Download or read book Southwestern Desert Resources written by William L. Halvorson and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The southwestern deserts stretch from southeastern California to west Texas and then south to central Mexico. The landscape of this region is known as basin and range topography featuring to “sky islands” of forest rising from the desert lowlands which creates a uniquely diverse ecology. The region is further complicated by an international border, where governments have caused difficulties for many animal populations. This book puts a spotlight on individual research projects which are specific examples of work being done in the area and when they are all brought together, to shed a general light of understanding the biological and cultural resources of this vast region so that those same resources can be managed as effectively and efficiently as possible. The intent is to show that collaborative efforts among federal, state agency, university, and private sector researchers working with land managers, provides better science and better management than when scientists and land managers work independently.

Book excerpt: Algonquin Wildlife: Lessons in Survival is a celebration of the vast array of wildlife studies ongoing in Ontario’s very first provincial park. Probably more research has been done in Algonquin than in any other protected landscape in the world. Norm Quinn, long-time Park Management Biologist in Algonquin, has been fortunate to know and to work with many of those dedicated and unique wildlife researchers who roam and probe the forests and lakes in search of Nature’s secrets. His knowledge, experience and sense of humour combine to transform technical biological studies, on moose, wolves, fish and other creatures of the wild, into entertaining and inviting stories without losing the significance of the research. This is also a book about Algonquin, Ontario’s flagship Park and one of the foremost canoe-tripping wilderness sites in the world. Through Algonquin Wildlife, you are invited to explore this relatively unknown but vital part of the Park’s heritage – a must for both seasoned and budding naturalists.

  • Author : William J. McShea
  • Publisher : JHU Press

Download or read book Oak Forest Ecosystems written by William J. McShea and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oak Forest Ecosystems focuses on the relationship between an oak forest's acorn yield and species of wildlife that depend on it. It begins by treating factors such as oak distribution, forest fires, tree diseases and pests, dynamics of acorn production, and acorn dispersal by birds and mammals. Special consideration is given to the phenomenon of masting—whereby oaks in a given area will produce huge crops of acorns at irregular intervals—a key component for wildlife researchers and managers in understanding patterns of scarcity and abundance in the creatures that feed on this crop. Relationships between oaks and animals such as mice, squirrels, turkeys, deer, and bear are discussed, as are the differences between eastern, southern Appalachian, southwestern, and California oak forests. This book was released on 2022-05-04 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American black bear (Ursus americanus) of north central Utah occupies a habitat used for livestock grazing, logging, heavy recreational uses, and human habitation. We began this study in 1985 to determine the food habits, habitat use patterns, home range sizes, productivity, and general health of this population. Grasses and forbs provided the bulk of the spring diets. Animal matter was also a major component of their yearly diet. Litter size averaged 1.7 cubs per adult female during the 10 years of this study. Home range sizes for males was 3 times larger than for females. Five subadult males dispersed from our study area over distances ranging from 12 miles (20 km) to 57 miles (91 km). All were dead within 3 years. The purpose of this study was to answer basic questions and provide management recommendations to ensure the Hobble Creek-Diamond Fork black bear population will endure for many, many years. These black bears live near a human population of 200,000 and stay almost conflict-free. We explored reasons why they stay good neighbors.
