Book Injection Locked Synchronous Oscillators SOs and Reference Injected Phase locked Loops PLL RIs

Download or read book Injection Locked Synchronous Oscillators SOs and Reference Injected Phase locked Loops PLL RIs written by Feiran Lei and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synchronization plays an important and fundamental role as the timing basis in digital, analog, and RF integrated circuits (ICs), where Phase-Locked Loops (PLLs) find their versatile applications. The noise sources in a traditional PLL are mainly divided into two groups: noise before the low-pass loop filter such as the noise in the reference signal, Frequency Divider (FD), Phase Frequency Detector/Charge Pump (PFD/CP); and noise after the filter such as the Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) noise and the loop filter noise. The output phase noise of the PLL is the combined contribution from these two equally important in-band and out-band noise sources. This research studies the effect of the synchronization in the PLL on the decoupling of the 3dB bandwidths for different noise sources to achieve an optimum phase noise and improved locking behavior with an attenuated reference signal injection (RI) into a ring-type delay-line Voltage Controlled Synchronous Oscillator (VCSO). This dissertation begins with the development of a generalized phase model for both LC-type and ring-type VCSOs. Next, the relationship between the device baseband noise (flicker and thermal noise) and a ring-type oscillator's phase noise is derived. In addition, noise shaping functions are introduced to describe signal injection into the VCSO to achieve suppression of the oscillator in-band phase noise. Then, the transient and steady-state behavior of a Charge-Pump PLL-RI are explained with nonlinear differential equations and the phase-plane method. The nonlinear phase equation is linearized for the small-signal condition and the s-domain noise transfer functions as well as noise bandwidths are derived for different noise sources in the major components of the PLL-RI. The effect of the loop parameters and the injection strength on the output phase noise, loop settling time, and lock in range is analyzed. The analysis is verified by the SPICE simulation and experimental results from a Charge-Pump PLL-RI using a 1GHz VCSO in GlobalFoundries 130nm standard CMOS technology. The designed VCSO occupies a core area of 0.005 mm$^2$, and operates from 0.5GHz to 1.7GHz. The PLL-RI, for first-harmonic locking applications, has a core area of 0.02 mm$^2$ and consumes 2.6mW power. When a 30dB attenuation is applied, phase noise at 1MHz and 10MHz offset are reduced from -118.8dBc/Hz (PLL) to -121.9dBc/Hz (PLL-RI), and -102.3dBc/Hz (PLL) to -128.3dBc/Hz (PLL-RI), respectively, with an integrated RMS jitter from 10KHz to 30MHz of 1.55ps. Finally, another application of the PLL-RI as an integer-N frequency synthesizer is studied and tested. The PLL-RI based frequency synthesizer with the ring-type VCSO achieves comparable noise performance with LC type PLLs, but uses a much smaller chip area and features lower power consumption. To summarize, this dissertation has throughly evaluated an oscillator and a PLL under small signal injection. Compared with the traditional PLL, the all-CMOS PLL-RI offers faster settling time, wider lock in range, and ability to decouple 3dB bandwidths for different noise sources to achieve an optimum noise performance. The applications of PLL-RIs can be extended to analog, digital, and RF systems for different timing schemes.

Book Multi GHz Frequency Synthesis Division

Download or read book Multi GHz Frequency Synthesis Division written by Hamid R. Rategh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 10 years extensive effort has been dedicated to commercial wireless local area network (WLAN) systems. Despite all these efforts, however, none of the existing systems has been successful, mainly due to their low data rates. The increasing demand for WLAN systems that can support data rates in excess of 20 Mb/s enticed the FCC to create an unlicensed national information infrastructure (U–NII) band at 5 GHz. This frequency band provides 300 MHz of spectrum in two segments: a 200 MHz(5.15–5.35 GHz) and a 100 MHz (5.725–5.825 GHz) frequency band. This newly released spectrum, and the fast trend of CMOS scaling, provide an opportunity to design WLAN systems with high data rate and low cost. One of the existing standards at 5 GHz is the European high performance radio LAN (HIPERLAN) standard that supports data rates as high as 20 Mb/s. One of the main building blocks of each wireless system is the f- quency synthesizer. Phase–locked loops (PLLs) are universally used to design radio frequency synthesizers. Reducing the power consumption of the frequency dividers of a PLL has always been a challenge. In this book, we introduce an alternative solution for conventional flipflop based xiv MULTI–GHZ FREQUENCY SYNTHESIS & DIVISION frequency dividers. An injection–locked frequency divider (ILFD) takes advantage of the narrowband nature of the wireless systems and employs resonators to trade off bandwidth for power.

Book The Analysis of Synchronized Oscillators by Use of Phase locked loops

Download or read book The Analysis of Synchronized Oscillators by Use of Phase locked loops written by Leon W. Couch and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synchronization behavior for an electronic oscillator is examined by the use of a first-order phase-lock-loop (PLL) model for the oscillator. A Hilbert transform relationship is obtained which relates a known beat waveform (between the oscillator and a locking-signal) to the other possible beat waveforms (as described by Huntoon and Weiss and others). The equivalence between an oscillator and a PLL is established in terms of equivalent locking characteristics. Using this PLL model, beat waveforms are obtained for some specified locking signals. The locking phenomenon between two oscillators is also examined by the use of a PLL model for each oscillator. Finally, the locking characteristics for an oscillator which is frequencly-modulated by a feedback signal is studied, and it is shown that the lock-in width may be increased over that for the oscillator without feedback, or, alternately, the lock-in width may be reduced to zero. This is accomplished with relative ease by adjustment of the feedback parameters. All of the results of this report are verified experimentally as well as theoretically. (Author).

Book Recent Advances in Nonlinear Dynamics and Synchronization

Download or read book Recent Advances in Nonlinear Dynamics and Synchronization written by Kyandoghere Kyamakya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In essence, the dynamics of real world systems (i.e. engineered systems, natural systems, social systesms, etc.) is nonlinear. The analysis of this nonlinear character is generally performed through both observational and modeling processes aiming at deriving appropriate models (mathematical, logical, graphical, etc.) to simulate or mimic the spatiotemporal dynamics of the given systems. The complex intrinsic nature of these systems (i.e. nonlinearity and spatiotemporal dynamics) can lead to striking dynamical behaviors such as regular or irregular, stable or unstable, periodicity or multi-periodicity, torus or chaotic dynamics. The various potential applications of the knowledge about such dynamics in technical sciences (engineering) are being intensively demonstrated by diverse ongoing research activities worldwide. However, both the modeling and the control of the nonlinear dynamics in a range of systems is still not yet well-understood (e.g. system models with time varying coefficients, immune systems, swarm intelligent systems, chaotic and fractal systems, stochastic systems, self-organized systems, etc.). This is due amongst others to the challenging task of establishing a precise and systematic fundamental or theoretical framework (e.g. methods and tools) to analyze, understand, explain and predict the nonlinear dynamical behavior of these systems, in some cases even in real-time. The full insight in systems’ nonlinear dynamic behavior is generally achieved through approaches involving analytical, numerical and/or experimental methods.
