Book Characterization of Design Parameters for Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite Reinforced Concrete Systems

Download or read book Characterization of Design Parameters for Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite Reinforced Concrete Systems written by Francisco Aguiñiga Gaona and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete structures results in significant repair and rehabilitation costs. In the past several years, new fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars have been introduced as an alternative to steel reinforcing bars. Several national and international organizations have recently developed standards based on preliminary test results. However, limited validation testing has been performed on the recommendations of these standards. High variability of the tensile properties, degradation of tensile strength, direct shear capacity, predicted deflections due to creep, cracking behavior of FRP-reinforced concrete flexural members, bond behavior and development length, and effects of thermal expansion on cracking of FRP reinforced concrete have all been reported, but are areas that need further investigation and validation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of glass FRP reinforcing bars and provide recommendations on the design and construction of concrete structures containing these bar types with regard to the areas described. The recently developed ACI 440 design guidelines were analyzed and modifications proposed.

Book FRP Reinforcement in RC Structures

Download or read book FRP Reinforcement in RC Structures written by fib Fédération internationale du béton and published by fib Fédération internationale du béton. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: fib Bulletin 40 deals mainly with the use of FRP bars as internal reinforcement for concrete structures. The background of the main physical and mechanical properties of FRP reinforcing bars is presented, with special emphasis on durability aspects. For each of the typical ultimate and serviceability limit states, the basic mechanical model is given, followed by different design models according to existing codes or design guidelines. Composite FRP materials are still relatively new in construction and most engineers are unfamiliar with their properties and characteristics. The second chapter of this bulletin therefore aims to provide practising engineers with the necessary background knowledge in this field, and also presents typical products currently available in the international market. The third chapter deals with the issue of durability and identifies the parameters that can lead to deterioration, which is necessary information when addressing design issues. A series of parameters is used to identify the allowable stress in the FRP after exposure for a specified period of time in a specific environment. The bulletin covers the issues of Ultimate Limit States (primarily dealing with flexural design), Serviceability Limit States (dealing with deflections and cracking), Shear and Punching Shear and Bond and Tension Stiffening. It provides not only the state-of-the-art but also in many cases ideas for the next generation of design guidelines. The final chapter deals with the fundamental issue of design philosophy. The use of these new materials as concrete reinforcement has forced researchers to re-think many of the fundamental principles used until now in RC design. The bulletin ends with a discussion of a possible new framework for developing partial safety factors to ensure specific safety levels that will be flexible enough to cope with new materials.

Book Mechanical and Structural Characterization of Mini bar Reinforced Concrete Beams

Download or read book Mechanical and Structural Characterization of Mini bar Reinforced Concrete Beams written by Sudeep Adhikari and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With major breakthroughs in material science in recent years, civil engineering construction technology has simultaneously gone through major paradigm shifts. From the conventional reinforcing material like steel, we witnessed the introduction of fiber reinforced polymer bars (FRP), fiber reinforced polymer wraps and multitudes of chopped reinforcing fiber materials, metallic and synthetic in recent times. This dissertation covers a comprehensive research program that was undertaken at the University of Akron for the mechanical and structural characterization of concrete reinforced with new type of reinforcing fiber material, called as Basalt minibar. Basalt minibar is a non-corrosive structural macro fiber made from basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars. It is manufactured using a simplified automated method called wet-ley up process. Basalt mini-bar possesses higher tensile strength and stiffness compared to other standard synthetic fibers and at the meantime it is non-corrosive. Fibers act as the proactive reinforcement that provides the immediate tensile load carrying capacity as soon as micro cracks develop in concrete. Fiber reinforcement can be used as the proactive load carrying element and can also be used as supportive reinforcement to control issues like shrinkage in concrete. This demands for a type of a material which is durable, has adequate strength and stiffness to impart sufficient toughness to the structure and can mix well with concrete, developing good bond strength. The primary motivation behind the research is to characterize Basalt mini-bar as a new hybrid-material which possesses the beneficial features of both metallic and synthetic fiber. The overall goal of the project was achieved through tensile strength characterization of Basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars, followed by mechanical and toughness characterization of minibar and minibar reinforced concrete (MRC), leading to strength characterization of minibar reinforced concrete (MRC) beams, finally completed with some preliminary studies on thermal behavior of minibar reinforced concrete (MRC) slab. Based on the experimental test results and the subsequent analyses findings, it was observed that Basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars exhibit strength size effect. The flexural tensile strength and post-cracking tensile strength of MRC were found to increase significantly with minibar dosage within the range considered (2 to 10%). It was observed that post-cracking behavior of beams (ductility, deflection) was significantly improved due to the addition of basalt minibar. The beams were capable of undergoing larger deformation, thus exhibiting increased maximum tensile strain at failure. Theoretical models were developed to account for the number of minibar across the crack plane, maximum load carrying capacity of MRC beams and the increase in shear strength due to the addition of minibar. The structural response of MRC slab under high temperature was found not to be satisfactory. It is believed that the dissertation provides insight into essential mechanical properties of minibar and minibar reinforced concrete. This can be further used in coming times by the new generation of engineers to study long term behavior of these materials for various durability characterizations.

