This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For future smart grid infrastructures, utilizing the capabilities of recently introduced wide band gap (WBG) devices can significantly reduce the weight, volume and maturation cost of power electronic applications. However, the presence of these devices in the power network will introduce a new electrical constraint in the form of repetitive fast rising square voltage waveforms characterized by high repetition rate. These waveforms might influence the discharge mechanism of insulation system of power equipment in a way, different than AC. Under such circumstances, it becomes necessary to investigate the reliability of power conversion equipment of the future transmission network such as medium frequency transformer (MFT). For high power application, the insulation system of MFT is expected to incorporate dielectric liquid as its primary insulation medium. However, the discharge mechanism of dielectric liquid under fast repetitive square voltage is not very clear today. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate the partial discharge (PD) mechanism under square voltage waveform to address power electronic applications like MFT. For this, the specifications of a test bench are defined and developed during this thesis to reproduce the electrical stresses in the form of a fast rising unipolar square voltage and switching frequencies above 50 Hz. As the PD measurement under fast rising square voltages is difficult due to electromagnetic interferences caused by high speed switching, the PD detection by optical detection is chosen, which detects the photons emitted during discharge events. To achieve the goal, in the first step the optical detection technique is validated under AC 50 Hz by comparing it to the standard electrical measurement. Then, PD measurements are performed under square voltage waveforms and the results are compared to the AC excitations to understand the impact of non-sinusoidal stress. This work presents the development of a test bench which can generate unipolar square voltage (USV) waveforms with dV/dt between 10-100 kV/μs at 20 kV. It demonstrated optical sensor as a decent partial discharge indicator under high dV/dt. Further, the test bench is assessed to measure partial discharges under varying USV parameters such as changing rise times, repetition rates and duty cycles.

Book Partial Discharge in a High Voltage Experimental Test Assembly

Download or read book Partial Discharge in a High Voltage Experimental Test Assembly written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was initiated when a new type of breakdown occurred in a high voltage experimental test assembly. An anomalous current pulse was observed, which indicated partial discharges, some leading to total breakdowns. High voltage insulator defects are shown along with their effect on the electrostatic fields in the breakdown region. OPERA electromagnetic field modeling software is used to calculate the fields and present a cause for the discharge. Several design modifications are investigated and one of the simplest resulted in a 25% decrease in the field at the discharge surface.

Book excerpt: The flashover mechanism and performance of insulators have always been significant of importance to insulation engineers' attention. A serious flashover accident will damage insulators and influence the reliability of the whole converter station and result in severe outages. It is believed that the flashover and partial discharge phenomena are strongly related to environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, pressure, pollution's, and even space charges. The motivation of this thesis was to study the random discharge phenomenon that was observed in a Manitoba Hydro's HVDC substation to avoid further insulation damages. However, the lack of data prevents engineers from making firm conclusions. As such a data acquisition system was proposed that will collect leakage current data flowing in a reactor's insulation post, to help to build a better understanding of the correlation between PD and environmental influences. The field tests at the HVDC substation studied the behavior of the leakage current from smoothing reactor's ground wire and its associated electric field changes. Through the field tests, we found that the discharge phenomena exists only under certain weather conditions were. One hypothesis for partial discharge occurring on the insulator stacks is the influences of moisture and static charge. Moisture helps the static charge buildup on the insulator will spread along the insulator surface and create a conducting path between the smoothing reactor, flange, and ground. The sharp edge of the flange within this conducting path will generate corona and cause a discharge problem. For the laboratory experiments, humidity and surface charge studies were implemented in air and on FRP insulators under HVDC in order to get a better understanding of environmental influences on partial discharge behaviors. The results demonstrated that for a given electrode configuration, both humidity and surface charge have significant effects on the behavior of partial discharge. We also noticed that the relationship between total charge magnitude Q and equivalent frequency F followed a curve with exponential decay, and under high humidity environment or with surface charge present, the decay speed was faster than normal conditions. And the lab results also proved that time-frequency-charge (TFQ) mapping technique can be used for HVDC PD identifications.
