Book Characteristic Time Scales in Gamma Ray Bursts

Download or read book Characteristic Time Scales in Gamma Ray Bursts written by Valentino Esposito and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) light curve temporal analysis provides useful information about the nature of the phenomenon and the physics behind it. We investigate the presence of characteristic time scales in GRB prompt light curves using wavelets, a relatively new analysis technique with the property of decomposing the input signal on a set of localised basis functions, which are best suited than long waves to analyise transient phenomena such as GRBs. Wavelets are used to perform wavelet filtering and wavelet power spectra on the 50 brightest GRBs detected by BeppoSAX, looking for the dominant time scales in the GRB prompt emission. We found that GRBs can be classified based on their power spectra shape. We looked for correlations between the temporal power and the peak energy of the GRB energy spectrum. We tentatively found that what seems to be mostly important is the temporal power at shorter time scales: a large power at these time scales is more likely to be associated to large values of the time-averaged peak energy.

Download or read book Observational Astrophysics written by Pierre Léna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ,This is the updated, widely revised, restructured and expanded third edition of Léna et al.'s successful work Observational Astrophysics. It presents a synthesis on tools and methods of observational astrophysics of the early 21st century. Written specifically for astrophysicists and graduate students, this textbook focuses on fundamental and sometimes practical limitations on the ultimate performance that an astronomical system may reach, rather than presenting particular systems in detail. In little more than a decade there has been extraordinary progress in imaging and detection technologies, in the fields of adaptive optics, optical interferometry, in the sub-millimetre waveband, observation of neutrinos, discovery of exoplanets, to name but a few examples. The work deals with ground-based and space-based astronomy and their respective fields. And it also presents the ambitious concepts behind space missions aimed for the next decades. Avoiding particulars, it covers the whole of the electromagnetic spectrum, and provides an introduction to the new forms of astronomy becoming possible with gravitational waves and neutrinos. It also treats numerical aspects of observational astrophysics: signal processing, astronomical databases and virtual observatories.

Book Toward an Understanding of the Progenitors of Gamma Ray Bursts

Download or read book Toward an Understanding of the Progenitors of Gamma Ray Bursts written by Joshua S. Bloom and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The various possibilities for the origin ("progenitors") of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) manifest in differing observable properties. Through deep spectroscopic and high-resolution imaging observations of some GRB hosts, I demonstrate that well-localized long-duration GRBs are connected with otherwise normal star-forming galaxies at moderate redshifts of order unity. Using high-mass binary stellar population synthesis models, I quantify the expected spatial extent around galaxies of coalescing neutron stars, one of the leading contenders for GRB progenitors. I then test this scenario by examining the offset distribution of GRBs about their apparent hosts making extensive use of ground-based optical data from Keck and Palomar and space-based imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. The offset distribution appears to be inconsistent with the coalescing neutron star binary hypothesis (and, similarly, black-hole--neutron star coalescences); instead, the distribution is statistically consistent with a population of progenitors that closely traces the ultra-violet light of galaxies. This is naturally explained by bursts which originate from the collapse of massive stars ``collapsars''). This claim is further supported by the unambiguous detections of intermediate-time (approximately three weeks after the bursts) emission ``bumps'' which appear substantially more red than the afterglows themselves. I claim that these bumps could originate from supernovae that occur at approximately the same time as the associated GRB; if true, GRB 980326 and GRB 011121 provide strong observational evidence connecting cosmological GRBs to high-redshift supernovae and implicate massive stars as the progenitors of at least some long-duration GRBs.

  • Author : Steven Weinberg
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2008-02-21
  • ISBN : 0191523607
  • Pages : 616 pages

Download or read book Cosmology written by Steven Weinberg and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-02-21 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique in the detailed, self-contained, and comprehensive treatment that it gives to the ideas and formulas that are used and tested in modern cosmological research. It divides into two parts, each of which provides enough material for a one-semester graduate course. The first part deals chiefly with the isotropic and homogeneous average universe; the second part concentrates on the departures from the average universe. Throughout the book the author presents detailed analytic calculations of cosmological phenomena, rather than just report results obtained elsewhere by numerical computation. The book is up to date, and gives detailed accounts of topics such as recombination, microwave background polarization, leptogenesis, gravitational lensing, structure formation, and multifield inflation, that are usually treated superficially if at all in treatises on cosmology. Copious references to current research literature are supplied. Appendices include a brief introduction to general relativity, and a detailed derivation of the Boltzmann equation for photons and neutrinos used in calculations of cosmological evolution. Also provided is an assortment of problems.