This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1996, the then CEB established a Task Group with the main objective to elaborate design guidelines for the use of FRP reinforcement in accordance with the design format of the CEB-FIP Model Code and Eurocode2. With the merger of CEB and FIP into fib in 1998, this Task Group became fib TG 9.3 FRP Reinforcement for concrete structures in Commission 9 Reinforcing and Prestressing Materials and Systems. The Task Group consists of about 60 members, representing most European universities, research institutes and industrial companies working in the field of advanced composite reinforcement for concrete structures, as well as corresponding members from Canada, Japan and USA. Meetings are held twice a year and on the research level its work is supported by the EU TMR (European Union Training and Mobility of Researchers) Network "ConFibreCrete”. The work of fib TG 9.3 is performed by five working parties (WP): Material Testing and Characterization (MT&C) Reinforced Concrete (RC) Prestressed Concrete (PC) Externally Bonded Reinforcement (EBR) Marketing and Applications (M&A) This technical report constitutes the work conducted as of to date by the EBR party. This bulletin gives detailed design guidelines on the use of FRP EBR, the practical execution and the quality control, based on the current expertise and state-of-the-art knowledge of the task group members. It is regarded as a progress report since it is not the aim of this report to cover all aspects of RC strengthening with composites. Instead, it focuses on those aspects that form the majority of the design problems. several of the topics presented are subject of ongoing research and development, and the details of some modelling approaches may be subject to future revisions. as knowledge in this field is advancing rapidly, the work of the EBR WP will continue. Inspite of this limit in scope, considerable effort has been made to present a bulletin that is today’s state-of-art in the area of strengthening of concrete structures by means of externally bonded FRP reinforcement.

Book A New Configuration of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer as Reinforcement for Concrete Flexural Members

Download or read book A New Configuration of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer as Reinforcement for Concrete Flexural Members written by David Edward Rietz and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigated the effectiveness of a new configuration of GFRP reinforcing bar as possible reinforcement for tension in reinforced concrete flexural members. Eleven concrete beams reinforced with two types of "web" bars were tested in flexure to failure. Five concrete beams reinforced with materials already being used in the construction industry were tested in flexure to failure. The results from these beam tests were compared with the results from the beams reinforced with the new web bars. Observations were made regarding mode of failure, cracking behavior, and deflection behavior of concrete beams using this new type of GFRP web bar reinforcement. A flexural analysis was performed to compare moment capacities using theoretical methods and ultimate moments from experimental results. A deflection analysis was performed to compare theoretical equations for effective moment of inertia, developed for simply supported FRP reinforced concrete beams, with the ACI model for conventional steel reinforced beams and deflection data from experimental results. Also, shear capacities and development lengths based on ACI 440 provisions were compared to the experimental results.
