little Leki up for the trip? Gene Steffen is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot. Post military, in the course of his job as aviation manager for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Steffen flew a plane tracking a family of whooping cranes during their annual migration. He provided this assistance to the National Geographic Society in the filming of a special entitled Flight of the Whooping Crane. Over his lifetime of flying, Steffen has flown over eleven thousand hours in the sky in ninety-eight different planes.

Book Proposed Reintroduction of a Migratory Flock of Whooping Cranes in the Eastern United States

Download or read book Proposed Reintroduction of a Migratory Flock of Whooping Cranes in the Eastern United States written by U.s. Fish and Wildlife Service and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This environmental assessment considers the biological, environmental, and socioeconomic effects of a proposal to establish a self-sustaining population of whooping cranes (Grus americana) separate from the two existing populations. This action has been recommended by the Whooping Crane Recovery Team to contribute to the long-term recovery of the endangered whooping crane. Alternatives considered in this environmental assessment include: (1) No Action; (2) establish a nonessential experimental migratory population of whooping cranes in the eastern United States with introduction of cranes to Wisconsin and migration to a wintering site at Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Florida (Preferred Alternative); (3) establish a migratory population of whooping cranes, classified as endangered, in the same locations; (4) establish a nonessential experimental migratory population of whooping cranes with initial reintroduction to Seney National Wildlife Refuge in Michigan and migration to a wintering site at Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in Florida. Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 of the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service are cooperating in this endeavor.
