Both explicit and implicit methods were formulated by the time-central and spatial-windward algorithm to better describe wave motion. A new trapezoidal consistent implicit scheme was shown to be unconditionally stable for the linear initial value system and was able to generate numerical solutions comparable to those of the established explicit method. The formulation of the three-dimensional system including generalized coordinate system was completed but not explored. Book excerpt: Tables are presented containing 69,000 values of a set of characteristic functions which first arose in problems of supersonic wing-body interference. The tables are useful in problems of supersonic flow involving aerodynamic shapes which are wholly or in part quasi-cylinders of nearly circular cross section. A number of uses are described in the aerodynamics of bodies alone, body-body or shock-body interference, wing-body interference, the vortex-panel interference. Three illustrative examples are worked out in detail. First, the pressure field due to fuselage indentation is calculated and presented in a form independent of Mach number. Secondly, the tables are applied to a problem involving a previously unpublished solution to the Navier-Stokes equations; namely, the boundary-layer profiles of a circular cylinder moved impulsively with a constant axial force in a viscous incompressible fluid. In the final example, the wave drag of corrugated circular cylinders is calculated as a function of the number of corrugations and their wave length. Several nonaerodynamic applications are pointed out in the fields of acoustics and heat conduction. Generally speaking, the tables are applicable to boundary-value problems of the second kind involving the wave equation in three dimensions with approximately circular cylindrical boundaries or involving the unsteady heat-conduction equation in two space dimensions with nearly circular boundaries.

Engineering soundness and economic feasibility are no longer sufficient criteria for construction of hydraulic works. As a result, environmental considerations have become very much a part of hydraulic analyses. In response to growing environmental concerns, the field of hydraulics has expanded and a new branch, called Environmental Hydraulics, has emerged. The focus of this branch is on hydraulic analyses of those environmental issues that are important for protection, restoration, and managementof environmental quality. The motivation for this book grew out of the desire to provide a hydraulic discussion of some of the key environmental issues.It is hoped that the book would serve to stimulate others to write more comprehensive texts on this subject of growing importance.

A factor common to these overlapping subjects is their basic dependence on the treatment of light as a randomly fluctuating excitation. Moreover, they all necessitate a thorough understanding of the phenomenon of light detection and the additional randomness it introduces. My objective in writing this book is to provide a unified and general presentation of a basic theoretical background central to these areas. This book has a threefold purpose: to present a systematic treatment of the statistical properties of optical fields, to develop methods for deter mining the statistics of the photoelectron events that are generated when such fields are intercepted by photodetectors, and to examine methods of estimating unknown field parameters from measurements of the photoelectron events. Emphasis is placed on the photoelectron measurements that yield in formation pertinent to spectroscopy and optical communication. Although some books that treat the theory of coherence and the statisti cal properties of light are available, the vast body of information central to problems of photoelectron statistics and its applications is scattered in various professional journals and conference proceedings.

The combustion community is well served by its specialized events, most notable is the bi annual International Combustion Symposium, held under the auspices of the Combustion Institute. Mixing is often considered somewhere in between these two. This broad landscape was addressed in this Sym posium in a somewhat temporal linear fashion of increasing complexity. The lectures considered the many challenges posed by adding one ele ment to the base formed by others: turbulence and turbulent mixing in the absence of combustion through to turbulent mixing dominated by chemistry and combustion.
