Book Fabrication and Characterization of Barium Titanate Thin Film on Polycrystalline Nickel Substrate

Download or read book Fabrication and Characterization of Barium Titanate Thin Film on Polycrystalline Nickel Substrate written by Parisa Sahebi and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ferroelectric BaTiO3 (BTO) thin films were deposited on polycrystalline nickel disks and silicon wafer substrates by rf magnetron sputtering. Nickel oxide (NiO) and nanocrystalline nickel (nc-Ni) layers were used as interfacial buffer layers. Microstructural studies with X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal that the BTO films deposited at temperatures lower than 700°C have an amorphous structure. However, the BTO films sputtered at temperatures higher than 700°C are partially crystalline. BTO films have a good and continuous interface with both interfacial layers with no interdiffusion or reaction with the substrates. In the case of BTO deposition with nc-Ni interlayer at higher deposition temperature of 800°C, a thin NiO layer forms between the nc-Ni and BTO films. Having nc-Ni as an interfacial layer enhances surface morphology and decreases surface roughness. This study shows that nc-Ni can act as a proper interfacial layer between a ceramic like BTO and the metallic substrates and is a better alternative for NiO buffer layer.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Batio3 Pellets and Thin Films

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Batio3 Pellets and Thin Films written by Meor Ahmad Faris Meor Ahmad Tajudin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barium titanate was synthesized using a solid state approach and an aqueous method. Solid state syntheses were used to prepare barium titanate pellets using a powder metallurgy method. Appropriate amounts of barium carbonate and titanium dioxide powder were mixed together in an agate mortar. Barium titanate pellets were mixed according to 5 different ratios of Ba/Ti which are 1:0.9, 1:0.95, 1:1, 1:1.05, 1:1.1. Pellets were sintered in air at a temperature 1400 °C. Barium titanate thin films were prepared using an aqueous method. Sol-gel of barium titanate was prepared according to the similar ratios as pellets. Thin films of barium titanate sol-gel were deposited using a desktop printer onto a glass substrate and fired at 400 °C. Both pellets and thin films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, Atomic Force Microscope (thin films only), and impedance spectroscopy. This thesis focuses on determination of dielectric properties of barium titanate including the resistance, capacitance, dielectric constant, relaxation frequency, and loss tangent. The highest density for the barium titanate pellets were 5.90 g/cm3 when a Ba:Ti ratio of 1:1 was used. The average thicknesses of the thin films were 2.89 nm as measured using the atomic force microscope and verified using the scanning electron microscope. Characteristic of barium titanate were observed under various temperatures starting from room temperature up to 450 °C (for pellets) and 300 °C (for thin films). The measured dielectric constant of the pellets at 10 kHz (at room temperature) varied from a maximum of 2810 to a minimum of 1375.

Book Synthesis and Properties of Barium Titanate Solid Solution Thin Films on Copper Substrates

Download or read book Synthesis and Properties of Barium Titanate Solid Solution Thin Films on Copper Substrates written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barium titanate thin films were deposited via chemical solution deposition using a hybrid-chelate chemistry directly on copper foil substrates. A process was developed to crystallize and densify the ferroelectric films at 900C by using a reductive atmosphere containing nitrogen, hydrogen, water vapor, and oxygen impurities such that film constituents were oxidized to form barium titanate and the foil substrate remained metallic. The crystallized films are polycrystalline with equiaxed morphology and average grain diameters in excess of 100 nm. The dielectric properties exhibit permittivities in excess of 1800 at room temperature and zero bias with tunabilites of greater than 90% and high field loss tangents of less than 1%. A series of samples was prepared with varying grain and crystallite sizes by dividing and processing a single film over a range of temperature from 700 to 900C. This ensures that the chemical composition and film thickness is invariant for each sample. It is shown that the grain size increases with higher process temperatures and results in a concomitant increase in permittivity and tunability. These enhancements, combined with the constant paraelectricD erroelectric phase transition temperature, indicated that a combination of film crystallinity and grain size is responsible for diminished performance. The phase transition temperature and temperature coefficient of capacitance modified by partially substituting zirconium, hafnium, and tin for titanium. The resulting films were single phase and the phase transition shifts were consistent with bulk materials. A reduction in permittivity was observed for increasing substituent level and was attributed to a reduction in grain size for both barium titanate zirconate and barium titanate hafnate. Processing conditions were chosen to stabilize Sn2+ during the firing process in an attempt to flux the system and increase grain size. The barium titanate stannate films had less reduction in grain size.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Optical Properties of Barium Titanate Films Sputtered Under Various Conditions

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Optical Properties of Barium Titanate Films Sputtered Under Various Conditions written by John C. Olson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data is presented on BaTiO3 films which were rf sputtered on Pt, quartz and sapphire substrates at various temperatures and gas mixtures. Measurements of density, dielectric constant, electrical conductivity, X-ray diffraction, energy band gap from optical absorption and wavelength, and temperature dependence of refractive index are presented. Measurements were also made on a BaTiO3 single crystal and a hot-pressed ceramic pellet for direct comparison of bulk properties to those of the films. The results of this work demonstrate that a transition of the properties occurs between the amorphous and crystalline states depending on the surface temperature during sputtering. The transition is sluggish up to 700 C above which crystalline properties of the films appear rapidly. (Author).

