Book Characterization and Determination of Erosion Resistance

Download or read book Characterization and Determination of Erosion Resistance written by American Society for Testing and Materials and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1970 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report seeks to offer a best current assessment of the several elevated temperature properties that commonly form the basis for establishing allowable stresses or design stress intensity values. The results are presented in a form readily usable for that purpose. The data that are evaluated are those that have become available since the publication in 1955 of ASTM Data Series Publication DS 11 (formerly STP No. 180), Elevated Temperature Properties of Carbon Steels, as well as selected data from that earlier publication. The body of the report provides, in text, tables and figures, details concerning the materials, the evaluation procedures that were employed, and the results.

Book Suffusion Susceptibility Characterization by Taking Into Consideration the Context of Engineering Practice

Download or read book Suffusion Susceptibility Characterization by Taking Into Consideration the Context of Engineering Practice written by Dinh Minh Tran (Auteur d'une thèse en Génie civil).) and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal erosion processes in earth structures and their foundations may increase the failure risk of such structures. Suffusion, one of the main internal erosion processes, selectively erodes the fine particles that move through the coarser grains. Thus to ensure the safety assessment of these structures, it is important to characterize the soil suffusion susceptibility. Most of suffusion tests described in literature were performed under vertical flow, whereas the flow in earth structures can be horizontal as well. To study the potential influence of the flow direction, a new apparatus is developed and a series of suffusion tests is carried out. Two cohesionless soils which slightly differ from each other in their gradations are tested. The results show that both soils are slightly more resistant under horizontal flow and they highlight the combined effect of the hydraulic loading and the gravity on the detached particles. For specimens constituted by two layers of each soil and under both flow directions, the suffusion susceptibility is mainly influenced by the more erodible soil when the flow is parallel to the soil horizons. While the suffusion susceptibility mainly depends on the more resistant soil when the flow is perpendicular to soil horizons. Moreover a method is proposed to select the pore opening size of the downstream filter in order to avoid any underestimation of the soil suffusion susceptibility. Due to the great length of earth structures, and the heterogeneity of soils, it is important to optimize the experimental campaigns, thanks to a statistical analysis. From the database of suffusion tests of our team and complementary tests performed on seven soils, an estimation of the erosion resistance index is proposed, which is based on four parameters, which are quite easy to measure.

Book Characterization of Polyurethane at Multiple Scales for Erosion Mechanisms Under Sand Particle Impact

Download or read book Characterization of Polyurethane at Multiple Scales for Erosion Mechanisms Under Sand Particle Impact written by Nirmal Shankar Sigamani and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin polyurethane films have been widely used as erosion-resistant coatings on helicopter rotor blades. Published research has mainly focused on empirical studies that relate the mechanical properties such as rebound resilience and hardness of polyurethane to solid particle erosion resistance. However polyurethane possesses phase mixing at multiple scales and thus sand particle erosion resistance depends also on the micro structure and the phase mixing. Hence, it is very important to carry out detailed and systematic investigations to understand the step-by-step mechanism of erosion and how it relates to the polyurethane micro, meso, and macrostructure. Thermal transitions of the pristine films have been studied through Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) yielding micro-scale information such as glass transition temperatures of the hard and soft segments and melting temperature of the soft segment. The next stage of our study involved sand particle erosion tests carried out at 500 mph, at an impact angle of 30°. Test specimens were exposed to two different sand media at different mass loadings ranging from 0.1 to 20 g/cm2. The tools of characterization used on the pristine polyurethane are once again used on the eroded specimens, with the goal to compare pre- and post- erosion results. The comparison of FTIR results on pre-eroded and eroded films reveal the removal of macromolecular bonds corresponding to soft segments in the micro scale. The reduction of the crystalline portion of the soft segment observed from DSC results supports the FTIR findings. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the eroded specimens are used to correlate the sequence of the damage due to erosion. The observations revealed that after initial ductile deformation of the soft segments on the surface, brittle cracks are formed on the hard segments. The increased exposure to sand particles leads to formation of fragments containing mainly soft segments with cracks in the hard segments propagating in a brittle manner. As exposure increases, cracks intersect and material on the surface gets removed which mainly contains the soft segments as revealed by the FTIR and DSC results.
