Book excerpt: We have developed a double pulse stand-off laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) system capable of detecting explosive residues as far as 50 m. As described in an earlier report (ARL-TR-4240), the use of a double pulse laser improves the sensitivity and selectivity of LIBS for the detection of energetic materials. This report discusses the extension of these studies to stand-off distances. The efficacy of chemometric techniques such as linear correlation, principal components analysis, and partial least squares discriminant analysis for the identification of explosive residues is also discussed. We have shown that despite the typical characterization of LIBS as an elemental technique, the relative elemental intensities in the LIBS spectra are representative of the stoichiometry of the parent molecules and can be used to discriminate materials containing the same elements.

The plasma is formed when the laser power density exceeds the breakdown threshold value of the surface. The plasma can be used in sampling but is proposed as a source for atomic emission spectrometry (AES). In this case the technique is referred to as laser induced breakdown (emission) spectrometry (LIBS). The spectrally and temporally resolved detection and subsequent determination of the specific atomic emission reveals analytical information about the elemental composition of the sample, including solids, liquids and gases. This book is devoted to the analytical technique of laser-induced breakdown spectrometry. Book excerpt: Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a powerful tool for performing chemical analysis measurements of materials, such as slurries, soils, plastics and powder samples. The LIBS technique has proven to be sensitive, selective and robust for rapid, in situ analysis. The focus of this dissertation is the optimization of laser spectroscopic sensing methodologies for material characterization. The applications of the LIBS technique to slurry samples is very challenging due to the water content (~80%). A new sample preparation method called "spin-on-glass" was adopted to reduce the water content in slurry samples and improve the LIBS signal. The feasibility of using the new sampling method with a LIBS system was tested by applying multivariate analysis to the LIBS spectral data. The calibration results demonstrated that the LIBS technique with the new sampling method could successfully predict the elemental concentrations of slurry samples qualitatively and quantitatively. The possibility of developing a LIBS-based sensor system for total carbon quantification in soil samples was studied. The soil samples were studied in pellet form and the calibration models were developed by using simple linear regression (SLR) and multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis. It was found that both SLR- and MLR-based calibrations successfully predicted the carbon concentration in an unknown sample with relative accuracy (RA) within 8%. The LIBS experimental setup was designed, developed and tested for the determination of elemental impurities in plastic calibration standards that are used in dual-energy computed tomography (CT) scanning for petrophysical applications. Univariate calibration (UC) and multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis were used to develop calibration models. From this study, it was concluded that MLR improved the calibration results and data derived from the LIBS analysis enhanced the predictive capabilities of dual-energy CT scanning in general. A comparative study was performed for quantification of strontium (Sr) in an aluminum (Al) batch with both the atomic and molecular LIBS emissions. The calibration models were developed using SLR analysis and the limits of detection (LOD) were obtained. The study confirmed that molecular LIBS could be used for quantification of Sr in a binary mixture.

Book excerpt: Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been established as a rapid, in situ, and real-time spectroscopic analytical technique for material characterization. It is very handy for the study of all kinds of materials irrespective of their state. After being used for a Mars mission, LIBS has gained global attention and many scientific researches are investigating its applications. The main objective of this dissertation is to study the possibility of using laser spectroscopic sensing techniques for material characterization and if possible, to develop methodologies. Studying molecular emission spectra for elemental analysis is a relatively new trend in the spectroscopic field. Molecular emission from SrCl and SrO observed in LIBS spectra were analyzed and compared with atomic emission from Sr. Calibration models were developed using both molecular bands and atomic spectral peaks. The determination of nutritional elements in crops, vegetables, and fruits is very important to evaluate their nutritional status. The LIBS technique was applied to identify the nutritional elements present in cauliflower and broccoli, and to evaluate the difference between organic and conventional vegetables in terms of nutritional elements. Principal component analysis (PCA) and one-to-one comparison using Student's t-test were employed for discrimination between organic and conventional vegetable flowers. Early iron and steel production in the state of Pennsylvania (United States) mostly utilized blast furnaces that were operated by charcoal as a primary fuel, followed by anthracite, then coke. The process left behind a by-product known as blast furnace slag. Blast furnace slag, non-metallic in nature, appears to have various industrial applications. LIBS was used for the analysis of charcoal blast furnace slags and qualitative as well as quantitative analyses were demonstrated. To evaluate the possibility of using the LIBS technique to detect and quantify rare earth elements, three consecutive studies were executed. Firstly, pure oxides of six rare earth elements were studied and then real samples directly taken from natural ores were analyzed. In the third step, two rare earth elements (Eu and Yb) in aqueous solutions were studied by underwater LIBS and the pressure effect on the plasma emission is discussed.
