Book Characteristics of Factory grade Hardwood Logs Delivered to Appalachian Sawmills

Download or read book Characteristics of Factory grade Hardwood Logs Delivered to Appalachian Sawmills written by Curtis D. Goho and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Until now, information about the characteristics of sawlogs delivered to Appalachian sawmills has been generally unavailable. We know what the standing timber is like, from forest-survey data. But this paper covers a different spectrum: the frequency distributions-by size, grade, volume, and species group-of factory-grade logs actually harvested and delivered to the mills. These data were compiled from records of thousands of logs measured during studies of logging and milling economics at 15 Appalachian sawmills. S3.

Download or read book Characteristics of Factory Grade Hardwood Logs Delivered to Appalachian Sawmills Classic Reprint written by Curtis D. Goho and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics of Factory-Grade Hardwood Logs Delivered to Appalachian Sawmills Except for the oak log groups, there were noticeably fewer 14 foot logs than 12 and 16-foot logs. Evidently buckers have learned that logs that are straight enough for 14-foot lengths can usually be extended to 16 feet without noticeable scaling penalty. Furthermore, logging contractors favor 16-foot logs because of greater trucking efficiency. Sawmill operators also prefer 16-foot logs to 14-foot logs if the longer logs are reasonably straight. So the production of fewer 14-foot logs may be more a matter of economics and policy than a function of stem shape. Download or read book Sawing SHOLO Logs written by Ronald E. Coleman and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three different methods of sawing the SHOLO log were compared on a board-foot yield basis. Using sawmill simulation, all three methods of sawing were performed on the same sample of logs, eliminating differences due to sapling. A statistical test was made to determine whether or not there were any real differences between the board-foot yields. Two of the sawing methods provided about the same board-foot yields; one provided about 40 percent less.

Book Some Effects of Paraformaldehyde on Wood Surrounding Tapholes in Sugar Maple Trees

Download or read book Some Effects of Paraformaldehyde on Wood Surrounding Tapholes in Sugar Maple Trees written by Alex L. Shigo and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: S2Pills of paraformaldehyde (trioxymethylene) are commonly used in tapholes in sugar maple trees (Acer saccharum Marsh.) to increase the yield of sap collected for making syrup and sugar (2, 4, 5, 8). The explanation offered for this increase in sap yield is that microorganisms in the tapholes (7) cause premature decline and stoppage of the sap flow (1, 6), but that paraformaldehyde increases sap yield by inhibiting their growth (2). But what happens to the tree? To determine the effects of paraformaldehyde on the tissues surrounding tapholes, and on the microorganisms in those tissues, sugar maple trees were dissected and studied. This paper is a report on that study.S3.
