Book excerpt: Rural community colleges are the only institutions of higher education for huge swaths of the United States. Their role in their communities requires them to serve a variety of functions, from education provider, to economic development center, to a source of entertainment. Often this entertainment comes in the form of community college athletics. As rural community colleges make up 61% of community college athletics programs (Bush, et al., 2009; Casten̳eda, et al., 2006), these changes can impact a large number of students and communities. Despite the importance of this facet of rural community colleges, little is known about their athletes. This quantitative study sought to provide information regarding this oft-ignored area of intercollegiate athletics and provide information regarding the students who participate in this endeavor and their engagement with their institutions through their educational mission. This study was designed to explore and compare the student engagement of rural community college student athletes to the student engagement benchmarks of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). Determining if there was a predictive relationship, when controlling for background characteristics, between student athlete benchmark scores and self-reported GPA, was done through regression analysis. The results found that rural community college student athletes differ greatly from the general characteristics of rural community college students, and they are engaged in the campus at a high rate through almost all of the benchmarks. Race and academic preparedness greatly affected reported GPAs and all of the benchmarks were factors in predicting GPA, though not all positively.

Book excerpt: Community colleges have come under increased scrutiny lately for their low retention and graduation rates, but these institutions are not the only focal point of public criticism. Intercollegiate athletics has recently been admonished for its emphasis on athletic excellence, often in place of academic achievement. Alabama Community College Conference member institutions, however, lack empirical evidence that identifies whether these assertions are evident within the ACCC, thus preventing campus leaders from implementing strategies designed to enhance lower student success rates among student-athletes enrolled at their schools. Therefore, this study sought to determine rates of student success among Alabama community college baseball and softball players. In particular, the research explored which demographic factors might be useful in predicting these student-athletes' cumulative community college grade point averages, as well as retention rates and degree completion rates. Univariate analyses, along with linear and logistic regression methodologies, were employed to analyze the data and to answer the six research questions. The sample used for this study included baseball and softball players previously enrolled at three Alabama rural community colleges. Results indicated females, White student-athletes, those from a higher socioeconomic status, and student-athletes earning high school diplomas each outperformed their counterparts. Within all three regression models, gender was noted as a significant predictor, followed by socioeconomic status in two of the three regression analyses (cumulative community college grade point average and degree completion rates), then race and educational background in one analysis (retention rates and cumulative community college grade point average respectively).

It is expressed differently in various contexts of education. This study sought to determine differences in engagement between students enrolled at rural community college students using secondary data from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). This study was grounded in Kuh's (2001) student engagement theory. Descriptive and inferential statistics were employed to analyze the data and to answer the research questions. This study defined engagement by using the five CCSSE benchmarks of student engagement. The sample used for this study included students who participated in the 2012 CCSSE Cohort at three rural community colleges in northern Alabama. The results of this study revealed that differences in engagement experiences do exist between students based on the following student characteristics: gender, race/ethnicity, age, generation, enrollment status, and college readiness. This study also revealed that lack of finances is the most commonly reported challenged for students, in spite of the characteristics mentioned above. The research also determined that students at these institutions seldom participate in co-curricular activities. However, they are engaged in activities related to their coursework.

However, their retention rates are dismal and have remained stagnant for more than 30 years. The low retention rates have serious implications for community colleges and the community at large. Low retention rates impact such things as individual health and well-being as well as funding for colleges to operate. As such, this correlational study was designed to understand the relationship between student engagement and specific student characteristics and persistence in college. The specific student engagement variables examined were student-faculty interaction, college GPA, academic self-efficacy, late registration, and sense of belonging. Moderation and mediation analysis examined the effects of race, first-generation status, and high school GPA. Data from the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) that was administered at Tidewater Community College (TCC) was used for the analysis. The analysis revealed that high school GPA and student-faculty interaction are positively related to college GPA. Additionally, it found student-faculty interaction to be positively related to persistence. None of the moderation and mediation hypotheses were supported in the study. Given some of the issues found with the research design used for this study, it was recommended that future research consider conducting focus groups or interviews to study persistence instead of using archival data.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to use existing data from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) to examine the relationship between student engagement indicators and NCAA Division I student-athletes' participation in high-impact practices, specifically internships and study abroad. Student engagement indicators were the independent variables in this study and included academic challenge, learning with peers, experiences with faculty, and campus environment. This study examined a sample of senior student-athletes enrolled at an NCAA Division I institution who completed NSSE in 2019 (N = 1,794). This study utilized descriptive, correlation, and logistic regression to answer the research questions. After controlling for student demographic characteristics, student engagement indicators predicted student-athletes' participation in internships. The variables learning with peers and experiences with faculty were statistically significant, while academic challenge and campus environment were not significant. Student engagement indicators also predicted student-athletes' participation in study abroad, with academic challenge being significant, while the other engagement indicators were not significant. The findings from this study suggest that to create an environment that fosters student-athletes' participation in internships and study abroad, institutions need to facilitate ways to increase student-athletes' engagement. The findings from this study provide insight to practitioners interested in increasing the number of students who participate in high-impact practices.

