Book Neutral Pion Production in Nucleus nucleus Collisions at 158 and 200 GeV nucleon

Download or read book Neutral Pion Production in Nucleus nucleus Collisions at 158 and 200 GeV nucleon written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two years ago, at the 12th Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics held here in Snowbird, the authors presented WA80 limits on direct photon production in 200-GeV 32S + Au collisions. It was found that the results were consistent (within 1[sigma]) with the absence of an excess of photons over those that can be accounted for by the two-photon decay branches of [pi]° and [eta] mesons and by the small photon contributions from other radiative decays. They are in the process of finalizing the direct-photon production results from collisions of lead nuclei at 158 GeV/nucleon. The author briefly discusses the status of the analysis and gives some preliminary results at the end of this talk. However, most of this presentation is concerned with a very different aspect of the photon measurements: distributions of neutral pions. In contrast to direct photons which probe initial collision conditions, hadrons, such as neutral pions, interact strongly and decouple late in the reaction evolution and, thus, provide information concerning the system at freeze out. Transverse momentum spectra at low and intermediate p{sub T} relate to thermodynamic and hydrodynamic descriptions of the hot, dense systems. In addition, the high-p{sub T} region reflects the hard-scattering regime and may help one understand initial-state particle production by forming a bridge to proton-proton and proton-nucleus results. It follows that it is essential that the [pi]° measurements cover a large p{sub T} range.

Book Energy and Target Dependence of the Pseudo rapidity Distributions in Pion and Proton nucleus Collisions at Fermilab Energies

Download or read book Energy and Target Dependence of the Pseudo rapidity Distributions in Pion and Proton nucleus Collisions at Fermilab Energies written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiparticle production in hadron-nucleus collisions has been studied using hodoscope arrays. Data on angular distributions were collected for incident .pi./sup + -/, K/sup + -/, and P/sup + -/ at 50, 100, and 200 GeV with targets ranging from hydrogen through uranium. The extent in pseudo-rapidity of particles produced in the target fragmentation region increases with energy. Proton and pion induced reactions exhibit different behavior for the same target nucleus. However, for target nuclei with identical values of .nu.bar, (where .nu.bar is the average thickness in units of the mean free path of the incident particle) the behavior is similar. Pseudo-rapidity distributions are compared with theoretical models.

Book Nucleus nucleus Collisions at Ultra relativistic Energies

Download or read book Nucleus nucleus Collisions at Ultra relativistic Energies written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is based on three lectures presented at the Prague Seminar on Relativistic Heavy-Ion Physics in September 1994. The first lecture, following a general introduction, focuses on three different aspects of the CERN experiment WA80. The author first presents results on global event characteristics deduced primarily from measured distributions of transverse energy and of forward energy. The purpose is to introduce the main general features of nucleus-nucleus reactions at the highest energies currently available. He highlights the role of projectile-target geometry, discusses the degree of nuclear stopping, and estimates the energy densities attained in these reactions. This discussion is followed by a presentation of one of two topics that are unique to the WA80 experiment and which are not addressed by any of the other CERN collaborations that study nucleus-nucleus reactions: direct measurements of photons. The second topic unique to WA80, measurements of proton-proton correlations in the target-fragmentation region, is covered in the first part of the second lecture. The remainder of the second lecture is devoted to a selective overview of results obtained at the AGS accelerator of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The third lecture is devoted to a discussion of the two main experiments, STAR and PHENIX, planned for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, RHIC, under construction at BNL.

Book Hadron Nucleus Interactions

Download or read book Hadron Nucleus Interactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastic and inelastic scattering of intermediate energy (less than or equal to 1 GeV) protons by nuclei is considered first. The discussion focuses on the determination of the proton-nucleus optical potential in terms of the elementary nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes and the properties of the target and residual nucleus. The result is a series of terms for the optical potential. Then the interaction of pions with nuclei for energies in the neighborhood of the .delta.-resonance is discussed. In this energy domain an incident pion will with high probability be absorbed by a nucleon to produce the .delta.-resonance and thus form a .delta.-particle hole state in the nucleus. Next, the subject of hypernuclei is taken up. The .lambda. hypernuclei and a recently observed .sigma. hypernuclei comprise situations in which the core nucleus can be probed by a baryon of roughly the same mass as a nucleon, with similar albeit not identical interactions with nucleons. But the .lambda. (or .sigma.) does not need to satisfy the Pauli exclusion principle with respect to the nucleons, and therefore can be in orbits forbidden to it if it were a nucleon. As the energy of the projectile increases, it becomes correspondingly more important to take relativistic effects into account. The importance of these effects is strikingly revealed by experiments involving the collision of ultrarelativistic hadrons, protons, pions, kaons (up to Fermilab energies) with nuclei. This phenomenon forms part of the final topic, which includes as well as the collision of relativistic heavy ion projectiles with nuclei. A nuclear Weiszaecker-Williams method developed for dealing with peripheral collisions is described. 32 figures, 10 tables. (RWR).

Book Strange Particle and Antiproton Production in S Nucleus Collisions at 200 GeV

Download or read book Strange Particle and Antiproton Production in S Nucleus Collisions at 200 GeV written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central S+S, S+Ag and S+Au collisions at 200 GeV/nucleon were studied in experiment NA35 at the CERN SPS. Recent results on strange particle production as well as the preliminary results on antiproton production are presented and discussed. Enhanced strangeness production relative to the pion and antiproton yields is observed in nucleus-nucleus collisions relative to p-p and p-A. Microscopic string models fail to consistently describe the available set of data.
