Book Characterization of Fouling of Tertiary Membranes Treating Secondary Effluent of Domestic Wastewater

Download or read book Characterization of Fouling of Tertiary Membranes Treating Secondary Effluent of Domestic Wastewater written by Sara Abu-Obaid and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of membranes for tertiary treatment of wastewater has become more frequent over the years, especially with increasing interest in water reuse. Fouling prevents wider application of this technology as it creates operational challenges and increases costs. In tertiary applications, membrane feedwater can be variable in composition as this depends on the operating conditions of the implemented upstream biological treatment process. The tertiary membranes at the Keswick WPCP have demonstrated increased fouling in the spring season. Early spring marks the period that corresponds to low wastewater temperatures and elevated flows. This study sought to identify critical operating conditions leading to seasonal fluctuations in fouling of full-scale tertiary membranes. This was done through conducting a detailed historical review of membrane operational parameters for the year of 2016 and 2017. In addition, changes in potential foulants during high fouling periods were examined to obtain an improved understanding of the foulant characteristics. This was done through a sampling campaign that spanned multiple seasons of operation aiming to characterize feedwater quality during extreme operational conditions. The analysis of historical data revealed a relationship between membrane fouling and water temperature and flow, which was more than could be explained by changes in water viscosity with temperature. However, it was observed that the membrane fouling behavior significantly differed between the two year-long observation periods, with a peak in fouling indexes during March and April for 2016, and inconsistent fluctuations in fouling indexes between January and May for 2017. The differing patterns suggested a complex dependence of fouling on the operating conditions. Therefore, it was concluded that fouling depends on water temperature and flow, however, it was not possible to delineate the contributions of the individual variables as they were found to be highly correlated. The examination of feedwater characteristics data revealed that high membrane fouling rates correlated to an increase in biopolymer concentration of total DOC. The increase in biopolymer concentration was also correlated to a decrease in water temperature and increase in flow. However, no relationship was observed between TOC/DOC concentrations and temperature and flow. This could indicate that fouling of tertiary membranes due to seasonal variation in operational conditions is a result of alterations to the composition of organics in membrane feed, not the overall concentration of TOC/DOC. The examination of field data also revealed an increase in CST values during high fouling events. The increase in CST values correlated to the decrease in water temperature and increase in flow. Elevated CST values, which indicate worsened dewaterability of sludge, also correlated to higher biopolymer concentrations. Therefore, it was concluded that seasonal variations may result in the increased release of EPS by microorganisms. This leads to higher membrane fouling and worsened dewaterability of upstream sludge. The results of this study enhance the knowledge of fouling behaviour and foulant characteristics for tertiary membranes operating under stressed conditions. This knowledge will be of value when designing mitigation strategies to reduce the costs of these types of systems.

Book Fouling of Low Pressure Membranes by Municipal Wastewater

Download or read book Fouling of Low Pressure Membranes by Municipal Wastewater written by Claudia Laabs and published by Logos Verlag Berlin. This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes have a wide range of applications in the wastewater industry: they are used to polish wastewater treatment plant effluents or are directly integrated in the biological treatment process in the form of membrane bio-reactors (MBR). The major challenge of low-pressure membrane filtration remains the fouling of the membranes by organic matter which prevents an efficient operation by reducing the overall transmembrane flux and/or increasing the transmembrane pressure over time. This research investigates the fouling potential of municipal wastewater in low-pressure membrane filtration. Using bench-scale stirred cell experiments the principal organic foulants and the underlying fouling mechanisms are identified. Additionally, two MBR pilot plants are monitored over the course of one year in order to detect possible correlations between the feed water characteristics, operational parameters, and membrane fouling.

Download or read book Water Reuse written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expanding water reuse-the use of treated wastewater for beneficial purposes including irrigation, industrial uses, and drinking water augmentation-could significantly increase the nation's total available water resources. Water Reuse presents a portfolio of treatment options available to mitigate water quality issues in reclaimed water along with new analysis suggesting that the risk of exposure to certain microbial and chemical contaminants from drinking reclaimed water does not appear to be any higher than the risk experienced in at least some current drinking water treatment systems, and may be orders of magnitude lower. This report recommends adjustments to the federal regulatory framework that could enhance public health protection for both planned and unplanned (or de facto) reuse and increase public confidence in water reuse.

Book Industrial Wastewater Reuse

Download or read book Industrial Wastewater Reuse written by Maulin P. Shah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book identifies emerging technologies that allow the reuse and regeneration of industrial wastewater with innovative and applied approaches throughout the wastewater treatment cycle. Today, it is increasingly clear that treated urban wastewater, whose reuse has become an important component of long-term water management worldwide, is a key source of chemical pollutants and emerging biological concerns. Current water-quality guidelines for reclaimed wastewater predominantly address the risks associated with the presence of microbial organisms and chemical parameters such as biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, E. coli and worms, and in some cases heavy metals; however, they are insufficient for the full evaluation of risks. The global growth of population is concentrated in urban areas; therefore, most of the challenges and solutions related to wastewater reside in urban treatment plants. Unless wastewater management and wastewater governance processes are significantly improved within a decade, it is likely that our societies will face severe and prolonged water insecurity and urban floods. The application of sustainable technologies can eliminate or minimize micro-contaminants in wastewater. Several organizations focus on the potential impacts to humans and their environments by wastewater reuse. This book gathers new research and reviews work from researchers and scientists to identify the main barriers and limitations that will need to be overcome, so that wastewater reuse strategies gain more momentum and will be adopted more efficiently worldwide. The book is designed for engineers, scientists, and other professionals who are seeking an excellent introduction to and basic knowledge of the principles of environmental bioremediation technologies.