Book excerpt: Institutions of higher education face challenges to improve the student success measures of retention, progression, and graduation, which are metrics used to evaluate colleges and universities. One way in which many institutions have sought to increase accessibility to higher education and student engagement is through athletics; however, limited research exists regarding the lack of academic success of student-athletes at two-year colleges. Drawing upon a student engagement theoretical framework presented by Coates, the purpose of the causal-comparative research study was to examine the differences in perceived usage and impact of academic support services by two-year college student-athletes in Florida. The data were collected from 42 student-athletes, 13 athletic department personnel, and 13 academic support services personnel at three selected colleges in Florida who participated in the National Junior College Athletic Association using an online survey. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVAs to determine if statistically significant differences existed between the groups. The study did not yield any statistically significant differences regarding the groups’ beliefs in usage and impact of various academic support services. The results indicated that academic support services may not be as widely or as frequently used to have the greatest impact on the academic success of two-year college student-athletes. The findings of this study may assist institutions with developing academic support resources to improve the academic success of two-year college student-athletes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to better understand the value of the extracurricular experience for college students. Gaining insight into the variety of opportunities for student personal development as a result of participation in intercollegiate athletics and extracurricular activities during college is explored by this study. Quality student engagement activities and understanding the reasons for engagement contributing to personal development continues to be valuable information in development of student on campus programming at colleges and universities. This qualitative study takes a phenomenological approach to describe the experiences of students involved in intercollegiate athletics competition at a small rural serving community college in the Midwest. Through a series of semi-structured interviews of at least (n = 14), students tell their stories of personal development and the contributions that intercollegiate athletics made to their out-of-class experiences. Findings of this study indicate that the participants valued their experiences in participating in intercollegiate athletics, reporting the development of personal pride and a greater sense of self-identity. For the participants in this study, intercollegiate athletics provided an opportunity for increased student engagement and thus contributed to the overall campus environment.

Book excerpt: Research indicates that college students who engage in proven educational practices associated with high levels of learning and achievement gain more from their educational experiences and have higher rates of degree completion than those who do not. Studies also indicate that community college students who transfer to senior colleges are less likely to engage in these proven educational practices than non-transfer students attending senior colleges. Participants in this research study were administered a survey developed by the National Survey on Student Engagement (NSSE) to compare levels of engagement in five benchmark categories. All-USA Community College Academic Team national winners attending senior colleges were compared with a general population of community college transfers students attending senior colleges and All-USA Community College Academic Team national winners attending senior colleges were compared with non-transfer students attending senior colleges. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Independent samples t-tests were run to determine if significant differences existed in the levels of engagement between the groups. The findings of this study showed that the 2006 All-USA Community College Academic Team national winner's levels of engagement in each of the five benchmarks categories were higher and significantly different when compared to the other two groups. Further, the personal characteristics of the 2006 All-USA Community College Academic Team national winners were analyzed to determine if there were significant differences which led to higher levels of engagement while attending senior colleges. The findings revealed that only one personal characteristic, gender, contributed to a significant difference in the level of engagement for a benchmark. Female respondents' level of engagement in the academic challenge benchmark was higher and significantly different compared to male respondents.

Book excerpt: For years, community college research has focused on student engagement in an effort to improve student academic performance, retention, and graduation completion rates. While the positive effects of student engagement at both the community college and 4-year university levels have been consistently supported by previous research, there has been very limited research that has focused exclusively on the impact of student engagement in the growing subset of Workforce, now referred to as Career and Technical Education students. Since 2003, community colleges have employed the Community College Student Report to gather data from students on several variables positively correlated with increased student engagement levels. The purpose of this causal- comparative study is to compare student engagement levels between Academic and Career and Technical Education students enrolled in a college district in Texas as reported on the Community College Student Report which covers five major benchmark areas. If a difference existed, the original contention that Career and Technical Education students' inputs would differ could indicate the need for more focused attention on this group in the normal administration of the survey. The original expectation was that there would be statistically significant differences in responses between groups; however, the results indicated unremarkable differences in student engagement levels between the two groups in all five benchmark areas and reflected only slight differences in any of the subscales.
