Download or read book Characterization of Advanced Solid Rocket Nozzle Materials written by Jay G. Baetz and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program is presented for the characterization of advanced carbon-carbon and pyrolytic graphite materials for solid rocket nozzle application. The various elements of the program are examined, and techniques for measuring individual elements are discussed. Particular attention is directed toward several unique techniques that have been developed especially for this program. Data are presented that show the relationship of material properties and microstructual characteristics to fabrication processing conditions. The use of key properties characterization to fingerprint carbon-carbon and pyrolytic graphite materials within their generic families is postulated. (Author).

Book Advances in Solid Rocket Nozzle Design and Analysis Technology in the United States Since 1970

Download or read book Advances in Solid Rocket Nozzle Design and Analysis Technology in the United States Since 1970 written by Joseph H. Hildreth and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design approaches for solid rocket nozzles and the analytical methods used to develop these designs have changed substantially during the past decade. Although nozzle designs have tended to become somewhat more simplified, the demands that the design requirements place on the new nozzle designs force the use of greater analytical complexity. Nozzle designs have progressed toward minimizing the number of parts and reducing the surface erosion as much as possible. The most significant changes have been the incorporation of 3 directional carbon-carbon throats for space and air launch nozzle types, and use of the 2D carbon-carbon involute exit cone in space nozzle designs. The continuing trend for the design of nozzles is to incorporate higher performance materials by part replacement without substantially altering the configuration. The most significant improvement in the analytical techniques is the capacity to effectively model the behavior of the involute exit cone. The current trend in nozzle analysis is to make wider use of nonlinear and 3 dimensional analytical techniques. The work which most needs to be done to improve the nozzle design capabilities is in the area of material technology. We must understand the influences of changes in the raw materials and manufacturing processes on the ultimate performance of the nozzle part.

This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes results from the nozzle thermal analysis contract which has been performed to support NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center in the development of the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM). The emphasis of this study has been directed to four potential problem areas of the nozzle. These areas are the submerged nozzle region containing the flex seal, the nozzle entrance region, the material interface region in the nozzle exit cone, and the aft region of the exit cone. This study was limited throughout by inadequate material response models, especially for the polyisoprene flex seal and the low density carbon phenolic used in the exit cone. Thermal response and particle erosion calculations were performed for each of the potential problem areas. Results from these studies showed excessive erosion (large negative safety margins) to occur in the flex seal and nozzle entrance regions. The exit cone was found to be marginally adequate (near zero safety margins) and the material interface region was found not to be a problem. Book Evaluation of Low cost Materials and Manufacturing Processes for Large Solid Rocket Nozzles Analysis of Performance Nozzle Number 4

Download or read book Evaluation of Low cost Materials and Manufacturing Processes for Large Solid Rocket Nozzles Analysis of Performance Nozzle Number 4 written by J. J. Warga and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth in a series of reports describing the results of static test firings conducted to verify the performance of ablative nozzle components fabricated from low-cost materials and/or low-cost manufacturing processes. The throat insert of this nozzle assembly exhibited extreme spallation. This was attributed to the lower-than-normal density and higher-than-normal residual volatile content of the cured component. A preliminary cost/performance analysis, based on material cost only, confirmed the economy resulting from the use of asbestos composites. Transient temperature readings made by the use of bare-wire thermocouples indicated that the response to temperature fluctuations caused by the flow of percolating decomposition gases was more rapid than when using shielded thermocouples. Book Evaluation of Low cost Materials and Manufacturing Processes for Large Solid Rocket Nozzles Analysis of Performance Nozzle 6

Download or read book Evaluation of Low cost Materials and Manufacturing Processes for Large Solid Rocket Nozzles Analysis of Performance Nozzle 6 written by J. J. Warga and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sixth in a series of reports describing the results of static test firings conducted to verify the performance of ablative nozzle components fabricated from low-cost materials and/or using low-cost manufacturing processes. The throat insert of nozzle 6 was fabricated from AVCERAM C/S reinforcement and the throat extension from canvas duck. Spallation was observed in the throat, caused by one or both of the following: (1) low breaking strength of the fabric, and (2) damage to the fabric during wrapping. The throat extension of canvas duck performed well. Anisotropic material deposition was observed in the char of the AVCERAM C/S composite. The canvas duck composite exhibited excellent cost advantages for use in the throat extension. (Author).

Book Evaluation of Low cost Materials and Manufacturing Processes for Large Solid Rocket Nozzles Analysis of Performance Nozzle 7

Download or read book Evaluation of Low cost Materials and Manufacturing Processes for Large Solid Rocket Nozzles Analysis of Performance Nozzle 7 written by J. J. Warga and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the seventh in a series of reports describing the results of static test firings conducted to verify the performance of ablative nozzle components fabricated from low-cost materials and/or using low-cost manufacturing processes. The throat approach of Nozzle 7 was fabricated from Kraft paper; the entrance cap, throat inlet, and throat from AVCERAM C/S; and the exit cone from 41RPD asbestos. The forward portion of the exit cone exhibited severe, irregular erosion, confirming that even in large size nozzles the material capability must be matched to the requirement. The Kraft paper exhibited excellent cost advantages for use in the throat approach. (Author).