Book Chemical Characterisation Of The Surfaces And Interfaces Of Barium Titanate And Related Electronic Ceramics

Download or read book Chemical Characterisation Of The Surfaces And Interfaces Of Barium Titanate And Related Electronic Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis deals with the investigations on the atomic composition, chemical surface states and microstructural features of barium titanate and other electronic ceramics namely barium polytitantes, calcium manganites and magnesium calcium titanate by surface analytical techniques. After presenting a brief introduction on the ceramic materials studied in terms of their crystal structures, electrical properties, nonstoichiometry and interfacial characteristics, the thesis describes the synthesis of the ceramics and the methodology of the different surface analytical techniques utilized such as backscattering spectrometry (BS), an ion beam analysis (IBA) technique, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The XPS investigations on the chemical surface states of polycrystalline barium titanate having well-defined electrical characteristics reveal the prevalence of Ba in two distinct chemical environments : the one corresponding to the lower binding energy is related to the dielectric while the other having higher binding energy is correlated to semiconducting properties of the ceramics. Processes such as abrasion or polishing make the surfaces more reactive and susceptible to atmospheric contamination. Sputter cleaning causes surface modification leading to changes in the Ba (3d) and Ti (2p) spectra. Studies on the surface atomic composition by BS and microstructural features of doped barium titanate ceramics reveal their interfacial characteristics in terms segregation of dopants or metal ion constituents. Surfaces of these ceramics exhibit cationic as well as anionic nonstoichiometry depending on the processing steps involved. Ceramics synthesized by oxalate precursor route are Ti-rich while those prepared by gel-to-crystallite method are Ba-rich. These are correlated to the chemical processes and background impurities which in turn control the microstructures. Barium titanate substitued with> 1 at. % Mn are deficient in.

Book Characterization of Barium Titanate and Strontium Titanate Nanoparticles Synthesized by Hydrothermal and Molten Salt Methods

Download or read book Characterization of Barium Titanate and Strontium Titanate Nanoparticles Synthesized by Hydrothermal and Molten Salt Methods written by Jin Zhou and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis mainly focused on investigating the suitable synthesis methods to get barium titanate (BaTiO3) and strontium titanate (SrTiO3) nanocubes without using any capping agents. Two synthesis methods (hydrothermal and molten-salt) were used to synthesize BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to identify phases and determine the phase purity of synthesized BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanoparticles. The morphology and formation mechanisms were investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was verified that BaTiO3 nanocubes can be successfully synthesized by molten-salt method, while SrTiO3 nanocubes were obtained by hydrothermal method. The synthesized nanocubes for both materials have high crystallinity and high purity. The formation mechanism of BaTiO3 nanocubes was proposed due to the low surface energy of {100} crystal planes. Crystal planes with low surface energy are preferred in the crystal growth stage. The formation of SrTiO3 nanocubes was proposed due to the crystal growth of {100} crystal planes and face-to-face attachment. These mechanisms provided clear explanations for the formation of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanocubes without using any capping agents, which can be applied to other metal oxide nanocubes. Future studies can be focused on the synthesis of other metal oxide nanocubes by using the formation mechanisms proposed in this thesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant electrical resistance change due to gas and humidity absorbtion on metal oxide semiconductor surface has been known for long. Pure BaTiO3, which is an insulator at room temperature, could be made semiconductor by incorporation of low amount of donor ion oxides. The aim of the present study is to fabricate BaTiO3 with desired properties by investigating relationship between defect chemistry and characteristics. BaTiO3 based bulk ceramics were produced enhancing the porosity percentage by addition of different amounts of graphite and PMMA powders into La+3 doped BaTiO3 ceramics. For electrical conductivity measurements, to provide humidity environment, evaporation apparatus and gas-tight humidity chamber were used. By using apparatus, electrical resistance measurements under humid environment were carried out on samples with all compositions. For relative humidity percentages between 0-100%, for each humidity percentage an electrical resistance value was read. Special attention was paid for proton conductivity and applications for humidity sensing.
