Book Early Holistic Scoring of Writing

Download or read book Early Holistic Scoring of Writing written by Richard Haswell and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the most fair and efficient way to assess the writing performance of students? Although the question gained importance during the US educational accountability movement of the 1980s and 1990s, the issue had preoccupied international language experts and evaluators long before. One answer to the question, the assessment method known as holistic scoring, is central to understanding writing in academic settings. Early Holistic Scoring of Writing addresses the history of holistic essay assessment in the United Kingdom and the United States from the mid-1930s to the mid-1980s—and newly conceptualizes holistic scoring by philosophically and reflectively reinterpreting the genre’s origin, development, and significance. The book chronicles holistic scoring from its initial origin in the United Kingdom to the beginning of its heyday in the United States. Chapters cover little-known history, from the holistic scoring of school certificate examination essays written by Blitz evacuee children in Devon during WWII to teacher adaptations of holistic scoring in California schools during the 1970s. Chapters detail the complications, challenges, and successes of holistic scoring from British high-stakes admissions examinations to foundational pedagogical research by Bay Area Writing Project scholars. The book concludes with lessons learned, providing a guide for continued efforts to assess student writing through evidence models. Exploring the possibility of actionable history, Early Holistic Scoring of Writing reconceptualizes writing assessment. Here is a new history that retells the origins of our present body of knowledge in writing studies.

Book excerpt: Twenty-four news networks, a plethora of newspapers and magazines, vibrant news-talk radio, and the ubiquitous Internet highlight our society as information-driven. With such a steady stream of hard facts mixed with publicised opinions, the mainstream population has an opinion on everything. Most anyone seems itching to argue their side of an issue, making once private beliefs fodder for general consumption. A staple of any medium's content is a regular public opinion poll on whatever hot topic strikes the editor's fancy. From the significant to the mundane, public opinion permeates society. Accordingly, politicians have taken note of these opinions and adopted stands and values that put them in tune with public sentiment. An understanding of the nature of public opinion, therefore, is paramount in today's world. This book assembles and presents a carefully chosen bibliography on public opinion in its many forms. The collection of references makes for a valuable resource in studying and researching the critical issue of public opinion. Easy access to these pieces of literature are then provided with author, title, and subject indexes.

Nettles and published by Department of Education Office of Educational. This book was released on 2000 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report, using data from the 1992-93 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty, examines differences among postsecondary faculty by gender and by race/ethnicity. Comparisons were made on several human capital variables (education/experience) and structural variables (academic discipline/institution type), as well as for faculty outcomes (salary/tenure/rank). A multivariate analysis of factors associated with salary was also conducted. The study found differences between male and female faculty members in salary and rank, with female full-time faculty averaging lower salaries than males. Age, education, and experience also differed by gender, with female full-time faculty having lower educational levels and less experience than male faculty. Differences among racial/ethnic groups were also noted: white faculty generally had higher salaries and were more likely to be tenured and to be full professors than black faculty; and Black, non-Hispanic full-time faculty were less likely than white, non-Hispanic faculty to have higher salaries, tenure, and full professorships. Sections include an introduction, which notes prior research on the determinants of faculty salary, tenure, and rank, and methodology; sections examining representation of faculty by gender and by race/ethnicity; a section on the multivariate analysis; and a conclusion. Appended are technical notes, standard error tables, and additional data. (Contains 44 references.) (CH)
