Book excerpt: This 1857 discussion of economics is, at its heart, both a scientific and a philosophical inquiry. Modern readers may find it striking that unlike current textbooks on the subject, The Character and Logical Method of Political Economy does not deal heavily with mathematical models and formulas. It does not, in fact, deal with them at all. Cairnes believed that while mathematics could have a place in demonstrating economic truths, it could not discover those truths on its own. Economics is founded upon people, their feelings, and their actions. And that, he believed, could not be further explored by math than it was already being explored by philosophy. The lectures here introduce fundamental principles of economics. At the time of its writing, these principles were still hotly debated, so Cairnes both explains and offers a defense for his particular views on how markets work, what drives production, and what drives individuals to make the decisions that affect wealth. Students of economics and anyone with an interest in the subject will find this a greatly informative read. Irish economist JOHN ELLIOT CAIRNES (1823-1875) is the author of numerous books, including Slave Power (1862) and An Examination into the Principles of Currency (1854).

Excerpt: ... lecture viii. of the theory of rent. 1. Of those principles of Political Economy which have of late years been made the subject of controversy amongst economists, one of the most fundamental and important is the theory of rent, generally designated from the name of its ablest expounder, Mr. Eicardo. Mr. Richards of Oxford, some of whose objections to the doctrine of population, as taught by Malthus, I considered in my last lecture, is also an opponent of Ricardo's theory of rent. In the sixth lecture of his work on Population and Capital he remarks upon the close relation which exists between these two doctrines. "The arguments for both," he says, "rest on one and the same hypothesis" "The same assumption--that of the diminishing productiveness of the land as compared with the undiminished power of human fecundity--forms the basis " of both theories. Substantially I take this to be a correct statement of the case, and I am quite prepared to stake the truth of the doctrines in question upon the issue thus set forth. But, before adverting further to Mr. Kickards' objections, it will be desirable first to understand what the doctrine of rent is, as well as its proper limitations. The object of a theory of rent is to explain the fact of rent, and the conditions which determine its rise and fall. In order, therefore, to judge of the theory, we must form a clear and definite idea of the fact of which it is designed to afford the explanation. The fact, then, which the theory of rent is adduced to explain is the existence in certain branches of industry of a permanent surplus value in the product, beyond what is sufficient to replace the capital employed in production, together with the usual profits which happen to prevail in the...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Character and Logical Method of Political Economy In offering to the public a new edition of some lectures delivered in Dublin more than seventeen years ago, a few words of explanation are needed. As regards the substance of the opinions advanced - the view taken of Political Economy, and of its methods of proof and development - the present work does not differ from its predecessor; but extensive changes have been made in the form and treatment. Numerous passages have been recast; increased prominence has been given to aspects of the case only touched on in the former volume; and some entirely new topics have been introduced. To one of these - "Definition" - an additional lecture has been devoted. I would fain hope that in its new shape the work will be found somewhat less unworthy than in its earlier form of such favor as it has met with. No one, however, can be more conscious than the author how very far it still falls short of what such a work ought to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Logic of Political Economy, and Other Papers These papers I am anxious to put into the hands of your house, and, so far as regards the United States, of your house exclusively; not with any view to further emolument, but as an acknowledgment of the services which you have already rendered me; namely, first, in having brought together so widely scattered a collection, - a difficulty which in my own hands by too painful an experience I had found, from nervous depression, to be absolutely insurmountable secondly, in having made me a participator in the pecuniary profits of the American edition, without solicitation or the shadow of any expectation on my part, without any legal claim that I could plead, or equitable warrant in established usage, - solely and' merely upon your own Spontaneous motion. Some of these new papers, I hope, will not be without their value in the eyes of those who have taken an interest in the original series. But at all events, good or bad, they are now tendered to the appro priation of your individual house, the messrs. Ticknor and fields, according to the amplest extent of any power to make such a transfer that I may be found -to possess by law or custom in America. I wish this transfer were likely to be of more value. But the veriest trifle, interpreted by the spirit in which I offer it, may express my sense of the liberality manifested throughout this transaction by your honorable house. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope and Method of Political Economy The nature of the topics discussed in the following pages is sufficiently indicated in the introductory chapter, and a lengthy preface is therefore unnecessary. The abstract discussion of methods may appear to some to have mainly an academic interest, since it does not directly extend our knowledge of economic phenomena. Whilst, however, we ought to be upon our guard against allowing any such discussion to obscure the greater importance of actual economic investigations, the subject is one to which all students of economics must necessarily give some attention in the course of their reading, and its indirect bearing on the solution of practical economic questions is very far indeed from being without importance. Book Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Nassau William Senior and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Economy Secondly, The confounding the science Of Political Economy with the Sciences and Arts, to which it is subservient, has seduced Econo mists sometimes to undertake inquiries too vague to lead to any practical results, and sometimes to pursue the legitimate objects of the science by means unfit for their attainment. To their extended view of the objects Of Political Economy is to be attributed the undue importance which many Economists have ascribed to the col lection of facts, and their neglect of the far more important process Of reasoning accurately from the facts before them. We are con stantly told that it is a science of facts and experiment, a science acide ale fails. The practical applications of it, like the practical applications of every other science, without doubt, require the col lection and examination Of facts to an almost indefinite extent. The facts collected as materials for the amendment of the poor-laws, and the opening of the trade to China, fill more than twice as many volumes as could be occupied by all the treatises that have ever been written on Political Economy 5 but the facts on which the general principles Of the science rest may be stated in a very few sentences, and indeed in a very few words. But that the reasoning from these facts, the drawing from them correct conclusions, is a matter of great difficulty, may be inferred from the imperfect state in which the science is now found after it has been so long and so intensely studied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Economy Under the impression just stated, I joined a public Association existing in London, and with a committee of eight persons commenced an investigation of the state of the science, the result being, that, in the year 1838 I drew up a report, which received the sanction of the committee. The object of this report was confined to shewing the false state in which the science had been placed before the public mind, and was to have been followed by another work, the purport of which was to have been the elucidation of the true nature of the subject.
