Book Characterization of Bacteria Dental Materials Interactions

Download or read book Characterization of Bacteria Dental Materials Interactions written by Reynaldo Brito and published by American Medical Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bacteria are a complex group of living microorganisms. They can be broadly classified on the basis of shape into different types such as cocci (spherical bacteria), bacilli (rod-shaped bacteria), and spirilla (spiral bacteria). The bacterial adhesion to a surface is a multi-step process through which single bacterial cells initially attach to the biomaterial followed by creation of biofilm, which is the primary cause of bacteria-related infections. Resin, composites, titanium alloys, and zirconia are some of the major dental biomaterials. An understanding of the interactions of the bacteria with the biomaterials is necessary for the growth of surgical intervention strategies. These strategies might be helpful in decreasing BCBIs and coatings which have the ability to prevent bacterial adhesion to biomaterials. This book unravels the recent studies on the interactions between bacteria and dental materials. It covers in detail some existent and innovative concepts revolving around the characterization of these interactions. This book will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.

Book Analysis and Management of Plaques on Intraoral Artificial Dental Materials

Download or read book Analysis and Management of Plaques on Intraoral Artificial Dental Materials written by Tingxi Wu and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oral cavity contains diverse microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. These microbes are able to colonize on natural surfaces, including tooth and mucosa, as well as artificial surfaces, such as surfaces of denture, implants, and orthodontic braces. The microbial colonization and formation of biofilms on these biotic and abiotic surfaces may lead to local and systemic diseases such as caries, white spot lesion, gingivitis, halitosis, and denture stomatitis. However, microbial study related to intraoral artificial surfaces has drawn little attention in comparison to microbial study on natural oral surfaces. While I learned my microbiology and molecular biology experimental skills through studying a dental caries related pathogen, Streptococcus mutans, my mian research projects have been focusing on studying plaque on the artificial surfaces and their associations with dental diseases with denture and orthodontic brackets as model systems. In order to study the mechanisms behind these artificial surface plaque associated oral infectious diseases, one would need to first characterize microbial compostion of these plaques as well as establish effective study models, then study the dynamic interactions between different pathogenic species within these plaques. Through understanding the molecular components involved in plaque formation and inter-species interactions, we may develop the tools to manage these diseases. My thesis consists of three parts: Part I describes my initial work of learning microbiology and molecular biology technologies to discover and characterize a novel membrane associated protein (PrsA) in the major cariogenic pathogen, Streptococcus mutans, which is important for cellular aggregation and biofilm formation. In Part II, I applied the molecular biology tools to address clinic relevant issues with a focus on denture related oral microbial diseases, including characterization of the denture associated oral microbiome under healthy and diseased conditions and investigation of the molecular mechanism behind the potential pathogens associated with denture-associated microbial diseases. Part III covers my ongoing studies on orthodontic related oral microbial diseases after I joined orthodontic residency program. In this part, we established a clinical-relevant high-thoughput screening assay to discover compounds that could block orthodontic bracket induced plaque formation, then formulate these biofilm-inhibitory compounds into a toothpaste for the prevention of bracket-induced plaque formation. The clinical efficacy of the toothpaste is being tested now. I also have another ongoing project to characterize the dynamic change of oral microbiomes in orthodontic patients before, during, after orthodontic treatments.

Book Oral Biofilms and Modern Dental Materials

Download or read book Oral Biofilms and Modern Dental Materials written by Andrei Cristian Ionescu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date perspective on oral biofilms and dental materials, equipping readers with a sound understanding of their mutual interactions. Experts from across the world comprehensively describe the main strategies that can be followed when designing modern bioactive and biomimetic dental materials, bearing in mind the goal of reducing the occurrence of pathological conditions such as secondary caries and peri-implantitis. The background to the book is the rapid expansion in the use of nanotechnologies and modern techniques to achieve levels of performance of dental materials that were unthinkable even a few years ago. Whereas conventionally dental materials have been regarded as inert, an important paradigm shift is underway: now, these materials are being conceived as bioactive and biomimetic. Modern dental materials can produce a response by interacting positively both with the host and with the biofilm permanently colonizing hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity. These materials increasingly mimic the behavior of the tissues that they are replacing. In documenting the latest knowledge in the field, this book will be of value for both scientists in the fields of nanotechnology, biofilms and dental materials and interested clinicians.

Book Dental Composite Properties Evaluation

Download or read book Dental Composite Properties Evaluation written by Hazem Abouelleil Sayed and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific literature reveals that in vitro results are poorly correlated to materials clinical behavior. ISO standardized testing provides valuable information about the dental materials properties, and enables result comparison between different institutes. Conversely, new materials chemistry and formulations requires improved methodology and testing methods. Throughout our studies included in this work, the main objective was to reach a more global knowledge of the way dental materials are evaluated before being inserted into the oral cavity. A great deal of emphasis was given to the choice of materials to be tested, and that it would represent the current trends in dental practice and the latest developments in material composition. Equal highlight was given to the choice of testing methodology and laboratory testing techniques and their correlation to the clinical outcome. The modifications made to the methodology of these tests explored further the concealed aspects of different parameter interactions. Dental materials characterization and assessment required more understanding about the interaction between different properties to explain material aging; our work was to combine numerous studies to answer this topic. The studies included mechanical and physical properties, bulk and fiber composite, CAD CAM block materials, dental resin adhesive, thermal shock and thermal cycling, Bisphenol A. The final objective was to develop an oral simulator that would enable the reproduction of different chemical, physical and mechanical parameters of the oral environment, thus permitting to bridge the gap between in vitro and in vivo testing of dental materials.
